  1. Re:Is It Just Me? on IBM To Add Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) To PowerPC · · Score: 2

It is true that IBM is a great innovator in HDD tech, but they really don't have much market share. How often do you come across an IBM drive in the field? They seem to price themselves out of the market. It wouldn't surprise me if they used similar thinking about their processors. Sure, people are willing to pay big money for the big steel, but are they willing to pay big money for a better G4? To my mind the dual G4 sounds far more promising.

  2. Work is never fun on I Love You "Virus" Hates Everyone · · Score: 2

Especially when they make you admin NT servers.

I would imagine that a great number of the /. crew are stuck in the same position as I am, dictated to by corporate or institutional policy. It's not necessarily a matter of coming out of the closet, but of frowning, lowering your head and mumbling about the boss.

  3. Elisha Gray scammed again on Brilliant Careers: Robert Moog · · Score: 3

The article does not mention the real innovator of electronic instruments, the man who invented the oscillator, a basic component of most synths. Just as he the confusion arose surrounding the invention of the telephone (as well as long court battles), so we see that Elisha Gray is once again losing credit for his inventions. The first electronic instrument created was not the theremin or the telharmonium, but rather Gray's Musical Telegraph, created in the 1870's. He tried to make it work over telephone lines. 5. Analytical Engine Emulator on Babbage Engine Printer Finally Available · · Score: 4

Here's a page full of links and info on not only Babbage and his engine but also emulation of his Analytical Engine. There are also links to download the source for the mathematical function library and the java.

  6. I like the possibilities on New Star Trek Series Rumours · · Score: 2

I would love to see them explore the darker side of the birth of the federation. Surely there were some bad moments. One of the things that always bugged me about all of the other Trek series was that everyone was too pristine and goody-good. I'd like to see some massive mess-ups on the part of the young federation. I wonder if Brannon Braga is writing? That's right up his alley.

  7. PE Track Available on Chuck D Gives Props To Napster · · Score: 2

I see a lot of people slaggin' Chuck for not practicing what he preaches and my response is.........browse the website.

    Swindler's Lust

Public Enemy also made their latest album available exclusively available for download from the web almost a month before it was released on cd or vinyl.

The "missing" Public Enemy album that was removed from the website by the label and never released subsequently was mainly an album of remixes and updated versions of old PE tracks. Some very good stuff, I've downloaded a good part of it and enjoyed hearing classics updated to reflect the music as well as the political climes of 1998, which was when it came out.

  8. Community size homogenizes content on The Cluetrain Manifesto · · Score: 2

As we all think so often when reading slashdot, signal to noise becomes a larger and larger issue as the Internet/web community grows. The Cluetrain Manifesto has many good points as it pertains to smaller communities, but to my mind loses its luster I try to reconcile it to a larger community.

Using the example of Slashdot, as we are all familiar with it and its tremendous growth, we can see that outside points-of-view are for the most part moderated down or ignored. It is thought that the cream rises to the top, but I think that this gives too much credit to the average Joe who doesn't necessarily grasp all of the issues surrounding a subject. I'm not saying that there is no forwarding movement in the collective thoughts of Slashdot and I do feel that I'm better for reading it constantly, but the nuggets of goodness have to be searched for at this point.

Not to poke holes in the great American ideal of democracy, but I don't take comfort in knowing that it is the "everyman" who is for the most part making the decisions.

When you can observe everyone's point of view how do you determine what to see?

  9. For those who don't and should know....... on The New World of Gnutella · · Score: 4

The Hacker Manifesto was written back in the ancient eighties by a hacker named Mentor. Read it.......it may be about you.

Also of interest may be the Hacker's Ethic. Something of a code that should be lived by, particularly by those reading these pages. It's where the, "Informationwants/should be free", quote comes from.

  10. I think #4 is my ass... on The Mini-Quickies That Fell To Earth · · Score: 1

......where did you get that pic? I knew I shouldn't have drank so much. Please remove that pic as it is not public domain and I feel violated.

  11. Don't forget about satellite access on Geographic Screening · · Score: 2

Satellite net access can be accessed from anywhere (within limits) and is not tracked/trackable by the man. I had a grey market television dish, illegal in Canada, but the authorities wouldn't have been able to track it down without getting records from the American company or by looking at my house.

  12. Hemos is a mutant on Godzilla vs. Mecha-Quickies · · Score: 2

And I've submitted him to Mutant-Watch. I'd hate to see him hook up with Prof-X and those other mutants and ruin society as we know it. I recommend that we all take Hemos' stories with a grain of salt now that we know that he is a dirty mutant.

Actually, looking at the comments posted on /. you all look to be mutants or at least sympathizers. I'm going to be up all night reporting every one of you.

  14. Ahhh, but the excitement of a live auction on Ebay May Bid For Sotheby's · · Score: 3

That can't be replaced. A big ticket item that you are dying to have for your "collection", picture a Stradavarius, the dignity of the whole affair. That can't be emulated in an online experience. The type of people purchasing at these auctions are the rich elite who would have qualms at buying online just because it lacked some of the status involved in winning a live auction purchase.

    E-bay is too trailerpark.

  15. Less in my mind on Will Microsoft Open Windows Source Code? (No!) · · Score: 5

We're talking about ridiculous amounts of code here. IF it was open sourced most people/"hackers" wouldn't even be able to compile it. It would take a huge amount of concerted effort to release a *fixed* Windows.

The problem with this in my mind is that the majority of Winusers are very apathetic towards their OS. They don't get bug fixes, hell a lot of them don't even know what that means. If Windows code is released it's available for the scrutiny of people who want to do damage. These people.....should they exist and find/take advantage of the weaknesses in Windows code could take out a lot of users at the knees.

I hear a lot of people say that security through obscurity doesn't work but in this case I have to insist that when you take away the obscurity you show all of the flaws. It really hasn't seemed that hard thus far to find security problems.....imagine it multiplied on this scale.

  16. Charlie Benante on The Second Generation Internet · · Score: 1

    "Yo" (I quote from Katz),

I don't mean to go brutally offtopic here, but oh well. I remember Charlie Benante as the drummer from a thrash metal band named Anthrax. And I don't want to Slag or Diss, but "Charlie's" netzero link is a link to a farmsex site. Funny, when taken in the context of the next couple of lines.

....Charlie, if it is you, send me a mail, I'm a huge fan(Just take out the brackets). And moderators, do what you will.

  17. The thing that bothers me... on Letter to the Community on Andover/VA Merger · · Score: 2

......is when he says "*we'll* accept advertisers who are competitors.....". Up till now I've been under the illusion that Rob, Hemos et al have been the ones choosing the advertising, and it always seemed that they were choosing well, perhaps even stuff that they endorsed or thought was interesting. I can't say that every ad interested me, but they all seemed to compliment the idea behind /. quite well. While personally I have a non-click-through policy I would occasionally click a banner on /. to support a site that I love. Now that they don't need the revenue and I've built up in my mind the idea that it's not endorsed stuff so much as bought adverts I don't think I'll ever click-through again.

  18. Re:Why is Slashdot so slow? on Andover.Net and VA Linux Join Together · · Score: 2

I've been seeing little comments about this all over /. all morning and I wasn't surprised that they didn't break the story.

Think of it this way. This is a story that's going to affect Hemos, Taco, et al in a big way and their presentation of it is probably a lot more important than their presentation of other stories in that they will see a lot more criticism for this one. I would imagine that they all sat down at a big table in the geek compound for a couple of hours this morning sipping blueberry squishies and talking this out. It's no surprise that it took a while.

  19. Re:Probably has great applications for walking rob on AI Monkey Robot · · Score: 2

Ahhh, but the fact remains that the swinging monkey robot has the luxury of several attempts to grab at the rung until its swinging slows (from what I read it can also accelerate its swinging with its legs). In the case of a walking robot one missed step and it has fallen, therefore the walking robot cannot as easily learn from its mistakes without having some support other than the two legs that it uses to walk.

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be amazing to see the combined powers of /. secure a box. I'm sure there would be a huge amount of argument about what's to be done, but that's why I love slashdot.

It would also provide a larger analogy for the security of linux if we could show exactly how the box was secured and then challenge people to break in. I know that I would benefit hugely from seeing how it would be done and it would give a lot of people a chance to flex their skills.

  24. In the can..... on Kevin Mitnick Free Today · · Score: 2

In the can means that a film has been shot and is being held off for various reasons. The reference being to the physical film being stored in a film can. This can basically mean at any stage, but most likely pre-editing. Many movies are "in the can" because post-production is so costly and the time is spent soliciting money to get the film back on its feet.
