    Each webserver will return a redirect to a google cache lookup for itself if the load sever gets too high.

    1: Stupid idea
    2: Patent
    3: Wait 'til someone nudges at your generously worded patent
    4: happily license this unrelated technology to keep thier VC peeps in the green.

    A link points to document X.

    If document X moves, and the link is invalid, a search for the link might actually find document X, and therefore, you have your benefit, and you would have saved a 404.

    However - if a document becomes deprecated and deleted, then how can you assume the link is valid?

    Or indeed, if the document has no relevant substitute.

    A genealogy providing a link to another Willian Wallace wouldn't be good news if the original page went missing.

    A better system is automated 404 alerting to the webservers administrator.

    A bad link gets hit, bam, what document, from where. You can work things out intelligently, not automatically.

    I think this is silly, perhaps grasping at straws, I see no reason why we would replace all our links to google 'I feel lucky' searches, so why do something like this?

    This is the essence of what they have, and all they have done is coulded the search IP field (which is important) with 2 more patents, again increasing costs and endangering open source innovation, the true innovative playing field.

    Of course, I could be wrong.

    There are still copyrights, but more so they want to pull people into thier sprawl of a site.

    I love the radio shows. I have them as MP3 (must OGG 'em)

    Any updates on the film? It is a long way off, I don't wanna rush them, but they can keep us in suspense, and trickle delicious sweet information to us slowly - and an OGG of marvin saying 'diodes on my left side'.

    In unrelated 42 news, Seinfeld 1-3 series set was 42 on the amazon sales rank, and I bought it today. Nov i'll be out.

    Jonathan Schwartz gives me some heebie jeebies, I am not sure what to think of him.

    I say ZDNet has no credibility running this story. I think each new source should be ranked, as what is news, what is propoganda, what is advertising?

    In laymans terms, do you really believe all those reviews in the official N64 / PS2 magazine?

    Sun are going from a, lets make money from all this good hardware, to making money from thier top end hardware, and trying to float to the top (and play catch up real bad) on the intel chain.

    If I was running sun I would offer what is best for the market, and diversify offerings, but with a core thrust.

    Offer AMD64 + JDS / Yoper (burning yoper on other machine now... I think it is SuSE + better KDE + faster load times)

    With all thier knowledge, sun could have *the* killer distro - I mean *the* killer distro. I am looking forward ot the new solaris. I am not looking forward to Microsofts rip off of GNU software (re: longhorn).

    Lets all play nice, you cannot beat sun hardware when you need 90gb of ram, 24 processors, and these need to run at 99% load at 75% of the time.

    I think the EC are quite clever when they stock up on Sun equiptment, but that market is static, as people (google et al) are creating a plug and play grid architecture that makes the cheapest components have realiability and redundancy that reduces TCO and maximises performance AND is future proofed in terms of investment (you never throw the whole rig away)

    I love variety, if there was one linux distro, or one window manager, or one desktop system (I would like a new breed of application here) then it would suck.

    Gripe regarding KDE. Klipper, good, KToolbar, good, KWM, fine.... dump the rest of the stuff! :-)

    Seriously. GNOME, it knows what it is. Window managers, they know what they are, KDE is too blurry for me. or bloaty?

    Anyway, rant over.

    Not wanting to continue redundant thread - I am not sure what you were arguing, only that you said I posted bad 'ruby' code, which was not actually the point of my code, only the fact that I had found the readability very poor - I also mentioned that as a Java programmer, I would find the readability very poor.

    As an artist I found it ugly.

    Of course, I am biased. I do respect your greater knowledge of Ruby, of course, and that you wrote very nice Ruby code, but also I respect my artistic opinion that it was dog ugly :-)

    I hope that sorts it out.

    You made some valid points too.

    Patents and IP are seperate and copyright has protections.

    You cannot patent an idea that is 'out there' and has pre-documented evidence, because if you document your own idea publicly, you forgo a patent.

    Basically graphical chatrooms, or graphical IM, have been around for a while, in different guises.

    However, will it actually add to the user experience? Will it improve comprehension and communication?

    I herefore provide prior art for a system that will take readings frmo a human and transform them into human readable signs in a virtual avatar on a computer.

    IE, you can smile, and you avatar will smile, you can get angry, and you avatar will become flustered also.

    Hey there you go, might not be enough, but when these little things hit me, I just like to chisel down those 3000 patents to 2999.

    maybe shareyourgoodidea.org should be created where all good ideas are copylefted and recorded with prior art and defended.

    I really find the opengl to be a far more worrying story, who will get linux for free, and pay EXTRA to play games on it because Microsoft want to huddle in opengl.

    Someone should rule that Microsoft cannot buy openGL, just like big company ABC might not be able to buy other big company XYZ if they become to big.

    Taking aside the idea of syntax for moment, this is a RT on 'what is a language' nothing to do with turin complete, OO or AOP or whatever.

    What we really care about: libraries. Being able to do things quickly, without fsking about.

    That is why php is successful, people can just run phpnuke/postnuke etc.

    Perl is also successful because of its roots and flexibility, and easy to get into, and you could just run slashdot on your site if needs be.

    What really helps these, is foundations. php/mysql, perl/whatdoesslashdotuse? People will write in anything if they see an easy way to get something done. Tutorials and support material.

    The point - except for people studying 'computer languages' (as someone woudl study the history of world languages) who will pick up fortran as an option for a new language?

    I am first to admit I do not know the dissadvantages or advantages of it. Are there any? or is it just syntax?

    Java is a language, but much more, it abstracts the whole idea of a language ( no it isn't correct to cite /nets multiple compilers here, no no really this is a different point) and makes it a process.

    So it isn't about the clean syntax OO language, but the process of programming. Through design and development and testing, it has all be rbought up with testing, this is true of almost all languages, but when I think of Java I have a view of all the testing frameworks, libraries and standards.

    To be honest, Fortran now is just a syntax specification, that says, take this line, and make that byte code. That doesn't do it for me.

    One mans syntax is another mans syntax error.

    Not talking about slaskware as the distro, or the server distro, but like linspire, and perhaps SuSE, they are aiming at really easy to run and user experience oriented linux.

    The article picks up on some great standard management applications, KUser and font installer, the whoel article reads like a PCPro article about windows 98 through XP - and many people read those articles and glean new ways to use thier OS.

    even the printer installation looks scarey, but upon reading I can imagine a newbie person running this command, setting it up, seeing the results, and then using the fairly friendly dialogues to complete the tasks.

    Figure 18 I had to check they weren't comparing with windows way of doing things.

    I have to say, linux has crept from being 'will it ever be ready for the desktop' to 'which distro will desktop people pick'

    I recommend you let some of your friends read this and see how easy it all is.

    I wanted to say thanks, and I like the roll your own linux approach of LFS, and looked into it a while ago, but never saw benefits to me personally (I am a user, I develop, but since I am developing outside the space of the OS, I am still just a user)

    Still, I have gotten SuSE 9.1 installed in some pretty cool places, some schools and even a monastary!

    The only problem was, after a simple install, trying to do a confmakemakeinstall I realised SuSE doesn't install the 'bare bones' make system required to, basically, get new software from source.

    To thier credit most software is on the DVD's, but really, an install system should be priority one for linux right now.

    User should hit download.com, see 'most popular' click download, install to ~/bin or /usr/local/bin (depending on sys config) and be off and running before you can say go go gadget rpm manager.

    Even RPM's in SuSE can be a tad narky.

    Yes, you could say that is bourne digitally, this would mean produced, and yes, it is technically correct.

    Ok looking closer born and borne can have the same usage, if your personify the context, in this case the living document of the article, then it can be said to have be born of something.

    I think this is what the person was saying. Although I am hesitant to provide any support for this article myself, as I think thier article was borne out of a cycle to hype up WinFS whihc most people don;t know what it is, or that they need it or don't need it, to enforce yet another upgrade cycle, limiting the life expectancy of a product that should continue to have updates and patches and remain servicable, not be engineered to be self deprecating.

    actually debian would be my favoured, my amiable french amie's love to do a 1 disk boot and install from the net. Never tried it - and I am the first to admit I have limited package knowledge about making a neat and tidy well balanced system.

    I merely want to have the same thing, see what time the file was d/l and say, this file is new, lets fsk with it until someone with authority says it is ok.

    that is oversimplifying it.

    But if someone exploits it, it gets patched. Like jpeg, bmp and ssh exploits.
