my cousin will sit all day adding and removing components from the dell website. There are lots of hidden discounts to be gotten if you are persistant. You can make a PC for 800$ or make one with more ram and a bigger hard driver for $600. One time he even got 6 free palm zires and an axion.
Bah, I don't believe that. Grandmas gonna be pissed when she can't hook up her ipod to her brand new alienware laptop with dos & geoworks installed on it. It's easy to say that you didn't want it, but if you look back at how much we have evolved in the past 15 years, you'd never want to go back.
Computers still have a long way to go before they can approach the ease of use and stability we demand of every other consumer appliance in our lives.
It's easy to demand more from a product that has a very clearly defined role. Computers on the otherhand is more a jack of all trades role. It's like creating an OS that is invulerable to internet worms. If you created something like this, it's going to be so restricted in certain areas that it would unusable to others. Maybe linux has a chance in this respect since there are so many types of distributions that favor one type of user over another.
I think the user experience is faster; it's at least richer. You can go ahead and throw windows 3.1 or dos 5 on your machine and watch it scream. Obviously that's now what people want. As long as people demand innovation and new features, they will continue to require more and more power.
If you goto msn.com you are immediately bombarded with a busy interface. It they try everything they can to distract you into pushing on their links rather than you performing your own search. Yahoo and others are guilty of the same thing. These sites are portals first, search engines second. I like googles interface because it is plain and clean. Ads arn't displayed till after the search. The ads that are displayed seperated out into a useful sidebar. Which is nice because I like to compare the paid advertisers to the top search results. IMHO I've found search engines to be less and less useful over the years. The first few pages are always highly comercial and everything after that seems wicked old. The most of the good sites are all tucked away linked in forums.
It's funny you say that because, I remember the stereotype of "Band Geek". Which has absolutely nothing to do with computers and everything to do with music. I see a geek as someone who is almost fanatic in nature. A geek possesses much greator understanding of perticular fields then the norm and they are enthusiastic, almost to the point euphoria. You could be a programming genious who hates computers but does it for a living; you wouldn't be a geek. You could have no computer skills whatsoever but be able to talk for hours about any classical composer; that's a geek. Geeks are passionate and a bit over the top. Makes no difference what the interest is.
BTW, Music and Art can be very technical. Perhaps more than any other field. Talk to a passionate painter about the dynamics of lighting. Those folks and be much geekier than even your biggest startrek nerds.
Not a geek? You my friend are in denial. You read slashdot and claim to have an understanding of ad,dns, dhcp, nfs, nis, and kerberos. You attempt to conceal your geeky-ness under the banner of artist.
I'm sorry I have to break this to you, but you are a geek. I don't care how cool your friends are.
Using current technology, blasting electricity into space would be highly inefficient.
The product mentioned in the article doesn't do this. You basically take your cellphone and put it on a pad. It then charges the battery by way of induction. The pad is just alternating magnetic current, which generates electricity.
The widespread use of this, could eventually lead to better technologies, this technology in and of itself isn't really but the target market and concept behind this product is rather new and novel.
This shouldn't really be labeled as a "wireless" charging solution but rather a "generic" charing solution. As the design is ment to allow you to charge any device that supports this process by placing it on the pad. A single solution for your phone,mp3 player, etc etc. When you get home from work, just empty your pockets on the counter (charging pad) like normal and walla, they are charged when you are ready to leave the house.
Isn't this a similar concept to what bill cosby had in his morning tv show picture page. I remember thinking how cool that wierd pen was that made sound ant talked. As a child I really wanted one. Then I remember seeing one at toys are us or something similar. It made crappy sound as your drew with it and was really cheap. Was a big let down... But remembering back to how much I really wanted one, I could see this being a really popular item given proper marketing.
Lack of Female Developers/designers?

Getting the Girl

The video game development landscape is populated by mostly men. Until more females become interested in creating the content you won't see females being portrayed the way "females" want. On another note, there isn't any difference between this and other media outlets. TV/movies and music videos work the same way. Even the female leads in these projects know how to sell a product. I'm going to even throw in a reference to porn here. I was watching a thing on TV where they talked how they used to use average men in videos because they felt they would identify. But then they realised that "sexy" men sold more. People want to be transported into the fantasy. Is the game industry immature? Or is it just being realistic?
I certainly welcome our new cloned human overlords..
as long as they all look like the olsen twins.
The titanic is unsinkable
don't charge anything. Then downgrade..er I mean upgrade their machine.... and sell the extra parts on ebay.
profit!

You can't eat your cake and have it too.
is this one of those, "your hole is bigger than mine" arguments?

I like google because I don't like to be bombarded with crap until after I push the search button.
now that the unsuspecting people think that hubble is just floating garbage, it's true purpose can be utilized; a High powered Super Laser.
Its a TRAP!
binky: What are we going to do today?
brain: According to this slashdot article our hard work of mind numbing subliminal propaganda has paid off.
binky: So,are we going to take over the world now?
brain: Not today. We will wait. The next generation of preschoolers will wave all their rights. Muahaha

They forgot to mention that if you hold it next to your head you may grow a tumor.
Not another one of these cry baby medical conditions. Oh well, maybe it's true.... As long as I can still use my middle finger, I'm ok.

And for the record, Geek != Loser.
comeon, those are just vaporware.. I'm holding out for the phantom.
Did they sue the people actually providing/hosting the illegal mp3s or did they just go after this guy because it was an easier target?
never has this translation error turned joke applied more.
Peopleware : Productive Projects and Teams, 2nd Ed. [amazon.com] by Lister and DeMarco -- probably THE book you want to get
That reminds me of another management story.
