  1. lineage + fdroid on Ask Slashdot: Are There Any Alternatives To Android Or iOS? · · Score: 1

buy a phone that is supported by lineageOS and install it.
do not install the google apps, everything you need is already provided out of the box without any google interference.
install fdroid to get additional, all open source, android apps. it has navigation apps available.

you'll have a phone that is as much open source as possible, the only thing that remains are binairy kernel blobs for various hardware bits of your phone.

  4. great news on AMD Is Open-Sourcing Their Official Vulkan Linux Driver (phoronix.com) · · Score: 1

i actually like AMD, my first PC has an AMD processor and almost all replacements after that also were from AMD.

I've been using nvidia GPU's now on linux for so long, because the driver, even though closed, at least worked best. The last 2 years AMD has made so many improvements and has open source implementations that my next GPU probably will be AMD based.

At first Valve only supported nvidia for steam and steamos, but i think even they are now involved in improving the AMD oss drivers and a lot of games just work.

  5. This confidence rests on the fact that ISPs highly value the open internet

I had no idea that Michael Powell was a comedic writer.

ISP's are companies, and companies value only one thing - profit.
why would an open internet be part of that, when getting rid of net neutrality almost centrainly guarantees more profit (get from money from both customers and web sites).
maybe his post was pure sarcasm?

Get over yourself and stop complaining about things being given away to you for free. It's a shame that people complain about open source software when it's being given to them for free.

isn't that true. what i find even more amazing is that those same people mostly never complain about shortcomings of commercial software.

yeah, and sfm on solaris is just horrible too.

At home, also around that period, or maybe a little later, i used a product from codeweavers to enable windows only browser plugins. It was a sad period on the internet when a lot of sites used plugins that were not available on Linux, worked fine using the codeweavers wine browser implementation (although, a bit high on CPU usage).

Other than that, i was able to run WoW when it came out faster then all my friends who ran it native in windows.
