It's not so much a belief that people can only handle one button at a time. It's more of a belief that the operating system and applications should be able to function with only one mouse button. That design 'requirement' really helps to keep interfaces simple and intuitive.
It's actually funny / informative, being a direct quote from the show. Jack says it several times, usually when someone threatens him with courtmarshall.
8:00 - SG-1 starts, sit down and crack a beer 8:30 - Commercials, order delivery for diner (mmmm dumplings), beer #2 9:00 - Atlantis starts, food arrives, beer #3 10:00 - BSG starts, throw leftovers in fridge, beer #4 10:30 - Commercials, change into 'outside' clothes / brush teeth, etc. beer #5 11:00 - Sci-Fi friday over, full stomach, nice buzz, ready to hit the town
All in all it's not a bad routine for a friday, not that much in the party scene at school gets going before 10:30 - 11 anyway.
No one would require that people understand all the ins and outs of a car before using one. But a TINY bit of knowledge would go a long way. Many people don't know that they need to change the oil in their car, many people don't know where to put windshield washer fluid in their car. (A friend of mine is a mechanic and he does see this kind of thing.)
The problem is a lack of basic knowledge, a few simple tidbits would go a long way. For many people the inner workings of their car, or computer, may as well be magic.
I have X11 installed on my macs, can find my way around a shell, and am generaly comfortable using *nix.... but I don't use Open Office because I hate dealing with X11 for it. The look and feel isn't right, so I'll wait for a native version.
I'd sooner "pirate" the album and mail the band $20. Humph.
Hmmm, that would make for a very interesting marketing experiment. If you could convince a well known band (I'm thinking Tool or System of a Down here because of their previous statements about p2p) to release an album for 'free' download via bittorrent and simply collect paypal donations under the assumption that fans are loyal (i know I'm reaching a little bit here)... I wonder what kind of response you'd get.
I'd think that some people would send money to support the band, and others (slashdotters I'm looking at you here) would do it just to make a statement to the recording industry.
A log file of what, your IP address, maybe some packets / pieces of a file that they CLAIM they downloaded from you? My question is, what information do they have that they couldn't get from you pointing a browser to www.mpaa.org?
Somehow the prospect of using an easy to edit text file as evidence in court seems a little..... dubious.
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
Each of those problems could be causing the next. What have you done to try to fix it?
Heres what I'd do: 1 - Boot into single user mode (hold apple-s during boot) and run fsck using the onscreen instructions. Repeat until no problems are listed. 2 - Repair permissions. Boot from an install disk, open Disk Utility, select the boot drive and repair.
Then if there are still issues I'd zap the PRAM (hold apple-shift-P-R during boot until the third 'bong').
Those steps have almost always been enough to fix any problem I've had (three Macs). Excluding a bad stick of RAM and a toasted Hard Drive that made grinding noises.

That has to be the best 'server down' message I've seen in years
There are a lot of other factors to consider there.
What about size / weight?
Battery Life?
Optical Drive?
Ports/slots?
Included software?
It's not a fair comparison without that information.

Does anyone have screenshots of this? /. before

Why is this modded insightful?

Damn, that looks like a Windows program in VPC.
Thanks, but I'll stick to TextEdit, Xcode, vi, and Pages.

I keep a browser window with slashdot open for 8 hours every day, and idly mouse 'up-down' to reload the page every few minutes.
I've wondered about this a bit.

mmmm.... I've been thinking of I2P, can you recommend any How-To setup guides (preferably for OS-X)?
Where do you want to go today?
Back to bed, preferably with an attractive woman.
Looks like someone wants to check Six's oil.
Better watch out though, it'll cause hallucinations.
Ok so who has the .torrent link?
