It might look as if the recycling is free. But as a former middle management executive of an IT company, I can attest that in the real world, "nothing is free!"..."there is no free lunch anywhere." How do you justify that to stock-holders? Apple has made calculations to the effect that the money spent will be re-obtained [from consumers] somehow. Like it or not. This is for PR purposes. Remember M$ giving away US$ 1 billion in software "for free?" Was the software really free of charge? You answer that.
Too much heat is what they will find, among other supprises. Now, I hope they will be able to devise a means of harnessing this heat to generate electricity. I guess folks from Iceland are just near this heat and this is why they rely so much on geo-thermal electric generation.
My wish is for an experienced hacker to port Winamp to Linux the moment the code is open sourced. Will this happen? I do not see any Linux native application that can stand in place of Winamp.
I know we have the likes of AmaroK, XMMS...but none of these does any video!
Efforts to increase the visibility of OSS in Europe will be an uphill battle. Why? Because as we have heard before, some of the European Union's parliamentarians are in M$'s pockets so to speak. This is evidenced by the fact that even the most obvious reasons to adopt OSS in Europe are met by belief in lies or FUD.
To make matters worse, journalists writing about computers and technology do not see OSS an an option in many cases.
Is there any chance of Debian adopting autopackage http://autopackage.org/? I wish they did because though it (autopackage) might have its quirks, the best implementation to package manegement will not necessarily help in World domination. I undertsnd that M$ also is relevant here.
...because it's already slashdotted! Since the slashdot effect is almost always guaranteed here at slashdot, what can really be done to avoid it? We do really need a solution to this effect.
What about slashdot editors setting up a mirror before posting?
What will be the impact on Desktop Linux? I ask this because I wonder whether my SuSE 9.2 Linux desktop will stop feeling "heavy" with this "dual core" stuff. Imagine this: You click on a desktop icon and the response comes after about 3-4 seconds. In openOffice.org, it's even worse. I am using an AMD Sempron 2800+ with 512MB of RAM.
...On the other hand, it is hurting to see that in a land that encourages free private enterprise in addition to public service, the proponents of these failing idea(s) do not even seem to see that what they are doing goes against this fundamental ideal!
No wonder we are no longer competitive as a nation and studies are suggesting that if the trend continues, up to one-half of the USA will be "foreign" owned in 25 years!
...but I was too young to even know what a computer is! I guess one must find himself at the right place at the right time...and in this case..."with the right knowledge." What is the next big thing? I am sure I am of age now.
I'll not miss IE7 since I am using Windows 2000 in addition to SuSE Linux 9.2. My problem which is very well known I guess, is how to get rid of the version of IE installed on my system. I kind of gave up! I have Firefox 1.04 installed and even went ahead to make it the "default" browser.
My problem comes when using third-party software. You see, in some of these software(s) like Adobe's latest release (7.0), CCleaner and the like, when you try to visit the web from within the software, IE is started! This really bothers me a lot but I am no hacker to delve into the "DNA" of Windows.
Slashdotters, googling for solutions has not helped so, please help. Thanx.
This development is good for Linux and the BBC but I am waiting for the BBC to put up broadcast streams in the ogg theora format. How can we put some kind of pressure on them?
For those in the know; is it true that for a company like the BBC, adding another format like OGG considerably takes resources and time? If this is the case, slashdotters in the UK could volunteer valuable time and intellectual capital.
I'd like to see comparison notes with Firefox. Any slashdot hacker/software-engineer care to elaborate how the Firefox team has handled some of the issues this IE engineer has raised?
>it puts the government in control of what you can see and do online
Not possible. The litigious American public will sue if this happens. Who will determine what is appropriate and what isn't?
On a side note, it is hurting to see that in a land that encourages free private enterprise (read USA), the proponents of this idea do not even seem to see that what they are proposing goes against this fundamental ideal! Are pundits involved here?
Because I do not like Yahoo. They will not let me use Firefox to use their launchcast services. Try http://launch.yahoo.com/launchcast/ with Firefox and tell me what you see. There is more than this of course.
...is to synchronize the release of tools for major browsers including Firefox. That is, they (Google) should release their "add-ons" at once for all browsers. This is because if they for example released this for IE first, by the time that for Firefox is released, the steam is almost out.
Next, my request is to make sure they go for M$ and Yahoo head on. I need GoogleBiz (to check my stocks), I need GoogleMusic, GoogleRadio and all that is possible.
Where is SuSE/Novell in all this? To me, it seems RedHat is taking all the [Linux] limelight. Packages for RedHat seem to be more numerous on the internet than those for SuSE. Certification is done on RedHat first...then SuSE follows.
None the less, Novell has taken some "right" steps by for example releasing YaST and other software as GPL and supporting Mono.
I suggest Novell provides hobbyist SuSE ISOs and probably starts shipping them like Ubuntu is doing. I also think adopting autopackage http://autopackage.org/ would do no harm to them.
That aside; if it takes a company like Netcraft almost 6 months to come out with a Linux version, to me that's being slow to act. Thanx never-the-less to Netcraft.
Quote:"redistributions of the official Mozilla releases are never going to give you security updates as quickly as Mozilla".
I read the above quote may times over and the person from RedHat's response. I kept asking myself over and over again...WHY? Because if Mozilla operated the same way other OSS projects do by default, I can only see good things out of this. I wonder why they choose to do things this way.

Does this mean Apple is going X86 and that I will be able to utilize my spare AMD Sempron 2800+ soon?
This is good news. Next, we need "Full Democracy" in selecting foundation officials. We could adopt Debian's approach.
I know we have the likes of AmaroK, XMMS...but none of these does any video!
The site is still in Beta! Is it launched while still in beta?
This is one major problem I see with Novell and it also paints a bad picture. Why won't Novell do this noble thing?
To make matters worse, journalists writing about computers and technology do not see OSS an an option in many cases.

Ajax is also a city in Ontario CANADA!
He forgot this [java] technology. I consider it a serious contender based on Java. Slashdotters, point your browsers to http://stream.fluendo.com/demo/office/audiovideo/j ava.php to see what I am talking about.

American: Give me a ride!
British: Give me a lift!
American: What is the make of your truck?
British: What is the make of your lorry?
And so many more. What amazes me is that every party thinks it alone is right.
