Must repurchase the OS to gain feature additions and accumulated bug fixes.
I've owned XP since about a year after it was released. Not once have I had to pay again for patches and updates to it. I'll still be able to get patches and updates until the end-of-support is reached.
Sure, you can get support from independent companies and individuals for a price. I'm sure that you can do the same for Windows XP, for a price. GNU/Linux makes it much easier because of source code availability. But that doesn't change the fact that there aren't any Linux distros out there that will support each released version for 12 years like MS is doing with XP.
I wrote a perl script and cron task that I used to use to send about 30 to 50 read receipts to people who request them. It sends them over the course of a week or two. When people ask about getting all of the read receipts, I tell them, "Every time I open your email it lets you know I read it. Isn't that what you wanted?"
Does it help to run the tests on stock installs or should the OS have been used for some time and have a variety of applications installed? I can put together some machines with various versions of Windows to run these tests but they will be fresh installs. Does that help at all?
I don't think this level of laziness should be encouraged
I agree with you 100%. Slashdot needs to reject article summaries that don't answer the "who what why where" questions. This is one such poorly written article summary that should haven't have made it onto the site. A simple link of Dag Wieers' name to a description of him, or a descriptive lead in such as "RPM packaging guru Dag Wieers responds to..." would have helped considerably and would have stopped people such as the GP looking for more information.
Since you work for Sony, you should know that Sony/BMG is not Sony.
That's irrelevant. They're using the Sony name because they want to take advantage of the brand recognition that Sony has. Unfortunately, that means getting the good recognition along with the bad.
Damn near every time I asked for help in an uncertain, wavery manner, people treated me more kindly and patiently than they usually do ever.
They "do ever" where? In Japan? They treated you differently in Japan than they normally do when you needed help? Or are you comparing against how you were treated in your home country? If the latter, how can you differentiate between if it's how your culture treats strangers in need versus the Japanese treat strangers in need?
It's a conglomeration of tech from Xen's Hypervisor and work done by citrix and Novell to make windows the DomU in Xen.
Thanks. I wish the original submitter could have said that. Your one line response had more information in it (and was more interesting) than the entire non-article and summary.
And just what is Hyper-V? The summary doesn't explain it. I even went against the grain here read the article (gasp!) and the article doesn't explain it. It implies that it might have something to do with virtualization but doesn't really explain itself. The "article" appeared to be more of a comment than news.

Holy crap. This guy is talking WAY too fast.

Some pictures of the new setup would be great.
Ah. I've never seen it. I'm more of a scifi fan.
You think I sell candles?
What is Twitter and why is it significant that they are abandoning it as opposed to anyone else?
- Submitted articles go into a queue and there's no way to see when the article is submitted
- The poster gives no indication of where in the world he lives or what working hours he works
You start going on about American's but if this person isn't an American, what does he care about that perspective?I didn't know you were a Barry White fan.
Never, never gonna give you up
I'm never, ever gonna stop
Not the way I feel about you
Girl, I just can't live without you
I'm never, ever gonna quit
`Cause quittin' just ain't my stick
I'm gonna stay right here with you
Do all the things you want me to
Whatever you want
Girl, you got
And whatever you need
I don't want to see you without it
You've given me much more
Than words could ever say
And oh, my dear, I'll be right here
Until my dyin' day
What the hell is a "Griefer?"
