  1. does it matter? on How Long Do You Want Digital Media To Last? · · Score: 5, Insightful

In 25 - 30 years, the data on that disk probably won't be readable by the current software available. Just like that 8-track that you will never find a car to use in. To keep your data current you'd have to convert and rearchieve every so many years.

  2. Re:it's unfortunate on Indie Artists Support Peer To Peer · · Score: 1

    That's the artist's job, not the network's

without P2P I'd have never heard of them

If it's the artists job to advertise, then what does that have to do with finding them on P2P? Using P2P usually starts by knowing what you are searching for. If you search for "music" or "rock", you will get too many results to find anything worth your while. Most peer to peer networks don't have a great category system. I'm thinking something more along the lines of what cnet does with shareware

  3. it's unfortunate on Indie Artists Support Peer To Peer · · Score: 1

I still think it is debatable whether people actually download indy music off of your typical peer to peer network. People go with what they know and have heard of; that's major label music. If peer to peer music sharing networks did a proactive job of advertising and rating/ranking indy musicians, it might spawn into it's own industry....... if that happens..... it'll somehow become controlled by those who are out for a profit.. and someday people will be having a discussion over some new technology that is destroying it.

  5. Re:Remember The Hypocrisy on PSP And DS Duke It Out · · Score: 5, Interesting

I think there are enough people on slashdot that we have people on both sides of the fense. Those of us who like Nintendo and/or Sony are chiming in. Those of us who don't will complain when the next article about patents comes out. (although I must admit, I am also a staunch hater of software patents as well)

Now I will go ahead and say that I think the DS will be the successful handheld. Many will rushout and buy the PSP. But in the end it will come out to cost. The cheaper cost will create a bigger demand for the DS. This will cause more developer support and better games for Nintendo. Resulting in even more people buying the DS.I'll throw $120 down to get a DS and even if I don't use it a whole lot, it won't be a great loss. The PSP just doesn't seem cost effective to me considering the amount of use I'd get out of it. For a parent buying a handheld for their child, this is also a no brainer. Nintendo knows the handheld market, I don't think sony will make it this time and wind up like Nokia and the ngage. I could be wrong though, we'll just have to see.

Starship Troopers is one of my favorite books. Unfortunately the movie doesn't remotely capture the essence of the book. Not to say it is a horrible movie on it's own. It's the case of book != movie. Basically, you'd have to watch it and pretend the title is "Troopers from a Starship".. and maybe, just maybe when you are watching it there will be a few scenes that remind you of a good book you once read.

  12. drivers shmivers on Dvorak on How Microsoft Can Kill Linux · · Score: 1

Drivers are so 90's. Every linux install I've done recently hasn't had any driver support problem. And if it did, there was a quick solution that someone in the community had solved. In my opinion, the biggest thing windows has is the games. The pc gaming market is huge. Whether or not I can get my graphics card working on linux makes no difference if there arn't many good games to play. Gaming is the only reason I keep my windows machine. If microsoft wants to keep a hold, they need to make sure the directX library continues to entice developers. When we see a linux gaming section at the local EB, we know that windows has started falling down the slippery slope.
