I like having extra minutes when I need them. T-mobile and Sprint aren't an option because there is no service outside of the main town here in my county (i live in rural southern indiana). Cingular has blanket coverage which is pretty good considering how hilly it is here. Verizon is getting there but there is still a ton of dead spots.
My normal travel route is west across the state and north to chicago. Not a single dead sport with Cingular. That can't be said of the other networks.
I also have an Dell, though it's a e1405/640m. Hibernation and sleep mode work perfectly under vista. It worked perfectly under XP MCE also as far as I could tell.
You do make some good points. I didn't think about other circumstances outside of my area when it comes to home ownership. Most in my county do own their home and what doesn't come from property taxes is supplemented (above and beyond) by the riverboat casino.
I would have preferred to have smaller breaks over the course of the year instead of one giant break in the middle. Maybe that would help?
Why should those who don't use the education system be required to fund it? Above that, why should people be double taxed for same thing? I don't know about where you live, but where I am the schools are no where near underfunded (I'm in Indiana).
As for the cutting summer vacation. Kids tend do better when they have time to play, enjoy themselves and develop creativity on their own. Kids are not wired for a copy of the 40hr work week.
So it's impossible to be a conservative and believe in global warming? I'm a conservative, a scientist (chemist) and I fully believe that global warming is real and that it because of humans.
I guess I should elaborate. I'm fiscally conservative, not this so called conservative BS that is going on today.
As a chemist I have to concede that carbon has some very unique properties, properties that don't exist in other places in the periodic table, but I'm still not convinced that life has to be carbon based. Most of colleges disagree with me, especially biologists, but there is a lot of stuff that we don't know about.
Perhaps your idea of "safe and wonderful" is a bit different. My county has had two murders in the last ten years. I don't consider not having a yard to walk in "wonderful", nor do I consider the sound of traffic 24hrs/day wonderful. what is wonderful is being able to grow your own vegetables in a garden, having two a couple horses and being able to operate my own wood shop (it's a big hobby of mine). There is nothing worse than throwing your money away renting and then have absolutely nothing to leave to your children. I live about 10mi south of the nearest town and never move to the city. The country is quiet, clean and more in tune with nature.
you can have the city and I'll take nature, peace and quiet and a front/back yard.
The fact is that not all of us want to live in an urban environment. I live approximatively 10mi south of the neatest town and have all my life. Less pollution, virtually no crime (2 murders in the last 10 years and that is for the entire county), cost of living is way down there. I have a garden where I can grow my own vegetables so no need to buy them. I even have enough room that I built a wood shop for my favorite hobby and I have a couple horses.
Say what you like but there is absolutely nothing appealing living in a crowded area. If I need anything I can hop in my car and head for Louisville which is about 35mins away. I'm sure not going to sell off my house and property to live in a crappy apartment and pay rent for the rest of my life. Nature is much more appealing.
Flamebait or not it's a good point. If I'm going to pay, why should I have to share my bandwidth? Will I get it cheaper if I use torrent than if I downloaded it directly?
This just seems like a way for the publishers to lower the operating cost at my expense.
The US has tried to get rid of the dollar bill more than once and the populace didn't accept it. The Susan B. Anthony was one attempt but it failed because it was too similar to the quarter. They tried again with the sacagawea but that didn't go too well either. Their latest attempt will be with the founding fathers dollar coins. We will see how that goes.
I personally don't like dollar coins or any other coins simply because of the weight compared to paper.
I'm a conservative (a real fiscal conservative, not the BS that is Bush and Co.) and always liked Newt, but not anymore. Sorry, but this kinda BS is completely out of line and he should be promptly kicked in the crotch.
You were never able to copy songs off the ipod without 3rd party software, so whats the big deal? Now they are letting you copy off some file, files that you have bought from the itunes store.
You can still use 3rd party apps to pull the files off. You always have been able to and you still can. No need to rip twice.
just thought i would chime in on the itunes issue even though it's a tad off topic. they will let you re-download what you have bought from them if you send them a nice email explaining what happened. they will only do this once and will kindly ask you to backup your collection next time. i was skeptical that they would but i had read that people were able. my roommate lost his a few weeks ago and emailed them with the problem. they had no problem giving back everything he had bought.
i wonder if any of the other pay-per-download companies will do this.
I live in a county with a population density of 71/(sq. mile) in southern indiana. my nearest neighbor is about 1/2mi away and the nearest stoplight is 12mi away.
this is common in the US, so there is no surprise that broadband penetration is like it is. it cost an absolute fortune to run the infrastructure here. the cable tv companies decided not to install in the area because everyone already has satellite. this is the most hilly part of indiana so wireless isn't a good option. cell phone reception is great, if you're with cingular so maybe you could get broadband through them, i dunno. satellite internet isn't worth the price.
who still does this? I just bought the same laptop as in the article (640m) and didn't have anything like that, nor did my roommate who just bought a compaq laptop. On both the EULA roughly appeared when first booting.
your idea of rock solid and their idea is little different. they have probably one of the most bug-free pieces of software in existence. it's tailored to do what it needs to do, nothing more, nothing less and it does it perfectly.

I can wake from sleep in a second or two. Waking from hibernation takes longer.
I have an g4 ibook also, it takes about the same amount of time.
I also have an Dell, though it's a e1405/640m. Hibernation and sleep mode work perfectly under vista. It worked perfectly under XP MCE also as far as I could tell.
Of course it's all up to Dubya who gets the source code. *rolls eyes*
The president doesn't directly make every decision the goverment makes.

Yea I realized I might have jumped the gun after I posted that. I'm going to hold out and see.

We're lucky he is no longer in office.
we have a rotary phone in the basement that is still used. it's from the 60's i think.
it's not a myth, it's a joke and a damn funny one. most everyone knows it's not true.
bitlocker is optional.

seriously, whats the options?
sounds interesting. if he a site or anything send a link!

you never want one party controlling congress and the office of the president. the less that gets passed, the better!
We have the fill in the arrow paper ballots which are read by machines. Don't like the results? Recount by hand.
Fine, this is Slashdot, but you don't need touchscreen and you shouldn't have it it. Stick to paper!
Harrison Country, Indiana.
