Captain N was a Saturday-morning cartoon, and the SMB/Zelda show was an after-school show.

Does anyone else remember the Mother Brain character on Captain N sounding like the Mammy character on the old Tom & Jerry cartoons? Not trying to be racist/insensitive/whatever, but wasn't she all "I don't know nothin' about birthin' no babbies!" in style of speech? Man, haven't thought about that show since 3rd grade or so...

Also, how about that Super Mario Brothers rap? Man, I remember singing/rapping that in unison with all the other kids on the schoolbus....good lord.

That's true, but a reasonably well-designed crypto system (well-tested by smart math guys) isn't easily "puzzled-out", and that's what you'd need to do.

What I mean is, supplying a static message enrypted with a ton of different keys will help you break the entire encryption system, but there's no "easier" way to decode one specific message other than figuring out the whole system. And what are the chances of someone "solving" AES? Once someone figures out P=NP I guess...

Don't forget, that would mean no Gmail, no Google News, no Froogle. I think no Gmail would be a big deal, I know a TON of non-technical people that use gmail as their main email provider.

Now they can send eachother signed and encrypted emails, all WITHOUT any kind of Microsoft CA or server. It's important in our environment that the private certs NOT be stored where the email/Exchange admins have access to them, so while it takes a little manual labor, it's FREE and works very very well.

Who cares about Apple DRM when all your songs are encoded in 192kbps plain-old mp3? I'm DRM-free baby! If you do download from iTMS, just get PlayFair and decode those songs, no biggie (assuming it still works, haven't checked in a while).

And I'm glad Apple is locking everyone out of iTunes and iPod. Let MS twist in the wind. Better yet, offer licensing to everyone BUT Microsoft, that would be even better.

GBA looks like it's winning so far with Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars 2, Fire Emblem, and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

But, the DS also has Castlevania (forget the name) and Advance Wars 2, but I don't see any Final Fantasy on there.

So, keeping in the realm of good travel games (as thisis mainly for this trip I'm going on), what's better, a GBA or a DS?

  21. I'm SO tired of explaining this... on Windows Gets Independent Security Certification · · Score: 1

You're exactly right. Here's how it works:

You have this thing called a Protection Profile (PP). It defines the kind of environment the computer/OS will be operating in: Is it networked? What kind of hardware does it have? Software? If it is networked, is the network friendly or hostile? etc.

So, what MS does is have a their OS graded on a really pussy PP (not networked, in a friendly environment, locked in a vault so there's no physical access, etc) and say "Our product is secure (what "secure" means is also outlined in the PP) in this environment!".

The EAL levels only indicate how THOROUGHLY this statement has been validated!

So, if a bunch of security auditors are really, really, really sure that Windows is "secure" (however the PP defines that), in the weak, totally-non-real-world environment outlined in the PP, then it get's a high EAL number. THAT'S IT!

After all, my unpatched Win 98 box is totally secure when OFF AND LOCKED IN A CLOSET!. EAL 5 here I come!

Otherwise TV will turn (more so) into the horrible, shitty swamp of crap that is 95% of modern American cinema...

  25. Popular channels subsidize less popular ones on FCC Report Supports a la Carte TV Pricing · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't like this idea. If we give people the power to buy channels on an a la carte basis, that means the ones that don't get purchased as frequently will probably go out of business (as TFA says).

If I watched MTV, CNN, and the Country Music Network, I wouldn't care. But since I watch the History Channel, the Science Channel, Discovery, etc, I do care. These channels will probably fall by the wayside as their revenue is reduced by a huge margin. =(
