Come on, he has a point - and yes, podcasts are not streamed but they are audio files online! That they're syndicated via RSS is of little consequence; you could deliver it the same with a plain vanilla web page.

I just don't get the craze over podcasts.

He was talking about developers. These days games seem to be all about graphics (sadly enough), but all the amazing graphics this technology has to deliver are of no use for game developers if they can't work with it. High profile engines like D3 and Unreal offer a full developement framework which makes development easier (and cheaper), covering pretty much everything a game developer could need. Including graphics.

As for the sneak preview video itself... wow. It is mindblowing, and the motion blur effect alone makes the graphics much better. Still, i'd like to know what kind of hardware rendered that in realtime. And yes, for all we know, this is nothing more than a tech demo. An amazing tech demo, yes, but i've seen a lot of amazing tech demos elsewhere... i'll reserve judgment until the game is out.

Mmm good point, it eluded me completely (maybe it's because of my disgust for podcasts to begin with :).

Still, RSS is overdoing it: even while it might be well suited to the task, the idea behind RSS is that you recive updated information about something as soon as it's avaliable while using as little bandwidth as possible. I've seen a lot of sites, like the op mentioned, that miss the point completely: either they deliver a lot of data through it or very brief headline-like updates, which most of the time doesn't cut it.

Delivering links through RSS for FTP/WWW downloads would be a better way of Podcasting, but i doubt it'd ever catch on.

Well, it's not that RSS doesn't have a point (it does), it just gets awfully misused. Take podcasts, for example; why bother setting up an RSS/Atom feed with mp3 files when you could do it as easily with a simple web page?

Also, as another member of the Rest Of The World, I disagree with your analysis of US foreign involvement's part in the current batch of terrorist ideologies.

Thing is, the US presented its' foreign involvement in the Middle East (Iraq, particularly) as a war on terror... and as a liberation crusade... and a hunt for evil WMD, whichever was more convenient at the time. Again, this is my opinion - but one i seem to share with a lot of non-US residents: the US current foreign policies have nothing to do with the so-called "War on terror", and this is specially true in the Middle East.

  9. Re:9/11 changed everything.. on FCC To Require Backdoor Network Access for Feds · · Score: 2, Interesting

Anyone who believes that "terrorists want to take away Americans' freedoms" is deluding themselves.

Indeed, they just wish to create fear as a deterreent. The sad part is that the US finds that limiting personal freedoms is a viable way to combat terrorism. It just doesn't work. There's a lot of European countries that suffered terrorism for much longer and never resorted to such measures.

They likely just interpret our foreign involvement as bullying and wish us to stop.

Actually, the rest of the world feels that the US foreign involvement has little to do with terrorism. I should know, i'm part of them :)

Not to rain on your parade, but check the definition of terrorist: it's well accepted that a terrorist is someone who employs terror as a political weapon.

The more the US resorts to giving up freedoms in order to "combat" terrorism, the more terrorists win. It's simple, sadly enough.

Yes, FUN. The levels were so well designed... i only had that much fun when i played Doom 2, and then again, i felt like i've already seen it all. Doom was just a riot to play. And if you did multiplayer? Nirvana. It defined the term "FPS" (yes, even more than Wolfenstein 3D), and no one did it best ever since. Not even iD.

  20. Re:DRM on Mac OS X Intel Kernel Uses DRM · · Score: 1

I beleive that Apples' move to x86 happened because a number of different reasons, all of them debatable. What's important is that, once they decided to do the switch, they chose the x86 implementation that suit them best.
In that context, you can bet that Intel having a DRM roadmap clearly laid out (and already unveiling, back to the hatred CPUID incident which still exists on Pentium CPUs), was a major point in favor of Intel on Apples' eyes.

I never bought that AMDs' lower production capabilities were the reason Apple chose Intel. See, it doesn't matter if AMD offers better performing CPUs, with better technology, or with lower power consumption. Hell, it doesn't even matter if they're cheaper. What matters is that Intel makes easier for Apple to lock down the software to their hardware and, as you said, move DRM to a hardware level. This is essential for Apple, whose primary buissnes was always selling computers as a whole; a tightly integrated hardware/software solution for people who want their systems to just work. You can say anything about Apple, but even Apple haters agree that when you buy an Apple computer, it works. No hassles, no configuration nightmares, etc. They don't want OSX to become the new Windows. Controlling media with hardware DRM is just the cherry on top.
