Some Ubuntu community members were downright shocked, and many were ultimately dissatisfied with the final product.
Why should this happen? Why should "some community members" be shocked if Ubuntu is being developed as "an Open Source OS?" And I guess they were following Ubuntu's development pretty closely.
I need this question answered: Is Mark Shuttleworth a benevolent dictator in Ubuntu's Development?
I suggest an improvement to Firefox 2.0. This refers to browsing an un-secure site. Currently, the "warning" icon that embeds itself in the location bar is not that visible. I suggest programmers introduce one that is clearly visible or change the color of the location bar background when such a site is hit.
On the subject of phishing, I have not come across one, so my request is for a slashdotter to point me to an example so that I can check out one of Firefox's much hyped goodies. Thanks.
You laud the ability of foreigners to write English. Have you ever heard them talk? They are so fluent in writing because it is primarily how they have learned the language. English has a horrible writing system, because the writing does not reflect the pronunciation. That is why people who speak English natively make more errors in their writing.
First: "Have you heard them talk?" Certainly. This whole business of saying who talks best is subjective. I have seen native English folks who say the way Americans talk is horrible. Grammar being wrong etc etc. All people have an accent so to me, you are one of the people who'd group others who do not talk the way you want in that "disadvantaged" group. Even in America, people from different areas talk and speak differently. I guess it is the same in Finland.
Let me inform you: English is not my first language but I remember being asked to write my supervisor's reports for her because she could not pick the right words in the situation. The problem with people like you and most of humanity is that you do not think "out-of-the-box!" Once you do, you will understand why people whose 1st language is not English can still contribute meaningfully in society.
On discipline, I am sure you know that there are kids who are just indisciplined. They just will not listen however much one tries. It's these kids that get resources wasted.
Nothing will be possible without instilling discipline in American schools. One only needs to visit schools even in the 3rd world to see how much discipline there is in schools over there. No wonder the products of those schools come over here and excel, leaving American kids behind!
What hurts me most is the fact that these kids excel at written English and write much better essays yet they have to learn the language in addition to their vernaculars. American kids, who [mostly] speak English from childhood have horrible English, so solve the discipline question then we can go from there.
Can someone advise an inquisitive soul as to whether Firebird and its [database] engine, is a serious replacement to Microsoft's front-end (Access) and its Jet engine? I really miss the flexibility, the possibility of adding business logic, and level of configuration possible with Access. Is this possible with this latest Firebird?
You know what, I am a nobody in the Linux world, but I support the deal. I have read what I think are the terms and have found that they not that bad.
We'll be able to get SuSE Linux as we're getting the OS now. The difference is that the "threat" of suits will not be hanging on users of SuSE. This is not bad at all in my opinion. One thing I am sure of is that we will be able to play MS media files and use OpenOffice.org without fearing that a suit might be coming anytime.
Now, can any slashdoter tell me why this deal is really bad and should be avoided?
Have Symantec solved their issues with Microsoft? If not, be prepared for an even louder rant from Symantec. Adobe should also watch out. For me, I doubt I will touch this Vista thingie anytime soon. Windows 2K and Xandros are still doing OK for me.
In my situation, a 5MB/s internet link and a Windows 2K machine with the latest patches and Firefox 2.0, the Gmail interface takes more than 4 seconds. I am not impressed with this. But when I boot into Ubuntu, the same Gmail takes less time than on windows, which is good enough.
Is the reference on everything *Java*, when pundits talk about Sun and its impending change of the Java license...or is it only what we Joe Users download in order to play games and read real time stock chart information which is the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)? A slashdotter seeks clarification. Thanks.
Instead of focusing on the "old", they focus on the so called "young", yet we all are growing old and cannot do anything about it! Disappointed is me here. What the heck!
My fellow slashdotters, before you criticize, just remember that the countires on that list are there according to a select group's opinion. It does not mean it's the truth. Even if it were, freedom and liberty also include the freedom and liberty to do as one wishes, even if we might not agree with what a particular entity does.
That's why for example, China, Iran, Burma and the USA are in the same group of countries that execute "criminals" yet the USA champions itself as a defender of rights...including the right to life!
On this one thing, Iran, which calls the US "The Great Satan" and the USA, which calls Iran a member of the "Axis of Evil," are in the same group! Ironic? You tell me.
Under the terms of the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), every state however good or bad, rogue or not, has the right to pursue nuclear ambitions for "peaceful" purposes. Now, this does not mean that some of the technology could be used for non-peaceful purposes.
When it comes to non peaceful purposes like the nuclear bomb, the US does not have an answer! So our government will try to deny nuclear know how to countries it perceives as a threat.
Remember our president refers to "Nuclear" as "Nucilar"! What does not help the situation is the fact that our government continues to hang onto its nuclear arsenal, while boasting that it will develop so called "mini-nukes", and it does not want others to have the same technology! Guys, we're damned! We continue to be whipped in IRAQ and the impending nuclear madness or race does not help matters.
He argues that Microsoft and Google are focusing so much on each other, that both will either fail to notice the landscape is changing underfoot -- or will be unable to adapt quickly enough.
This is the usual rant from pundits. Unfortunately, it does not help at all. This pundit, if he's one, doesn't tell us how exactly the "landscape is changing underfoot." These are events that are seemingly happening now, so the pundit should be able to say what is being ignored.
Advice to slashdotters: Ignore these kinds of posts. Who has forgotten Gartner's predictions on Linux?
"...At this point, the only thing that's certain is that Red Hat needs to figure out how to keep their large Oracle Enterprise clients on board or risk becoming a takeover target (undoubtably, with Oracle leading the list of potentially bidders)."
I know that deep within each of RedHat and Oracle's camp, these two companies agree in this:
It's all about the money, but in my not so humble opinion, I see RedHat as having an uphill battle on this one.
I think the reason why our testosterone levels are reduced across all age groups is because we use lots of hormones, [unnecessary] medications, artificial products in our food stuffs.
On a recent trip to East Africa, the food I ate over there tasted different and better! The bananas and all other fruits had a good aroma to them. Contrast that with the fruit section of most of our supermarkets and you'll hardly smell any presence of fruits nearby!
In the part of East Africa I visited, monkeys smell these fruits from miles away and come to have a feast. There were also lots of men in their sixties who had kids as children. They told me they were still sexually active. In America, such a man would most probably have to utilize the blue pill! This might also explain the fact that despite the scourge of AIDS, the population in Africa is still growing exponentially. Pollution also plays a hand in my opinion. If you differ, get a white wet and hang it outside. You'll be surprised about what color it would become after a few hours. Reason: Pollution, period.
I am a fellow geek who needs help. I know he's going to spend at least 20 million dollars on this project. Meanwhile, I am drowning in debt (mainly student debt), and going no where! I need a few tens of thousands of dollars. I know he can do something for a fellow geek.
For the record, I welcome any help from the slashdot fraternity too.
Let the Open Source community do something about Firefox extensions. For those we hope to attract with extensions, they will find that very few are available for version 2.0! I have only seen ForecastFox that will work on the 1.5.x and the 2.0 series of Firefox.
When we tout the advantages of Open Source, the availability of extensions on time, is not something we should fail on. After all, there have been a number of betas and release candidates released before this major one. Tests could be done on those.
One problem I have seen with this new version is that its default theme is ugly! I appreciate that in consumes less memory and feels a bit more snappier than the older version.
The re-organzation that has been made in the preferences section is also highly appreciated. The same applies to spell checking - its best feature in my opinion.
I have one question though. Is Firefox a GTK application? I see it resembles a GTK application and uses its dialogs. If not, when shall we see a KDE like looking Firefox? KDE folks, do something.
Mean while, those who expect to get their hands dirty with this version will have to wait for their FTP site is already slashdotted!
I care less about what RMS does. As an upcoming developer, if I am not happy with RMS' new GPL version, I simply continue to use version 2, which I am very happy about. That's the beauty of the GPL v.2. Am I wrong on this?
Why should this happen? Why should "some community members" be shocked if Ubuntu is being developed as "an Open Source OS?" And I guess they were following Ubuntu's development pretty closely.
I need this question answered: Is Mark Shuttleworth a benevolent dictator in Ubuntu's Development?
Thank you! You see, I had never hit a suspected phishing site before! Thanks once again.
On the subject of phishing, I have not come across one, so my request is for a slashdotter to point me to an example so that I can check out one of Firefox's much hyped goodies. Thanks.

This can bite the other way too. In other words, substitute Novell for M$ and vice versa.

My advice to Google is this: Prepare some form of profit sharing and all potential suits will be stopped din their tracks.

Says who? I could also say that Freedom and Liberty come with no appendages whatsoever.
Answer: No I don't!
Disclaimer: I do not know what I am talking about.

Can anyone tell me whether this new version will play .ogg files by default? If not where can one grab a plug-in? Thanx.

Why is it taking too long? Isn't this information about 2 or 3 years old? I thought they had completed the migration.
