Doom 3 was mostly confined to small spaces and corridors. If you watched the fucking trailer you would see a lot of the fight scenes take place outside. Bigger monsters, bigger areas.
Without a doubt it will probably be a good game, but launching a console you usually want to start with something that people already know. The Xbox has built a large audience of casual gamers who really only know Halo. Perfect Dark Zero may be a great shooter, but it lacks the Halo name, and thus will probably lose some people unless Microsoft pushes it really hard.
It is an incentive if Halo 2 might have better graphics possibly because of the Xbox 360's improved hardware (it has been rumored). Also, you would get all the extra features of Xbox Live (which I assume would work with the other version).
Generally it is a pain to have to switch between consoles, unless the person has some sort of switching device. With the Xbox 360, because games for the original Xbox will still be released after it has launched it is possible that people will want to get these other games, as well as new games on the Xbox 360. Not all developers are simply going to not publish their game if they have it in the pipeline (or delay it for a new console). Thus people are able to play these newer games with more ease (without having to switch controllers, video inputs, etc...).
Backwards compatability is not an essential feature, but it is one that makes peoples lives easier, and anything that allows people to be even more lazy generally gets peoples attention.
It provides incentive for people to buy the console at launch. Currently it seems Microsoft does not have a true AAA title like Halo to launch with the Xbox 360. If people know that they can play Halo 2 (and maybe with better graphics) as well as the rest of the the Xbox's library of games they are likely to think they will be able to use their new purchase a lot more than just with the maybe 16 games that come out at the time of release. This is especially important with the Xbox 360, as supposedly the development of Xbox games is continuing past the introduction of the Xbox 360. Thus these new games (for the old system) can be utilized without having to resort to the old technology.
It is odd for a console, yes, but have you seen the Xbox 360 remote control? I think the Windows Media Center Edition button makes it obviously clear that this will not only be a game system, but a PVR and progressive scan DVD player/burner.
There is no way that is a trackball. Unless you have really long fingers there would be no way to comfortably hold the controller while using it. More than likely it is a white Xbox logo, IF this the real controller.
Microsoft is seemingly taking the Sega track for Xbox 2 however. Going from black system to white, releasing it before everyone else, and (most likely) using a disc with less capacity (Dreamcast used a GD-ROM instead of DVD). Probably other similarities as well.
Every player up to the Shuffle was a hard drive based player. Thus the only iPod that could not meet the criteria (and still be flash based) is the Shuffle.
I can't comment on other Sony products, but I havn't had a need for any external software for my Sony DSC-V1 digital camera. It just mounts it as a drive and you can drag and drop all you want. With an older Canon camera I had they didn't even mount it, and you were forced to use their crappy photo program (or other exporting programs) just to get them off.
It is really only because the Xbox is just powerful (barely) powerful enough to run a port of Doom III. Plus, it is friendly to those used to programming for PC, thus the developers figured they could squeeze some more cash out by making an Xbox version. A GameCube version might have been more difficult to make a PS2 version near impossible.
After 9/11 when Amazon starting taking donations they only made $6.8 million dollars, and that was a big thing where over 170,000 people donated. They expect Trekkies to pay more just for a show?
