I'm good with that. It's been Longhorn for years now, I think calling it Vista will confuse people.

I was all in favour of calling XP "Whistler" (Its working name for those of you who don't know)

Sounds perfectly fair to me. Linux applications often have very specific version dependencies, why not software you have to pay for?

I don't expect to be able to run OO.o on Slackware 1.0 out-of-the-box, and I don't expect IE7 to have to run on old software either.

It's nothing to do with Islam, it's a small group of people who *think* it's Islam.

The American approach of "All those paki towel heads are terrorist scum, lock them up!" doesn't work. The UK has laws for arresting and detaining terrorist suspects without shipping them to another country and depriving them of basic human rights.

I disagree. Frequently I recieve many spams from one person, they're otherwise called chain mails.

Also, one person sending to many? Ever heard of mailing lists? There are some places, such as many organisations, where you *need* to email several people at once.

The main problem is that the system would need to ensure that there were always at least 2 copies, even if one dropped offline. Having each copy query its 'partner' every minute for update status is a hell of a lot of traffic, never mind trying to find an open replica server and replicating the data should its partner go offline.

We were subjected to non-stop coverage of the Twin Towers, all the videos, and the aftermath. The world does not become a wind-blasted desert outside of the USA, we do have news. And I still oppose Guantanamo.

I had to watch the news as the UK's capital city, London, was bombed. My home country's capital. And I still don't think a Guantanamo-like solution would help.

I'd personally say partially right and partially wrong. A lot of the reason for going Windows is the software, but an equal amount is the fact that software for Windows just works. Software for Linux, on the other hand, frequently needs recompiling for minor differences between distros.

Standards are essential. Microsoft has them, Apple has even more. Linux has very few, not for UI, data transfer, or even where to store the damn config files.

Why did the telephone system lose backup power?

AFAIK if you don't keep up payments, they will cut your line to everything including emergency numbers. This is unlike the mobile network, where (in the UK at least) handsets and operators must make every attemt to connect emergency calls even if it's a handset with no SIM card. It will just grab the strongest signal it can and demand emergency carrier access.

In short, if you don't pay your line rental they are allowed to cut you off.
