  1. Re:Linux client? on Soldat 1.4 Released · · Score: 1

It runs (both in regular and 'video compatibility' mode, in my experience, though better in the latest), but nowhere as good as it should. Framerates sometimes drop for no particular reason, and i've had quite a few random crashes. It's a shame, as Wine can run some newer, fancier 3D games with no hitches...

  2. Re:Isn't it a little old? on Soldat 1.4 Released · · Score: 3, Interesting

I never played it, but haven't games of that type started to get obsolete around 1990, right after the Wolfenstein 3D wiped the floor with them?

Give it a try. It's better than most of the crap FPS that have been released lately, and one of the most addicting multiplayer games i've tried in years.

  3. Linux client? on Soldat 1.4 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know i might be asking for too much... but does anyone knows if this gem of a game will ever have its own linux version? I LOVE Soldat, but have mixed sucess trying to run it under Wine.

Anyway, it's well worth a go if you never tried it before. It's not mentioned anywhere in the story, so, for those who haven't tried it, it's fast paced online deathmatch game, a-la-UT... in 2D, sporting "realistic" weapons (most borrowed from Counterstrike). It's easy to play, has very low hardware requirements, and its' gameplay is devastatingly addictive. That, and you can't beat bots that lay Arnie movie quotes every time they frag you :)

Oh, for fucks' sake. The guy was a complete dick, but he is FAR from the worst that humanity has seen, as one might tend to beleive by the reactions shown here. This is not April 1945. And please, before you turn this into another "freedom of the masses" discussion, i'll repeat: all the guy did was restricting the way you're able to see movies. Read your local newspaper and check for yourself if there aren't bigger evils in this world.

Anyway, i'm interested in how they plan to fit the Spiderman story into a Broadway musical... it's a comic book after all, and i don't know how well that could work without Spidey jumping arround and shooting spiderwebs arround the stage.

Eventually, as it always happens, there will be bug releases and new drivers for Windows Vista. Upgrading to them is as easily as doing "Windows Update." Linux (and BSD) distros will never be this easily patched due to the very nature of being open source. I only have to go to 1 web site to update my PC's - Windows Update - and it's incredibly simple - just click on Update and voila, it's done and everything works.

Are you kidding? One of the biggest perks of both BSD and Linux is the painless it is to keep both your OS *AND* your apps updated. All modern distros make this extremely easy - a single command or a click on a button. Windows Update is actually very nice, but unless it patches your OS and updates all your apps (including the ones not by Microsoft), you're comparing apples and oranges.

Serenity is a good movie, and i think their producers did a fine job of keeping the storyline as independent of the original series, Firefly, as possible. Having said that, yes, i felt the same as you did - it's too convoluted of a story. Sadly enough, a lot of things in the movie simply won't make much sense without having watched the series.

Now, let me give you some advice. If you wanted to like Serenity but felt it was lacking character developement and plot, i suggest you give the Firefly DVD boxset a try. Hell, just buy it. The movie is OK, but the series were mindblowing, IMHO, and some of the finest blend of sci-fi and adventure i witnesed on TV in quite a while. I know a lot of people who didn't think much about the movie but fell in love with the series after watching a few episodes.

I see this all the time from developers that grow too acostumed to languages like Java and .ASP - which are fine too, but each have their place. You would never develop a web applet in C (if you even could), just as you would never develop a goddamn hypervisor in Java. Grow up.
