I always thought that raising money on Slashdot to fight against Microsoft is a valid idea. Recently, however, I discovered that a large portion of the Slashdot users say that they dislike Microsoft to no end, but they are also the ones to purchase an XBox and Halo/Halo 2. I have doubts that one can raise much money on Slashdot, because only a few here truly dislikes Microsoft and sees Microsoft's negative effects on future innovation, and are willing to donate to the cause.
As a computer engineer, I can usually draw better than my peers. Unlike picking up another porgramming language, I don't think artistic talent can be learned readily, because you need an eye for colors, shapes, and style that I notice my scientific peers just do not possess.
Ever since a kid, I would try and copy styles from mecha comic books. I worked very hard when I was little to draw something as close to the original as possble. Not to sound discouraging, but I don't think it is possible to "learned to be self-sufficient" before your contract is over. What you can do, however, is follow the numerous art tutorials on the net and try your best to duplicate the Photoshop effects to something usable.
The drawings from my sketchbook are mostly redraw of original artwork by other artists. If you do decide to learn art for future uses, I think the best way to start learning art is to try duplicating a professional artist as close as possible. Once you get an eye for colors, shapes, and line distances, you should be able to realize art concepts in your head.
I think Gmail should just rename their 'labels' as 'folders', because that is what the labels really are. It's true that they don't support "folders", but "labels" are exactly like folders, except with more power. When you apply a label to an email, it is the same as sorting them into a folder. But with labels, you can sort the email into multiple folders with a single copy of the email.
Having Google as our #1 tech leader is not so bad. However, they might need more enticing names than the ones you have supplied to attract the masses. How about:
Google Winamp -> Googamp
Google OpenOffice -> Goofice
Google Firefox/Phoenix -> Goofox/Goonix (complete with gmail integration)
Google Linux -> Goonux/GSD (Sounds like sexual transmitted dieases. And we all know how well sex sells)
5 of the 10 top machines use the Power archtecture, either the Power4 or PPC family.
Coincidentally, my top machine use Microsoft Windows and it has a record of AlwaysFlops.

It is not even about how great Halo is. It is about Microsoft's proven ability to take over a market and stop innovation. Every purchase of Halo and XBox does lead to a world without video game evolution. You want evidence of this? Think IE. Does the browser war ring a bell? Do you even read Slashdot and the numerous security exploits readily available on IE?
Also, it is common knowledge that Microsoft takes a huge loss on each console. It's been posted numerous times on Slashdot, as well as many other places. Do your own research instead of asking me to spoon-feed you such common information. But perhaps such a trait causes you to loyally following Microsoft without thinking.
If you are a consumer and not a stockholder, it is absurd for you to be cheering for Microsoft. You are thinking about your "fun" in the present, but fail to recognize the effects in the future.
You call me a junior, but obviously, you are too senile to think ahead.

Please read the first reply to my post, he raises valid issues and flaws to your reasoning. It is NOT about what console innovations they are providing now. It is NOT about what a great value XBox is right now. It is about their use of such devices to buy your loyalty right now.
Once they secure a place in the market, you can be assured that they will use any means possible to destroy competition. Once the competition is gone, you will not see any innovations, and your future XBox won't be a great value.
Here is an example of what is happening now:
Microsoft saw Sony and Nintendo as competitors, so they ate the loss per console to sell "powerful hardware" for a cheap price. What do you think would happen if there are no competitors? Microsoft would NOT eat the loss per console, they will simply introduce the technology a few years later when the technology is cheap. What does this all mean? It means that there is a deterant to innovation as technology which could be offered years ago is now being introduced years later. Instead of Microsoft eating up the cost of technology, the consumers are now using old technology which could have been introduced earlier.
Instead of me "taking [my] blinders off", perhaps you should really see past what the surface entails and understand what is truly happening.

Looks like the Microsoft fanboys are marking the parent as troll even though he has his own valid opinion of the game.
Speaking of which, why are there so many people on Slashdot with XBoxes? Aren't people on here aware of Microsoft's business tactics and their inability to innovate? If so, why continue to support the company and give them more revenue to further deter innovation and slow-down technology?
Some of you say that your purchase won't matter. But to even have a collective on Slashdot giving Microsoft money, the fight for innovation is going to waste.
Since cats fall on their feet, what happens if you wrap playing cards on each of their legs? Will their happy flight downwards be interrupted by randomly flying limbs?
I went to that link to how easy it was to exploit the flaw, I moused-over the www.microsoft.com link, and noticed that www.google.com was displayed on my status bar. I was like, "WTF? How is this a flaw when I can do that in HTML?!" Then I realized that I was using Firefox. I'm so fast.
As informative as that article was, though, someone needs to hack the site and "innovate" it to fit better on a screen that is larger than the ghetto 320x240.
Now, if only we can get powers-that-be to understand the article and actually do something about the patent system and other restrictions that prevents innovations (Microsoft).
I don't think a typical Joe knows how to stumble onto Slashdot, let alone know how to post a reply and make a statement that is the exact opposite of what is true.
"the computer will alert shoppers as they approach favorite items or promotions"
Don't worry about any embarassing situations here, guys, Slashdotters will never have to worry about the alerts when the cart reaches the condom section.
Though, make sure to bring the latest soundwave-cancellation gadgets and get ready to trigger it -- in case that the cart get too close to the Twinkies section and the microcontroller gets an overflow error and starts going alert-bonkers.
Well, one good thing about this new Centaur is that it is less likely for Bush to fall off of.

Yeah, considering the lack of first-time experience, Slashdot users using sex metaphors to describe tech issues would not be very elegant.
