It really disturbs me that if we capture Bin Laden anytime in the next few months that there will actaully be people in the US who will be UPSET about it!!
Are we so divided that events that happen that advance the common good cannot be recoginzed by the everyone because of politics?
You could always dd the boot sector off to a floppy before you install, and if things go wrong you can use a linux rescue disk to boot and then dd the old boot sector back onto the machine. You would lose the mandrake install this way if things went bad, but you'd still be able to boot into XP.
Note: googling for the exact instructions to do this is left to the reader.
I think there really need to be another open source licence at this point.
I would love to see a GPL for everyone but SCO, or even a GPL that states that if you file a patent/copyright suit against GPL software that you lose your rights to use/modify it.
I know this would be a slippery slope and not in the true spirit of the GPL, but it really pisses me off to see SCO doing what they're doing to Linux and then tout there new OS which includes a whole bunch of Open Source software!!
I think the answer is that the medical device vendors should see this as a wake up call telling them that they need to have access to all the code that runs their devices, be it open source or homegrown.
Reading the story you get the sense that everyone talked to in the whole story is ready to point the blame at the device vendor. Not once does anyone quoted in the article take Microsoft to task for the state of their software.
And I love hearing all the hypocrite nazis spout off about the liberals who are just exercising their right to free speech. What should be done about it, should the right to free speech only be allowed for stuff you want to hear?
Nothing should be done about it. Liberals have a right to spout off and conservatives have that right too spout off back at them.
Thank God there's freedom of the press then. You may not like Fox news, but that doesn't mean I can't watch it.
I love hearing all the liberals spout off about how bad Fox news is. What should be done about it, should Fox News be banned because some people think they are biased? Who chooses what news media outlets can exist and what can't? That job would have to be done by someone in the government wouldn't it?
Give me a large number of biased news organizations (current situation, for both sides) any day over the government having any say whatsoever over what news organizations can say.
Censorship is the government telling people what they can and can't say. What Fox News runs for stories is their decision, and their freedom to decide.
Now back on topic. In my opinion, this isn't censorship, it is refusal to accept an inadiquate payment for the settlement. Everyone knows that the RIAA is dumping CDs in these settlements. Now someone is doing something about it.
IBM is betting the farm on Linux. The big statement here is the "strongly advocated others to promise the same" part.
I see that as a veiled threat of retailation if someone goes after Linux with patents. IBM stands to lose large amounts of money if they are unable to sell their clients Linux solutions.
Also, I strongly believe that IBM is Linux's only home of surviving the coming patent war. IBM will have to step up to the plate to defend Linux if Microsoft goes on the patent attack. I aslo belive this is why Microsoft hasen't attacked yet.
Another thing to look for is IBM's new processor. With this new core architecture being touted as revolutionary, they could patent the algorithms for basic processing of instructions on this thing and require every OS that uses it to pay roalties. That is a great deal of potential leverage for the future (along with being a good example of why software patents should be illegal).
How will the Republicans be able to disinfranchise voters now..?
Yean, like only Republicans disenfrancise voters.... oh, wait, you're right, Democrats have only enfranchised dead voters before.
That being said. I distrust diebold machines not because I believe diebold is evil, but because they appear to have been totally incompetent in creating an adaquately working system for electronic voting. Give me paper and pencil anyday.
Also, the safer civil disobedience route would be to generate a large amount of static electricity and just touch the voting machine. That way you can tell them the stupid machine just broke.
This is an obsolete concept coming from an earlier time when citizens were few, and could not inflict catastrophic damage unto others while doing their normal routine.
Yeah, because if some guy in the 1800's ran you over with a horse, that wasn't a big deal at all.
There has always been the capability for one citizen to cause harm for another.
What I fear from black boxes is: how long until they get wireless communication? Then how long will it be before they call in to report every incidence of speeding to the police? There are many in government that want to stop all illegal activity (p2p for example) from even occuring. Stopping all speeding would sound pretty good to them. And privacy, pshaw, we don't need any of that.
It is so tiring reading about how these people want to legislate the hell out of everything.
And Hatch is supposed to be a Conservative!! I thought the conservatives were against big government and regulations. Hell, he's practically regulating every device consumer electronics companies make with this bill.
The Republicans better watch them selves, there are a large number of libertarians that vote repbulican because of their supposed small government message. Personally, I don't think this country has much hope for the future unless a third party (or hell even a fourth would be good) moves away from the two major parties.
The reality of the situation is that you need to use all your funding / even run over a little bit to justify "getting more" in the next round of appropriations.
And that is why there will never be a balanced budget until govenment departments are rewarded for saving money. It was actually proposed somewhere that promising to give just a bit of the saved money as a bonus to employees in a federal department that went under budget could help quickly eliminate deficits.
Sooner or later the Democrats will be in office and will get the budget back to a place where we can manage it again.
You don't actually believe that do you? The only reason there was a budget surplus in the late 90's is that the Tech. Boom was unforseen by the politicians and a lot of taxes were pulled in because of it. Congress quickly realized their mistake of not spending fast enough to maintain the budget deficit.
Until Congress realizes that expendatures and income need to be tied together (ie. projects get X % of the budget not X billion dollars), there is no way in hell the budget will be balanced. As I said before the budget surplus was (from their point of view) a miscalculation by congress and was remedied.
No political party currently in operation in the can or will balance the budget over a long term.
The thing is when they start coming after people, it won't be two hundered thousand nerds, it will be tens of millions of file sharers.
There are orders of magnitude more file sharers then there are drug users violating the drug laws. Just put it this way about 50 million people elected the president in the last election. It has been estimated that that many people have used p2p for file sharing. The politicians schilling for the RIAA are playing with fire. A voter backlash on this issue could be enourmous.
I know that even though I am a conservative, I have very strong libertarian leanings. There is no way in hell that Hatch would ever get my vote. The Republicans have to be very careful with this, there are a lot of closet libertarians in their midst who do not like this kind of legislation.
And since when does a private company get to use the government's resources for its own civil suits? No citizen would be allowed to do that. It is so costitutionally wrong it makes me sick to think that some scumbag senator actually though it up. Do those idiots even read the constitution?
Are you insinuating that the democrats actaully built worthwhile public education??
If you are really concerned about public education get involved at the LOCAL LEVEL. No amount of federal money (not even an infinite amount) can solve the problems of public education. The only solutions worth a damn that will bring any positive impact are all local inititives, like getting parents involved, knowing and talking to your kids teachers, knowing the material they are teaching with, helping your kids learn, and supporting you local school (through taxes, donations, or both). Federal money always has too many strings attached or a hidden agenda, or both.

It always used to be "DOS isn't done 'til Lotus won't run". Maybe this is still the case, since IBM is using Lotus for their email...
Maybe....

No one ever said free speech wasn't messy.

Yes, but if "their consumers" don't want to be exposed to "stuff" on p2p networks, then why are they using them?
This is just another misdirection by the entertainment industry because they know whats good for us and thats paying them money.

When those 300K/year researchers replace cmd with ksh (hell even bash would be ok), then I'll be impressed.
WTF does how you vote have to do with the "Death of Science"?
There are a large number of Republicans out there who are involved in science and engineering.
I do agree with you, however, that made up statistics do contribute to the "Death of Science".
But, of course, you did critize his use of a generality with one of your own.
The reality of the situation is that you need to use all your funding / even run over a little bit to justify "getting more" in the next round of appropriations.

But then you wouldn't have the distinctive white cord.... ;-)
30 years ago, anyone who suggested that the U.S. would pass a law like the USAPATRIOT act would have been laughed out of the room.
60 years ago we put Japanese Americans in prison camps. This make the Patriot Act look pretty lame by comparison.
You forgot your tags ;-)
The X-prize is not about reaching orbit, and SpaceShipOne was built specifically to win the X-prize.

They're probably thinking.
"It will be really inconvienent if we had to manufacture a lot of these, lets put in limiting features so that no one actually wants one of these."
Even with adblock the advertisement frame shows up and screws up the columns.
But would you really want to create value for society which only consumes and gives you nothing in return?
Some people have already done something like that. They call their contribution Open Source Software.
