  1. What if on Don't Smudge The Sensor When You Press 'Play' · · Score: 1

I want to lend a movie or CD to a friend? Do I have to be with them to scan my fingerprint every 15 minutes to keep the movie or song going? This seems to be going a bit beyond copy protection and into restricting my use of what belongs to me. Lots of people argue that they purchased the CD or the movie and should be allowed to copy it or back it up. Thats a pretty grey area. But I should be able to give my CD's and movies to whoever I want. If I want to go sell a bunch of old movies on eBay, do I have to file with the MPAA for a fingerprint change? Like the title of a motor vehicle? This is pretty invasive.

  2. Why would they stop working? on Mars Rovers on New Missions · · Score: 5, Interesting
Because the Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers are in such great condition and 'keep going and going'

Could someone please explain to me what exactly would cause a rover that cost $400 million to develop and deploy to fail after several months? I'm not trying to start a ruckus. Perhaps I should've kept up more but I honestly wonder what causes these rovers to cease functioning. It seems like the expectations for home robotics kits greatly exceed those of the Mars rovers. Hopefully someone can explain it.

The idea of one unit seems to suit my fancy more than having dangly periphery or strange IR keyboards that I have to line up in some particular fashion with my handheld.

That is 4.9" x 3.4" x .9". Notice that is [.]9". Not 9 inches. One tenth of an inch less than one inch. The way you write the dimensions make it seem it like is portrait oriented and is nine inches thick.

Perhaps I am some sort of a radical dresser but I have what are known as "cargo" pockets that have more than enough space for an OQO. The OQO is not 2-3 inches thick. It is 0.9 inches thick as stated on the specifications page. 4.9" x 3.4" x .9". Thats thinner than my cell phone. Wow, wait, whats this? People have been carrying objects roughly fitting those dimensions for hundreds of years in their pockets with no problem.

  6. This is NOT a laptop replacement on OQO Examined · · Score: 0, Redundant

Of course here comes the commentary about how you could purchase a dandy laptop for such a price. This is not a laptop. This is not a laptop replacement. It's a beefed up handheld for people that need/want mobile computing power and connectivity in a small package. I wouldn't get rid of my laptop for it, but I just can't fit my laptop in my pocket.

  7. Re:gaming on OQO Examined · · Score: 1

There seem to be plenty of handheld gaming platforms around, however there are very few handheld computers of this design. And I don't know how big your pockets are, but I sure can't fit a 12" Powerbook in mine.

  8. Awesome device on OQO Examined · · Score: 3, Interesting

Finally this this thing is coming out. I sure have been waiting for a while. Its hard to find a device with the right combination of connectivity media, good input interface, powerful enough hardware, but in a very mobile form factor. I have an eNote Lite, AKA the Lindows MobilePC, which is a pretty damn small machine. However I still have to pull it out and boot it up etc. I tried an iPaq but solely Bluetooth didn't cut it, and text input was too hard. The OQO is something I could take with me in my pocket when I don't want to bring a bag, be always ready to go, has a full qwerty keyboard albeit awkward looking, and with hardware that packs a punch. The only other thing I could ask for is telephone, but thats going a little overboard. $1,500 might seem a little steep, but I'd definately shell it out for this seemingly perfect solution to all my problems.

I meant that it is unintrusive as far as how I, the user, interface with it. For example, I do not have some rediculous monocular mounted on a bulky glasses frame and a chording keyboard hanging off of my belt. But I'm sure you knew that. I agree that people talking loudly on their phones in public is annoying. However, you read use the whole quote "the mobile phone seems to be a prime unintrusive platform for 24/7 computing." instead of using 3/4 of it as an opportunity to bitch. When was the last time someone looking at the weather forecast on their phone bothered you?

  14. This is something on Phone As Your Next Computer? · · Score: 2, Insightful

that I have been interested in for some time. I have done a lot of reading on wearable interfaces etc, but the mobile phone seems to be a prime unintrusive platform for 24/7 computing. Some phones are coming along with cameras and the like, but it still seems a long way off. I still use text messaging to communicate via AIM on my phone. I think this has the potential to be come a reality with the miniaturization of hardware. Sony Ericsson seems to be leading the industry in putting more computing power into cell phones with Bluetooth, cameras and the like.

I think it would be a good idea for McDonalds to try something like that. I think its interesting that they're promoting this in such a time. I thought part of their new 'health' campaign was discouraging purchase of their higher calorie meals. I know at least locally too, they downsized the fry containers.

of how easy it is for people to pull poetry out of their asses. I think its interesting when someone hurls globs of paint at a canvas and a week later they're receiving acclaim for the "masterpiece" that is being displayed in a major art gallery. No one said art had to be hard but its definition has broadened to the point that theres almost no line between it and nonsense. Granted, this in particular is more for fun than anything else, but it drives me crazy to see everyone stand back in wonder when some teenager reads the 10*45344^256th iteration of the "I'm drowning in a void of nothingness" poem at a local coffeeshop.

We hit a snag when we realised that the signal dipped out at street level because of the wireless card's antenna. The solution to this was to hold a more powerful antenna up at around 10 feet. Seeing as none of us wanted arm-ache, Matt Leonard built this fantastic backpack!"

They built a repeater backback to avoid an arm ache? Why didn't they use a more high powered card? Or perhaps a directional antenna? Clearly they know where their target AP is. Sometimes I have to rest my laptop in weird positions on my lap to keep a good signal but this seems a little excessive.
