In Canada, you always have the right to challenge the equipment used. A coworker was able to challenge that the radar gun that took his speed measurement was not calibrated, and the error band on its measurement was not 100% over the limit.
I can't say I've ever had trouble coming in to the country (UK passport), but I've not travelled internationally for the last few years.
The best immigration passage experience was landing in Manchester from Toronto in 1993, where I got to the parking lot with all my luggage exactly 9 minutes after stepping off the plane. I was first off the plane after the business class folks, walked past them on the way to collect luggage. My two bags were the 1st and 3rd out the chute.
However, it took me almost 30 minutes to find the car.
Those X rays are, of course, also completely useless for us, thus wasted energy.
Sigh.
All electromagnetic radiation of higher energy than visible light is important. The mutations in genetic code that are part of evolution (and hence helped to create us) are caused (mostly) by ionizing radiation. Also, higher energies received by the earth are converted to heat. This is part of our heat gain from the Sun.
But again, I must add that if you look at the efficiency of the sun as a power source (ignoring the argument concerning the energy that strikes the earth, that is a lack of efficiency of our reception, NOT efficiency in production) that you would find that the fraction of biological useful energy (not just human useful, you speciest) is quite good, especially for a natural process that life has adapted to, rather than was created for the sole purpose of supporting life on earth.
Hopelessly inefficient? Measured how? I want my Sun to radiate light and heat. What is wasted? If you believe that the purpose of the Sun is just to illuminate the Earth and that everything else is wasted, you arguement may hold water. I consider that the source of power is fine, it is simply our inability to capture it that is the problem.
Can you imagine if we could effectively capture just one millionth of the total solar output of the Sun?
The current prime minister has locked parliament because he believed he would loose a vote. Not that he lost a vote, but rather he believes he would have lost it. In 2004 he wrote a letter to the GG indicating that should the then Liberal minority government lose the confidence of the House, he could form a coalition government with the NDP with support from the Bloc. Was he a traitor then? No. Are the Liberals traitors now? No. Could any intelligent person call the Bloc traitors? No.
The current government was able to run the previous minority parliament as a majority due to a weak opposition. When presented with an opposition that wouldn't simply fall over to every demand, he picked up his ball and went home. The current prime minister has no idea how to make a minority parliament work: through consensus and non-partisan decision making. He does not share power even within his own party, how can he share power with other parties in the House?
The Canadian people spoke in the last election to NOT give him a majority. Most elected representatives have indicated that they would vote down this government, as they have lost confidence in it. In our parliamentary system, this means that the majority of Canadians have lost confidence in this government. Unless the prime minister can introduce a budget that meets the needs of a sufficient number of oppposition parties, this government will fall.
And we'll see the long knives of the Conservative party come out and take Mr. Harper down. Four kicks at the can, and no majority? If this government falls before spring, Mr. Harper will be Conservative leader no more. Mr. Prentice & friends will see to that.
I'd love to know the work around. Bell's shaping has dropped any p2p to 25 kB/s. From 4:00 p.m. on. I went home at lunch and checked that its cleared during the work day, but squeezed down in the evening. Encryption etc. no help.
But wait, better not expose your solution, they may be listening . ..
There would be more fission if we could add neutrinos to make the decay happen more quickly. However, if the addition of neutrinos slows the decay, we can't do much. There isn't much we can do to reduce the existing level of neutrino interaction to try and speed up the decay rates.

CSO - Combined Sewer Overflow ?
on
The Pragmatic CSO
·
· Score: 2, Funny
A CSO is a combined sewer overflow. Where a sewer system is old, is was designed to carry both stormwater (rain fall off houses and streets) and sanitary sewage (from inside houses) to an outfall (and later to treatment plants). Modern systems have separated sewers, one for stormwater one for sanitary. Only the sanitary goes to the treatment plant. In the city where I live, the outer parts are modern, but the centuries-old infrastructure downtown is still served by combined sewers. Dry days, the sewage is all sanitary, but rainfall increases the flow. The treatment plant or pumping station capacity would be exceeded and the combined sewage discharged directly to the lake. Now, combined sewer overflow tanks have been installed to store the surcharged sewage until the storm is over, and then pump the sewage back into the system to be treated. Until the combined sewers are eventually replaced, this is the best way to help eliminate the release of untreated sewage to the environment.
A pragmatic CSO? Most CSO's don't operate at all in normal conditions, but instantly jump into action the moment the sh!t levels rise beyond the system's ability to deal with it. Is this pragmatic?
Vetinari recognized that crime was inevitable. But if you were going to have crime, make it organized crime. I believe there was a point where Vetinari made the thief's Guild realize that instead of fighting over a slice of the pie to make more money, take a reasonable slice, and then make the pie bigger.
Sound like life imitating art.
Even tougher to explain when you have UK citizenship, but have lived in Canada for more than 40 years. "I am English" "Ah, anglophone Canadian, eh?" "No, I am English, you know, from England?" "Ah. You don't have much of an accent"
"Ever been somewhere for 40 years, arriving before you learned how to talk?"
My favourite joke is to wager someone from Newfoundland or Nova Scotia that I'm from farther east than you are . .."
There are many antibiotics that are not used in agriculture. They have been set aside to fight the superbugs. Unfortunately, we are finding strains of bacteria resistant to even these "reserved" antibiotics. If it turns out that an antibiotic can kill these bugs, then we can use it just on the superbugs.
Yes, in time, a bacteria will adapt to this antibiotic. Potentially this bacteria may find its way into the crocodile ecosystem. But look at it this way, if crocodiles have had this antibody in their bodies for (perhaps) millions of years, is it not possible that a resistant bacteria already exists?
As a note, the reason doctors throw "everything" at a superbug, is because you want to ensure the vast majority of the population is dead, to reduce the possibility of adaptation. In addition, several antibiotics work really well in combination, doing a better job than if utilitized one at a time.
and lastly, just because a bacteria is resistant to antibodies in your system, doesn't make it fatal. Humans lived through smallpox outbreaks. Many don't. Same thing for your phantom crocolisk superbug. Maybe it invades their systems and give them cold sores.
Sorry, folks. Everyone gets upset with Racial profiling, so we'll do it by profession
Let's start with just my profession, civil engineering (from Wikipedia):
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - President of Iran
Yasser Arafat - Former Palestinian President
Osama bin Laden - Civil engineering student
Sukarno - former President of Indonesia
Fritz Todt - Reichsminister for Armaments and Munitions during World War 2
Boris Yeltsin - Ex President of Russia
And this is just civil engineers!
Mahar Arar was a Canadian engineer switching planes in the US who was sent to Syria to be tortured. He was exonerated by the Canadian government who supplied some of the information that was used by the Americans to decide to send him off to Syria.
Earth is our planet, while earth is a substance. One is a proper name, the other is a generic term for soil. Having said that, parent is correct that when we say "found on Earth" is should be capitalized. If the phrase was "found in the earth" either version could be correct, depending upon context.
if you want to understand how to directly convert radiation to electricity... Well, we don't know of anything that already does that, so if such a phenomenon exists (which seems reasonable),
Photovoltaic cells convert radiation in to electricity. DIRECTLY. Of course, its only EM radiation that falls within a specific energy profile, and doesn't include alpha, or beta particles, but at least the certain range of gamma radiation is covered.
In Canada, you always have the right to challenge the equipment used. A coworker was able to challenge that the radar gun that took his speed measurement was not calibrated, and the error band on its measurement was not 100% over the limit.

for "real filming" a tripod is necessary, but you can't beat a camera you can fit in your pocket that doesn't have any moving parts.
