FWIW this might just solve that problem

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/elegantinvention/isostick-the-optical-drive-in-a-usb-stick

There has been a lot of misconception about the functionality of isostick. All the optical disk magic takes place in the isostick itself, it doesn't matter if you're in the computer's BIOS, an OS, anything -- whatever you plug it into will see both an optical drive and a flash drive. Absolutely no software is required for this. The software mentioned is a convenience for configuring it, but all settings are ultimately stored in config files on the flash portion, which you can edit however you please. I hope this clears up some confusion about the isostick, and I hope you like it!

Some BIOSes only see the first drive a device presents, so isostick's optical drive comes first so you don't have to worry about not being able to boot from it!

this is a 2000 patent. does that mean the new filing is retro to 2000 or does it only apply going forward?

and it sounds different to me because the companies you listed work by using GPS to find your location and track movement on a map local to the device. POIs, etc, must be updated by downloading new maps/databases. I never updated the maps on my TomTom - so I know a new gas station or whatever will not show up because it was opened after the version of the map I'm using was created.

this patent uses GPS and sends it off to the internet to determne location.. presumably, that new gas station will be returned to my device - because the "map" is always current thanks to the big database in the sky.

this service MIGHT not just return POIs, but the price of gas at that gas station.. or todays lunch special at the spot around the corner. a "service" wouldn't be necessary to tell you you're on the 3000 block of Main street - vanilla GPS has been doing that for years.

With the development of the modern law, this crime has been discarded in many jurisdictions, and is generally only applied against persons placed in a special position of authority or responsibility. In this case, the offence of misfeasance in public office or malfeasance in public office may be considered instead. For example, corrections officers who stand idly by while drug trafficking occurs within the prison may be prosecuted for this crime.

HBO owns the content, but they can't even dictate how it's distributed (to non TV devices)

DirecTV got over 300k new subscribers in one quarter because of NFL Sunday Ticket. Somehow, no matter how badly the NFL wants it, i don't think you're going to see that on any other platform because of the contract with DTV. Hell, even if I did get Sunday Ticket, I still couldn't watch my local team (in their home market) because of blackout dates. what the fuck kind of rules are those (I know that's a NFL thing and not DTV)

I don't think Apple/Google/MS could pull it off even if they pooled their resources.

look at how fucked up the whole thing is. new movies for sale first, then rental (in the same god damn sotre).. some get it 30 days before anyone else.. the weirdness goes on and on. tv shows (for the most part) are not available until after they air because there's so much god damn money in advertising during prime time.
