So what you're saying is that you cannot seek in IP-streamed music, but you can seek in local files (e.g. on Xbox's HDD, from external data storage via USB)? Eep!

Put your phone next to your speakers and listen to the noise when it rings. That's the speaker's problem, not the phone's. The phone is licensed for its radio wave frequencies it uses, and the speakers are not, so the speakers must use insulated wires or just deal with the annoying noise.

You could probably get at least a basic drum kit going at that price using the cheap parts they use already. Three toms, a snare, a bass, high-hat, and crash and ride cymbals. Just think along the style of electronic drums except they won't be as extendable obviously.

Now if they did allow extensions or at least a MIDI input, us musicians could plug in and have even more fun! :D

  17. Don't think so. on Rock Band As the Costly New MTV? · · Score: 1

Introducing new bands, songs, and sounds to consumers via videogames seems like a fairly natural way of trying things. Consumers exist to consume "content", that is, consume it passively. Since we're not talking about customers of Harmonix (i.e. the people buying Guitar Hero games), nor are we talking about gamers in general, we can't assume anything will be able to influence consumers that involve active entertainment.

Never underestimate the apathy of consumers! Your customers, however, are more likely to enjoy learning about new bands they can listen to and perhaps go to concerts of and purchase albums of.

I know this isn't the ideal situation, but you can configure wpa_supplicant for the networks you have that use WPA and co., as well as unsecured networks, and I believe you can have it autojoin a network if none of the preferred networks are available.

Also, wpa_supplicant has a GUI (called wpa_gui, imagine that) that you should check out (aptitude install wpagui).

More companies that provide services for a free product and make a profit: Sun, IBM (more than just Linux), Novell (more than just Linux), Canonical (more than just Linux), MySQL AB, Yahoo! (most of their services are free (i.e. ad-supported), but paid support versions exist), Trolltech (Qt and other GUI toolkits), Oracle (more than just Linux), and SourceForge. There are even organisations like OpenBSD and the Free Software Foundation that make money selling their own free/libre and open source software on physical media. There's also something called "donations" where users of your software will attribute their own price for the software and will pay you that amount (usually on a regular basis as well).

Also, if you were alive back in the beginning UNIX days, you'd know that all software came with source code included so that you could compile it for your particular setup as well as modify it to meet your needs. In fact, BSD was started as a collection of patches for UNIX, and that eventually became its own operating system (see FreeBSD and derivatives). So not even can you make money on free software, you can also make money while also giving the source code to your customers as well!

The 3d stuff uses an X extension called Composite, and anything is welcome to use it. Xorg contains AIGLX, an implementation of Composite, and then there's XGL (an older X server specifically created for Composite). So, Fluxbox would only need to use the Composite extension to get 3d effects.
