    - Driver support. While most chips work, they don't take advantage of most advanced features of most cards. 3D sound, surround sound, even tone controls are missing with most boards.

    - Sound APIs. There are numerous, incompatible sound APIs. It is, as far as I can tell, impossible to develop an app for Linux that uses sound but doesn't conflict with other components of the system. Many desktops use a sound server, like arts or esd. If you run, say, a game, hopefully there aren't any beeps within 2 seconds of the game opening the sound device, else it will be busy(unless you have a sound card with a hardware mixer, that is supported in linux with a driver that properly handles said hardware mixer - ie. unless you have a SB Live).

Alsa was supposed to be the be all end all of sound on Linux. It has failed, miserably. We still have no software mixing fallback for cards lacking hardware mixing. Direct Sound has had this for... like 7 or 8 years.

The only thing Alsa offers to handle software mixing is dmix, which is just slightly more than worthless. It doesn't even work for most apps that use the Alsa API. Configuring it to work right is also absolutely out of the question for 99% of Linux users. The information you will find on google will quite likely leave you with tinny sound or awful skipping.

I'm at the point these days where I hate software. All software. It's all shitty, literally all of it. After all these years, we should have much better software. OS X, Windows, Linux... Yeah, I'm sorry but they all suck, truly.

But anyway, I'm not going to go into it all right now, I just want to mention some problems I've had with windows recently, on my laptop.

I have an HP ZD7000. It's a pretty decent piece of hardware, if you don't mind the size and weight. It's actually not too heavy considering the size and quality of the display and the hardware inside the thing. It's a beast. 3.2 P4 w/hyperthreading, GeForce FX Go 5700 128M, 17" widescreen display, 1680x1040 native resolution.

Getting this thing in proper order for gaming was not easy. The only "signed" video drivers available are somewhat old(so no HL2 or Doom3 perf. improvements), and don't support a large number of resolutions! As far as I could tell, there's no way to tell windows that there's other resolutions that should be supported, so it is necessary to "hack" the .inf file(s) for the video driver. Long story short, I used the latest NVIDIA drivers(which DO NO support Go chipsets, as laptop vendors are _supposed_ to customize the drivers for their specific power / resolutions / etc.) with a hacked up .inf file, which I had to add my own resolutions to, had to instruct windows to ignore the lack of proper signage, and manually clean out the previous driver files prior so that it didn't use the wrong files. Very, very shitty process.

Linux is just as bad, of course. To get everything working on Linux, you have to download the NVIDIA drivers, install them and get them working(tls / no-tls, wtf?), and add several resolutions by hand to get them working. I have no idea how to come up with the timing BS on my own... I've done it before, but that was 5+ years ago, so... Without google, there's no way I would have been able to get all the resolutions I wanted working.

I don't know how many hours I spent f*cking with windows so I could play HL2 in all(ok, most) of its glory, but I don't want to go through it again.

Who's fault is it? NVIDIA's, HP's, Microsoft's? Maybe a little of all of them, perhaps mostly HP for not having updated drivers(and not even including all the supported resolutions OF THEIR OWN HARDWARE!), but is it too much to ask that they update their "customized" driver every time NVIDIA releases a new driver? And why doesn't it Just Work? Shouldn't it somehow know all the resolutions it supports on its own? Why the #$@% do I have to manually clean out driver files to prevent Windows from screwing up?

  16. yes, but that was WWII on Censored Nagasaki Bomb Story Found · · Score: 1
Funny enough, I was thinking about WWII this morning while getting ready to go to work. I was specifically thinking about the atomic bomb, the making of it, the science and engineering, and the eventual deployment of it against the Japanese. I thought about Nanking, the allied firebombing of European cities, how all that compared to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Was it justified? Would the alternative have been worse?

Many people today point at the U.S. and use actions from WWII in their arguments regarding U.S. actions today. Of course, they only do themselves and their arguments a disservice. Allied Europeans helped to build the bombs, provided resources, condoned their use, etc. It was a question of justification at the time; it was just survival. In fact, those primitive nuclear weapons did far less damage than the many firebombings during WWII. They were something people had never seen. It was shocking and terrible. It was a more effective terrorism than the firebombing that had been engaged in previously. The firebombing that was initiated by the European Allies.

People continue to make all kinds of silly justifications, "Hiroshima was payback for Pearl Harbour,"(payback is justification?) and criticisms, "The U.S. is the only country to ever use a nuclear bomb"(the point being that, the U.S. is and always has been, evil). Of course, the truth is that it was a strategic action taken during the greatest(ie. most fucking horriffic) war of all of human history. The devastation caused by the atom bomb is a drop in the bucket in the context of WWII.

Was it justified? Was it wrong? Those questions have very little meaning. It is just not that simple; all meaning is lost when looked at in such simple terms. There is nothing to be learned when viewed out of its historic context.

OTOH, since the discussion here is veering all over the place, I submit that the current U.S. administration's discussion about deploying tactical nukes is pure fucking insanity and clearly shows just how stupid and ignorant they are, and further that the administration's lying to the public to further its agenda is a clear fucking sign regarding its (lack of) integrity and self-serving purposes.
