My understanding was that Apple chose to go with KHTML because it was a much smaller codebase. Something like only 40k lines of code at the time(wow!), while Gecko was several hundred-thousand or something.
The devs were able to get up to speed really quickly.
As far as rendering speed... I know several Mac users(coworkers actually) who switched back to Firefox because it's quicker for them(ie. for the sites they visit). But I have indeed found some sites to render much faster in KHTML.
I generally use Gecko(Galeon), but I often use Konqueror to verify KHTML compatibility of sites I make, or just to see how the latest version is.

At that point, real innovation will have moved overseas, and the USPTO will be irrelevant.
What do the major American CEOs care? They're moving it overseas anyway! Maybe that's what they want. The X.org X server is implementing loads of new graphics features, and since forking from XFree, they're actually getting done. Also, most of E17's base libraries are mostly done, and implement a lot of features MS is in the process of "inventing."
If MS bought Sun, they'd probably just kill Java, or make future versions target only dotNET. If that happened, would Java have a future, or is the Java license too strict to see it moved forward by someone else?

That our politicians are working mostly for the corporations makes this a somewhat fascist country.
