  1. IE vs M$ Spyware App on Microsoft Anti-Spyware to Be Free of Charge · · Score: 3, Funny

Does this mean they'll cancel each other out, leaving the user with nothing?

  2. No Tuition Worries! on University Of Calgary To Offer Course On Spam · · Score: 5, Funny

Fantastic...a curriculum has finally been designed that will allow students to pay their own way through university, creating and running spam generators!

It's things like this that keep the word 'almost' in my motto 'I'm almost always proud to be Canadian'.

  3. Coding Standards? on Build a Database Driven Site -- Quick · · Score: 2, Insightful

I wish these books would include a section or two on properly coding web apps and sites. Often people who begin coding with weakly typed languages such as PHP (not a knock against it) do not become familiar with proper design and memory management.

  4. Re:Xbox sales boost profits? on Microsoft Posts Record Earnings · · Score: 1

I would think that it may account for some of the rise, alright. More and more people are using XBoxes as a complete media center (no pun intended about MediaCenter, which the Xbox can run). Once modded and hooked to the computer, you've got games, tv programs, movies, music all right there. Once torrents came on the scene, a lot more people started modding those boxes.

  5. A key point on BT's Converged Wi-Fi/Cell Phone · · Score: 5, Insightful

    From TFA
At the most basic level, voice over Wi-Fi treats voice as just another kind of data. It runs voice over IP and uses SIP addresses to route calls across the Internet. This is anathema to the cell networks, who have no intention of allowing voice over IP. For them, data is a means to squeeze more revenue from reluctant customers, not a means to let customers get voice services for less money.

Sadly this has always been one of the major stumbling blocks, and I'm not sure there is a viable solution in sight.

  6. People are people on Geeks in Management? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I as well am a geek who made the leap to management. I've found that, geek or no, people are people. Treat them with respect, listen to their concerns, solicit input, encourage development and accountability, promote teamwork, and all the things we wanted when we were doing the geek work. Geeks often make good managers because of their problem solving skills, but sometimes encounter problems (I did at the beginning) with the arrogance we often feel speaking to non-geeks. Don't make that mistake, you'll be fine.

  7. Good for some, not for others on Firefox Lead Now Working For Google · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm of two minds about this announcement. Ben has put a large amount of hard work to ensure the success of Firefox, given a great deal to the project. He should be free to parlay that work into any opportunity he wants, and certainly deserves recognition for all he's given to the open source community. Having said all that, I can't help but be a little concerned about the continuing Google acquisition/release binge that has been going on for some time. I'm a little paranoid at best, and can't help but feel there may be some privacy issues arise in the future as Google will be tied into everything associated with the web. Maybe I'm worrying for nothing, but maybe I better stock up on tinfoil hats. Best of luck to Ben, and best of luck (we may need it) to those of us that are dedicated Firefox users (privacy being one of the major reasons for adopting itin the first place).

  9. Not totally useless at all on On The Durability Of Usability Guidelines · · Score: 1

I wouldn't think that the guidelines are completely useless in today's world, after all, a good gjuideline is a good guideline, especially if it's broad enough to cover multiple situations. However, I'm quite certain that the list could use some updating :)

I'd have to agree with this. I use an iPaq, and although I'd love to get away from M$ as a client, at the moment I find there is no real viable alternative that has all the equivalent synching functionality. Of course, the PDA is the only reason I use Outlook at all.

  18. It's been coming...sort of... on IBM Puts PC Business Up for Sale · · Score: 1

Ever since IBM rebranded itself (quite successfully, I might add) as a solutions provider, the writing may have been on the wall for the PC division. Instead of worrying about competing with Dell and others for home desktops and laptops, they want to concentrate resources on providing business solutions to large and small companies. Having said all that, and while I do think it's a bold and well thought out buiness decision, I join the others who will lament the loss of the ThinkPad.

  19. Re:FedEx? on Adieu to Ken Jennings · · Score: 1

I think it's more likely that he was convinced or decided to 'gracefully step aside'. Coincidentally, tonight was the last night of November sweeps. Studies have shown that while ratings were high while he was setting records, going for a million and then 2, lately the ratings had been dropping. I'm not saying that he threw the game obviously, and his opponent was certainly worthy, but there were a few misses tonight in categories in which he usually excelled (including Final Jeporady). Who knows, maybe Alex decided he wanted his show back. I have no idea if this might be true, just an idea.

VOIP is being launched for business customers all over the country, and even consumer trials are being held at the moment. I'm not sure that landlines will completely disappear, but the impact to the old style telco is pretty evident. Ah, move with the times, I always say!
