    I think these are a great idea and I would not be surprised if Apple start to support them in the future. A phone could be built with no open connections at all. Just wireless data and inductive charging. But over longer distances the laws of physics catch up with up. Obviously the shorter the wavelength the less doffraction you get over a given distance so if you direct power with a laser and convert it into electricity with a photovoltaic cell then you could easily get more efficiency over a few metres than with induction. Maybe in the future it will be considered normal to transmit power that way.

    Yeah I used EFL components on the openmoko. It was loaded with ifs and buts. Only some components would nest inside other components for example. In swing you can put anything you want inside a ScrollPane. In EFL, only what the developers needed when they wrote it.

    a low level virtual machine instruction language which is generated at runtime and compiled into optimal machine code for the hardware it's running on

    I have worked on Java for many years without IDEs. I was recently put on this project where the software development environment was built around eclipse and I am the first to admit that eclipse was being used incorrectly. But its my only experience of using eclipse so I am reporting it as I see it.

    I wrote a simple file system indexer at my last job. Enter part of a class name and it loads the source file in an editor. Eclipse failed because projects have to be small. This application had > 200 projects and any non-trivial tasks would have required working with 100 projects at a time.

    Imran Khan is known outside the US as an international cricket legend. This is is second career on the world stage. He would not have been treated like this in most other countries.

    At the Melbourne show with my son when he was about seven we were both in a really thick crowd of people. I turned around for a moment and he was gone. I couldn't find him anywhere and he didn't know where I was either. Eventually he retraced his steps and found me where we had last seen each other but I had a very frantic five minutes or so. My son has done this a few times. He seems to enjoy hiding and watching me search for him. Great fun for him.

    The 19th century design was never built and probably wouldn't have worked. Machines which have been built from Babbage's designs have a tendency to jam.

    Crims hung out on Flinders street outside the WTC police offices and wrote down the rego plates of cars going in and out. It created a bit of a stir but they are entitled to hang out in public places and write things down.
