  1. College freshmen on VoIP And Cell Phones Eroding Traditional Telecoms · · Score: 1, Informative

I'm about to move into college, and I for one don't plan on using the landline telephone. I know my cellphone gets good coverage all over the campus. Perhaps many other people are doing the same? As far as I know, the pricing is comparable, but the cell phone is much more portable. Maybe people moving into college are starting to realize this, and the same with first time house (and apartment) buyers.

well, it's certainly cheaper to strike an alliance then build your own set of network hubs, and a fleet of trucks with which to pick up the items to be repaired.

Well, I was thinking about buying a game console, and it's mostly about the number of decent games out there.. they don't have to be new.

so for me, if I get a ps2, backwards compatibility will be nice.

however, for microsoft, they obviously want everyone to buy all new games, because the more sales the better.

    we need cold fusion!

really though, it seems to me that all technologies that are not the 'holy grail' are not a permanent solution to the problems. as processors get faster, they'll use more energy and create more heat. same with everything else in the laptop...

I guess what they say is right though,
there's good money to be made in prolonging the problem.

  7. Howto from SANS Institute Storm Center on How To Avoid Viruses At Windows Install Time? · · Score: 2, Informative

    step 1:
do not connect the pc to any phone or network and no wireless connections either.

    step 2: install winxp

    step 3: admin password
    --at least 8 chars long
    --letters numbers AND other charactors
    --not a dictionary word
    --not easily guessed

    step 3: networking setup
    choose custom
    unselect client for msft networks
    unselect file and printer sharing
(you can enable after it's all patched up)

on the 'will this computer coneect to the internet directly...' dialog, select the proper settings as they will be, but it still should not be plugged into the network

don't activate, remind every few days

    step 4: user accounts
setup whatever user accounts you need, same rules apply to passwords. also, if your account has no password, it will not be accessable through the network.

    step 5: verify network settings
in the network connections dialog, for each connection,
-- make sure client for msft networks and file & printer sharing are STILL off
-- turn on the windows based firewall

    reboot now

step 6: windows update pass 1
-- you can now get online, because you should be safe enough with the firewalling set up

step 7: run windowsupdate/reboot as needed until the system is FULLY patched.

step 8: install other software, such as virus checking.

(it's still a bad idea to disable the firewall, but it's much safer now than before)

  8. IPO Publicity Stunt? on A New Google News Data Visualization, with Source · · Score: 2, Insightful

Anyone else think that all of the new google inventions being released are not just for the product itself, but for the IPO? the google gmail invite machine is getting over 1000 hits per second, and is using an amazing amount of bandwidth. Although it may be a publicity stunt, I am pretty surpried with all of the nice innovations google is coming up with, to expand it's market from just search engines.
