    I suspect 50 years from now historians will mark the fall of the Soviet Union as also the beginning of the the end for the US.

    They causes will be blatant corruption and incompetence of the federal government, elections processes that clearly favor those with money, the federal power grab of all decision making, the lack of decision making on important issues, the transition to a surveillance culture, the ability of big business and other special interests to buy legislation, the rube goldberg tax system, the unaccountability of those in power and the abuse of the court system.

    As an IT guy there comes a point where a system is too antiquated and been kludged too much to continue throwing money at it. You have to start from scratch and use lessons learned to build a new system. Or move to another job.

    ISP won't do it for free. They are not an arm of the software police. They will rightfully expect the software companies to foot the investigative bill.

    The new DMCA has a provision for civil forfietures (if you are in the US) that would allow the feds to seize every computer component you have for posting cracks, linking to cracks, or discussing the use of cracks.

    This card is supposed to contain fingerprints as an important part of ensuring a person's ID, but as far as I know there is NO federal standard for matching/comparing fingerprints. The boondoggled Mayfield case should be proof enough that as fingerprint IDs are not ready for prime time.

    1. NASA should get out of launch vehicle operations. It's become a commodity business.
    2. NASA should sell it's stake in the ISS. It's a toy and a money sinkhole.
    3. NASA needs to focus on space based research and exploration. Leave terrestrial flight research to the Air Force, DARPA and the private industry.
    4. NASA needs to focus on robotic planetary research, astronomy related projects and deep space vehicle research.

    BTW, a manned mission to the moon or Mars is the ISS on steroids sinkhole wise.

    Who gets to decide the definition of terrorism? The government can redefine the definition as time goes on to such a broad extent that any crime could be deemed terrorism. At that point you can be incarcerated without access to legal council or even a trial because you are a terrorist. The slope is getting very slippery here.

    But if the contract says you get the phone free as long as you agree to use it only on our network I could see the courts agreeing to that. If you don't like that stipulation then buy your own phone. On the other hand, service providers should be required to offer the phone at a reasonable cost and user purchased phones should be movable from one service provider to the next.

    Wasn't there a printer cartridge refill case similar to this just weeks ago? In exchange for special pricing the buyer agreed that the cartridge would not be refilled.

    No school needs an SSN. For that matter just say no to giving it to anybody but the IRS and your financial institutions. Your doctor doesn't need it. The gas company doesn't need it. Cingular and Earthlink don't need it.
