50$ a year for a Fancy All-In-One gui to your basic windows programs sound like a lot to me. Doesnt even backup to an remote backup server. Sadly Mac suckers (em, users) have been paying for years, Redmond is catching up and getting in on the action.

Question 1: Are norton Consumer level products (Norton/symantec Antivirus 2006 for example) in this list.

Question 2: Where does this security vulnerability lie? In the scanning engine or in the GUI appliation wrapper or helper dll. This could let us know if the Symantec Antivirus 9 -> 1 are bad.

Im holding Slashdot to a Slashback on this as this unfolds.

Also if the above post is correct and it needs 83 MB the OnMac version takes much less. Sure the install is not as pretty but it has a good method of doing it.

I guess the kicker in this case was the drivers that Boot Camp gives. Oh well. Now its official but its good to see that hackers (people who just mod software for fun) got it to work first. Apple is just being nice now.

Open sorce has one major advantage over a closed source product. It is the power of multiple people. In a community setting people give ideas, fix problems, and help troubleshoot. In a closed source project the company simply allows people to help with new ideas and FAQs.

If a company wants to take something away it is that many people (when they contribute) can help to make the solution better.

Here is an idea. Create a group of people who are trusted but not necessarly part of the company. Allow them to work on createing new ideas based on seeing the frame work. Think of it as a hybrid close/open system, a "Confidential Code" shall we say. These programers can do bounties on bugs, test beta versions or write new functionality for submission and integration into the main program.

This way they can get outside help on the areas they would rather not worry about. Community. When it is there it really helps.

  25. Gizmo Project on Intel and Skype Exclude AMD · · Score: 1
Look to the Gizmo Project founded by Linspire man Michael Robertson. Here is a blurb from one of his emails:
Gizmo Project voice calling and IM is booming on Macintosh, Microsoft Windows, and Linux computers because Gizmo Project works well and connects with every type of device like wifi phones, other VOIP and IM directories like GoogleTalk and even the popular open source Asterisk PBX software. I think people are beginning to understand the difference between Skype who walls their customers in and won't play nicely with anyone and SIPphone who connects to everyone making it possible to have just one address. Next week SIPphone will announce closing of a major venture capital deal which will help the company grow even faster.
I doubt this will be the end of skype and it will swing few people but it does show a disturbing trend in what could come.

BTW: Gizmo project will connect to Google Talk but i dont think it does voice.
