I don't have to be honest... I am always honest. I dislike the MIR rebate "scam," but other than that, I like Best Buy. It has the best selection of... well, pretty much everything they carry in my area, and their prices are usually better for most items they carry.
I have, however, sent in several $50 rebates and never received them.
He didn't mention a "conspiracy theory." He merely pointed out that the guy used BB's stock symbol in his post, possibly demonstrating a bias towards Best Buy. I mean, why would anyone use BB's stock symbol when speaking of BB on slashdot. Does he own stock in Best Buy?
Now, that doesn't mean his example was wrong, but perhaps his bias towards Best Buy has an influence on his opinion of waiting 3, 6, 12 months or more to get that $50 dollar rebate, if it even shows up in the mail at all. Also, how do we really know his "random" example was really random?
Read the documentation. Check the forums. Read the error messages. OR, don't use testing packages. It's really that simple.
I'm sorry to say it, but if you don't know what you're doing, you shouldn't be screwing around unless you're willing to accept some breakage now and then. Instead of jumping from distro to distro at any sign of trouble, why not try to figure out what's wrong and attempting to fix it. If you're not willing to do that, I don't understand why you were trying out unstable packages.
DRM in any form is never acceptable, at least DRM on video and music. DRM ties the media to the fleeting piece of consumer electronics it is used on, whereas the media itself is timeless. Games, for example, are another matter, since they are inherently tied to the machine.
I guess when 99.9% of music and movies are one-off throwaway bullshit, people just don't care. We've become a culture of lazy, apathetic, drooling clods who suck up whatever we are handed. Witness the rise of the iTMS, a whole market of people mostly buying single tracks instead of albums.
Good artists produce good music, generally a bunch of tracks which make up a whole(ie., an ALBUM), that are worth keeping forever. Good movies are worth keeping forever. Good books are worth keeping forever.
Acceptance of DRM is just a sign of how pathetic our culture has become. Apparently, modern culture is for sale, and CHEAP! Only $.99 at the iTMS.
The new Zelda looks like it's getting back to what Zelda was on the N64. Personally, after watching several pieces of footage for the new Zelda, and seeing the different sorts of new gameplay it is bringing, I am very excited about this game. The graphics look very nice and all, nothing too fancy, but the artwork is what serves to differentiate games graphically these days, and Zelda is looking fantastic.
Silly, cutsie, cell-shaded, etc. graphics are not the only way to give a game unique visual appeal. If this guy thinks all games are starting to look the same, he's really not looking, IMO.
That hasn't even BEGUN to happen with consoles. Console generations are generally at least 5 years apart, whereas new high-end video cards are released like ever single year.
People jump to upgrade graphics cards based on the games they want to play. Several notable games have caused huge surges in card sales.
With PC games in general waning in popularity, and with current cheap cards being able to play the top games well enough, it's no wonder people aren't jumping to buy the latest and greatest all the time.
You couldn't be more wrong. What this would create is not a society that fights for freedom and an economy controlled by the people, but an economy controlled by gangs. Think prohibition, it wasn't even that long ago.
Longer answer: People who respect the GPL generally also respect the rights of others with regards to copyright, but not when they try to make their rights trump all others.
Just because they support something doesn't mean they don't hate it. Indeed, some of the rhetoric from Sun's executives leads me to believe that they do in fact hate Linux and Open Source, and support both only because that's what people are asking for.
Open Source also makes for a good weapon against competitors. Open sourcing StarOffice, and now Solaris, was a strategic move by Sun.
Desktop Linux IS getting standardization. In fact, a lot of it has (relatively)silently been implemented recently. Copying/pasting of all sorts of data, among other things, is (admittedly about damn time) starting to be flushed out.
Look no further than freedesktop.org for proof of the progress that is being made.
Now KDE and GNOME may never standardize completely on look and feel, but the defaults should eventually be close enough that they are comfortable for anyone. In fact I don't see that as a problem as we've never had anyone complain about that here.
Please mod the parent comment up. I was going to point out the same thing, but here it is already done and still sitting at Score: 2. Bonch was wrong on that point, pure and simple. The parent comment demonstrates that. Therefore, considering that bonch's post is receiving positive moderation, the parent comment deserves at least as much positive moderation so people are shown a rebuttal.
That last paragraph is complete hogwash. If you consider changing directory structure "rewriting," I don't want to run any software coming out of your tiny shop.
And for the record, I have never seen an app that only runs on one Linux distro. It's pretty easy to package a couple libs a program needs if different distros are likely to include versions that might not work. I've seen a LOT more breakage on OS X.
I have played games my whole life. I have surrounded myself by other gamers my whole life. I have never had any violence done to me by another avid gamer. I was, however, back in high school assaulted by football players on quite a few occasions. I believe football made them violent. Please ban football.
Grammar and spelling issues aside, that was an excellent comment.:) And you bring to light exactly what this is, which is to say it is simply a "whitch[sic] hunt."
If this passes, then we someone in a position to be heard needs to point out that the Bible depicts extreme violence. Maybe we should ban that as well.
That's a very good point, especially considering how easy it is for a virus or trojan to do that. What's more, that could be a very beneficial(to said virus or trojan) thing to do, to be sure that the infected box is never updated and remains vulnerable.
Frankly, I don't think Bush consults God or Jesus before making decisions. It seems to me that he simply uses their names as a tool to gather support for furthering his own agenda.
The alternative to that theory is that he really does believe his own bullshit and is very, very insane.

Touché!

Please, people, think of the monitors!

Fuck this shit...

Heh. Whew, they're really going to clean up it seems.

This shit's got to stop somewhere, and that's all there is too it. Don't sell out.
quit being such a fucking asshole.
Ok, more seriously... Report the GPL abuse to www.gpl-violations.org. Get a new job. Be sure to let your current employer know what assholes they are.

BTW, I'm referring to American football.

I'm not certain which is worse.
