I think it's a perfectly reasonable request of transgaming to ask the debian maintainers to not package a binary build of winex from their cvs repository, that could really cut into their bottom line, which, despite what so many here say, is important for a company.
People like to bitch about transgaming, but they really have done nothing wrong. They grabbed wine, used it according to the license attached to it, offered to trade code to/from the main wine tree. There's nothing wrong with that, if the wine developers didn't want their code used in that manner they should have (L)GPLed it from the start.
Similarly, if the debian crew decides to ignore transgaming's request and package winex in the distribution anyway, transgaming has nothing to complain about, but they can decide to change their license if they think they need too.
I think everyone needs a nice fine glass of STFU.

Lol, I think he was just ASKING for this slashdotting!
That is not correct, the only things missing from the current CVS is safedisk support and some install-shield code(both because of licensing and with safedisk probably the DMCA as well).
You can see for yourself, download the cvs tree and compile it, use a nocd crack for max payne or aoe and you'll see that they run. (my friend does this)
It is stated on Transgaming's website regarding The Sims for Linux, that to get The Sims working they actually had to extensively(for a not-really-a-complete-port anyay) modify the Sims source code to get it working.
I don't know if that means it's using a wine executable to run a windows binary, or if they used libwine to compile a native linux binary, I don't own a Linux version of the Sims.
You should also note that the Windows version of The Sims does not run under winex at this point.
Furthermore, I'd like to point out to all the naysayers that Transgaming has come through with EVERYTHING they said they would just as quickly as they said they would, and they have also contributed a great deal of code back to the original wine project, and their code(minus safedisc) is available from sourceforge.
Sony, Nintendo, Sega, they've all been in my living room. Personally, I hate (despise!) all three of those companies, but that's par for the course where large companies are concerned. BUT, their products do what they're supposed to, haven't attempted to "spy" on me, haven't tried to force entire industries down paths that leave the consumer and competitors out to dry(D3D?, etc..). Instead of concentrating on creating monopolies, these three companies have concentrated on making a better product than the others, and all three have done that in one way or another time and time again.
Now we have Microsoft... I *DON'T* want them in my living room, EVER!
First off, you are a fucking asshole! You complete dick, you spoiled(to a admittedly small extent) EP2 for me. Why the fuck did you feel the need to do that? Fucking asshole...
Second, if your 16 yo cousing blacked out on a roller coaster and continued to have blackout problems for a few months afterwards, there was almost definately ALREADY SOMETHING WRONG!!
Third, you asshole! WTF is wrong with you? Why do you feel the need to be an ass?
Oh please get this awful filth off the front page of/.. Sure, U-571 wasn't a really great film or anything, but this reviewer is going nuts about historical inaccuracy in a film that is intended to be fiction.
I agree with you 100%, but I would like to add to that. I think the DMCA takes the control of information to a level much like that of a fascist state. Just look at all the legitimate things it has been wreaking havok upon, decss, ebook decrypting, crypto research, bnetd, google/xenu.net, etc.(there's quite a few more, but I can only name so many off the top of my head)
"Apparently it's a version videotaped in the theater, which they're worried will cut into DVD sales (?)"
Ok, so some jackass taped the movie in the theater and distrubuted it on the net? What would the film industry propose legislators do to stop this? Completely ban all video playing/recording software that can play non-DRMed video?
Wouldn't that require that PCs basically become set-top boxes? Wouldn't that damage the computer industry more than the entire film industry is worth?
See, the #1 thing the computer industry has going for it with regards to fighting this type of legislation is that it is worth far, far more than the entire film industry. But when senators and congress-critters are in the pockets of media companies, they throw the economy out the window to line thier own pockets with dirty money from Hollywood.
In my humble opinion, that is such a great betrayal of the public trust as to be worthy of death. Think about it, legislators knowingly damaging the economy to line their own pockets. That, to some degree at least, puts people out on the street, broke, without healthcare, etc.
necessary disclaimer: when I say "worthy of death", I don't mean they should be killed, I'm strongly against the death penalty. I simply mean that thier life is worth nothing to the world, and in fact the world would be a better place without them.
My fiancee, even after switching to win2000, found IE to be too unstable, and performed very poorly on her celery 300. I installed Mozilla on her machine and told her to try it out, and she has been using it ever since.
She particularly likes the tabbed browsing, stability, and blocking popups.
Really, this is the most insightful post I've ever seen regarding these people. I was planning to post nearly the exact same thing, and I certainly didn't mean for it to be funny.
Just try dealing with these people, or the many others doing the same thing, and you will understand exactly what I mean.
I don't even want to talk about my dealings with them... just don't feel like talking about it...
"If G. exists outside the universe, then the universe could act on G., making G. not perfect."
Just how do you come to that conclusion, that's ridiculous. There is absolutely no basis for that statement at all, you simply pulled it out of your ass.
That's like saying, "If God ('G.', wtf?) exists outside the universe, he probably eats a lot of *waffles.'
* I just said "waffles" because I've had a craving lately, but I never get to eat waffles...
Yeah, people always say that, however practice often proves different than theory. For their entire existence, the Quake engines have been far superior to any other engine no matter what language they are written in.
Interestingly, the Quake engines have also proven to be far, far more stable and portable.
Given that Carmack has consistently developed the best gaming engines, I'd say he probably knows what he's doing.
What the hell was wrong with the old themes.org, not the previous one(what a disaster), but the one before? It was beautiful, each section had it's own theme(fitting, being a theme site), and in each section there were sub-categories, adult, people, anime, games, etc..
Now it's had two overhauls and has gained absolutely nothing from this.
And where is the X resources section? Backgrounds, icons, tiles etc.?
I'm just very sad, themes.org used to be an excellent site, the best themes site ever. Now it's just... blah.;-(
There was a recent thing about this, and in response to some criticisim someone from Xiph responded and let everyone know that a standards document WILL BE RELEASED and hasn't yet BECAUSE THE STANDARD HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETELY FINALIZED, they don't even have a complete draft of it for their own use.
And of course, if you are so worried about it, you can offer to help them.
Ok, no one else seems to be complaining about this, so it must just be me, and my coworker.
What is the deal with the fonts? They are friggin ugly! I assume it's just my system, but I'm using the default XFree86 fonts. Does it simply look like crap with the default fonts?
Every other program I have looks just fine, but with OpenOffice all the fonts look terrible, the menus are nearly unreadable.
Linux is making great strides in the gaming arena. ID and Epic are still doing Linux versions, Neverwinter Knights is going to ship with Linux/Mac/Windows binaries on the same CD.
Then there's also Transgaming. Native Linux ports are always the best way to go, but for that much needed gaming fix you can use Transgaming's version of wine. You should see Max Payne run in all it's D3D(Direct ms 3D lockin) glory. Winex is pretty sweet, for games that work they actually seem to be more stable than in windows. I've played a number of games all the way through without any problems whatsoever in wine.
There's also GarageGames. There's a ton of independent developers developing games using an engine that supports Linux, so hopefully lots of them will release Linux binaries of their games.
I was not criticizing the capabilities of the Xbox! I was not criticizing the capabilities of the Xbox! I was not criticizing the capabilities of the Xbox!
Of course it's a capable gaming machine, it's a PC!
That's its strength, but it is also its weakness.
I'm not criticizing the hardware, I'm criticizing the company. They are trying to gain marketshare in the industry by selling a piece of equipment way below cost, and they are doing that because they aren't capable of developing a dedicated gaming system that can be sold cheaply, above cost.
Folks, they cannot take a loss forever. Something eventually has to give, either the hardware or the price.
Also, my criticism of their game lineup is an opinion, you may disagree. But many people are of the same opinion as myself, their lineup is not diverse enough to get the attention of a wide enough audience.
It was a shortcut, not in what it allows the machine to do, but it was a shortcut in that they didn't develop a machine that had the possibility of being profitable. Sony and Nintendo put large amounts of effort into developing their hardware, hardware which they can sell NOT AT A LOSS.
So, eventually, Microsoft will have to ship a machine that is extremely unimpressive, face it, Microsoft just isn't up to the task of actually designing their own hardware, or it will cost twice as much. Or, they will simply never make a profit from the Xbox.
Sony and Nintendo on the other hand, develop hardware customized for gaming(instead of PC in a box) that can be sold at reasonable prices and they don't have to take a loss.
First off, they don't have many good games in their lineup for the forseeable future.
They have completely failed in Japan, which is a real problem because many of the best games come from Japan.
How are they going to make money? They have put a PC in a box and are selling it at a loss, whereas Sony and Nintendo either make money or at least break even on their console sales. Microsoft took a shortcut and simply put a PC in a box, because their expertise is not in making hardware, that's simply not going to work from a business standpoint.

If what Alan said about the patents they hold is true, then nothing you said is very relevent.
Besides, it's like 2 years old or something...
Dammit peoples, what the hell is wrong with you?!
This card looks really sweet, and Linux could really use some competition to NVIDIA in the 3d card market, I hope the Linux drivers are up to par.
If they're binary only, I hope they put as much effort into them as NVIDIA does.
