If it's not eventual migration to a new standard (e.g. high-definition was not even thought of when the original cable lines were run), increased numbers of communications-capable devices will start chewing through all the "extra" bandwidth no one needs (xbox, video phone, transmat pad, food replicators, etc.).

Power cords will remain, but you can probably see alternatives to some of the other devices:

1 RF antenna for my FM tuner
Why not use a USB device that would work wirelessly and allow you to place in a better position to actually place an antenna? Which leads us to...

1 Coax for my cable TV
I'm assuming this is cable to the TV itself (tho I'm unsure to what percentage of the average business desktop this would be found), but this could be a USB tuner/capture device as well (better if it includes FM!), but have this behind a filing cabinet near the coax jack on the wall, on a bookshelf, etc. etc.

1 cord to connect speakers to PC
Creative, for example, has a USB-based Audigy sound card that could work wireless in this scenario.

As far as video connections go, I wouldn't think this solution would really have the bandwidth you crave, but there are some (lame) USB video devices available, but mostly for a laptop docking solution.

But for actual cables versus wireless, if you are using a desk-bound computer, why would any of this really manner? Cabled once, whether to a computer, or tied to a wireless-wifi hub (which I see as the real product of the first generation of these devices), you don't really move anything, however this would be a god-send to those of us that use our laptops both as a desk machine and take with us on the go. Since my laptop doesn't have a "real" docking solution available, I'm thinking that a short-range wireless solution would be great, as I could hook up the power and everything else would magically start working (sound, mouse, keyboard, external tuner/vidcap device, gamepad, computer-actuated adult toys [I can dream], etc)...

However, until some real products appear, I'm not going to hold my breath...

I did find it interesting that Alaska Airlines still has self-service kiosks at some airports (San Diego, for instance) in the gate area. When asked about that, they told me it would be too expensive to remove them in hopes they can use them again sometime, as well as the occasional traveler connecting through a non-partner airline could use it without going through security.

(I'm assuming you're in the USA). You should go back and examine your case law. Of course everyone has a "right" to use a cell phone, unless the government restricts this right.

If someone causes a disturbance with a movie theater, that person is clearly in the wrong. Why should my rights be restricted because I'm less likely to make a scene?

If you ran a movie theather and this technology were available and you used it, you would not only be infringing on my rights (causing a disturbance in the RF spectrum), but running afoul of the FCC and in general pissing off the wireless operators because of a potential loss in revenue.

Many people are "on call" and are not allowed to drop out for two hours without being responsive. Let's see how happy you are after your house burns down because you were doing the happy dance while jamming the phones/pages of the volunteer firefighters who decided to go out and see a movie in your establishment.

Cell phones are but one form of disturbance. There are many others that can be just as annoying, but aren't singled out because they do not have an electronic beep associated with them. When's the last time you've seen an usher ask someone to be quiet, cell phone or not? From my experience it just doesn't happen anymore, and this is one of the true reasons there's so much cacaphony. Why pay for ushers to patrol the theaters when they could be selling $10 popcorn in the lobby instead?

  13. Re:Can I get one on FCC Sued to Allow Cell Phone Jammers · · Score: 1

Do you own such a movie theater? Do you know of the existence of a single one? Are you just trolling?

Theater owners love to do business with people that give them money. These people more often than not in recent years have a cell phone on their person. In order to entice the business owner to 1) ban cell phones or 2) enforce quiet within the theater (both effective solutions), explain how they would make money from this.

If it results in customers being ejected, that will mean less revenue (from refund, loss of repeat business, whatever).

Not doing either results in a few bitchy customers that still come in = the same money.

If there's no increased revenue, there's no reason for them to lift a finger. Again, why would a real theater owner listen to either one of you?

So-called diagnostic clients are available now for most platforms that do this today (Symbian, PalmOS, WM5, etc) and, for GSM at least, on the SIM card itself if the phone is not capable (USIM, SIM Java Applet, SIM WIBlet, etc).

These are currently proprietary solutions which only the wireless operator can access through a number of different vendors, but there are now OMA DM draft standards that work in both CDMA and GSM that will be hitting the market within months - leaving a single method for "another" agency other than the wireless operator to be able to hit any new phone with the same software themselves rather than relying on the operator to provide it. This is all IP based (WAP or data connection) after a single SM notication is sent (SMS) - you won't "see" any activity when this is turned on if the DM client honors the UI flag that comes in the first notification, then afterwards you might notice data in/out once in a long while but no indication of what it is. Many phones already have other services (e.g. Blackberry BES connection) so 99.99% of the users will never notice.

Put that in your foil "hat" and smoke it :) And check out the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) web site if you want to dig through the standards drafts and RFCs.
