Interesting point of view. There seems to be a pretty major propaganda war going on over Russia and Ukraine, and I wonder which parts are truth...

We get a lot of donated machines where I work and one of the standard desktop power cords actually did burn itself in two. Luckily it didn't cause a fire. Your story about a contractor substituting substandard materials reminds me of a documentary on the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. Turns out one of the contractors was sneaking in substandard steel wires that were woven together for the support cables. I believe that wire is still in there.

As another data point, I was once loading the bed of a '74 Chevy pickup (which had a 454 and 3.73 gears) with gravel and put on the emergency brake. I then proceeded to drive to my friends house with the emergency brake still on and didn't even know it. Those breaks smoked for about 20 minutes after we got there.

The biggest problem is the curvature of the wheels is concentrating all of the weight of the vehicle on the center of the wheel, and not only that, but with the tread design, all the force is concentrated on a spot about 2 square millimeters. They just need to add a rib going down the middle like bicycle tires.

While you have a point, it is probably a good thing that we all have different viewpoints and opinions. Imagine how boring a society we'd have if we were all identical. Do you also consider 9/11 jokes to be so bad as to be unutterable? Do you consider every joke to be unutterable?

I actually have the same point of view as to racial jokes and use of the n-word. I consider use of that word to be a sign of that person's character and in poor taste. Perhaps this is because the child abuse is a largely foreign concept to my experiences -- I'm sure a therapist would see things differently.

  16. Re:Pretending to do work is fraud on What Do You Do When Your Mind-Numbing IT Job Should Be Automated? · · Score: 1

    Is that accurate?

If you can automate a task which saves time then you should go seek out a new task to fill the time. You are not paid to sit on your ass and admire your handiwork. There is a difference between making yourself more efficient at your job so that more gets done and pretending to do work that you have automated to collect a paycheck. The former is worthy of promotion, the later is fraud.

So you are actively discouraging your employees from ever doing anything to improve quality of life or even improve accuracy. Interesting.
