    and this is the one which confuses Windows users thinking of switching. Ctrl-click is multiple select, Cmd-click should be for context menu (much like WinKey on MS keyboards is used for context functions.

    With BitTorrent it's difficult to do this, because unless you upload (and peers report packets coming from you to the tracker) then your download speed is gonna suck. Leave your client uploading freely and your download rate will get fast quickly, but block uploads and it will stay slow.

    It's possible to write an application to shut down your system, and I know you can get software controlled power supplies (X10 for example), so surely you could tie them together somehow.

    Funny seeing this - only this morning I was looking at (well, for) systems (yes, IPv6) which I could stick into my network and let me remotely control all manner of devices. Screw X10, I want my coffee machine to have its own IP, maybe even a working implementation of HTCPCP.

    Anyone bumped into devices like this? I'm not looking forward to having to design my own embedded linux lightswitch.

    Depends on the infliction. "Troll, my ass" I think makes them sound as two completely seperate terms, whereas "Troll my ass" (with each word pronounced as hard) makes it sound right. "Troll my ass" with only "Troll" as the hard word makes it a verb, and I don't want my ass trolling thanks :P

    Can someone step me through getting an IMAP server running on my network, and moving existing mails to it?

    Assume I have Linux or Windows boxes available (Would prefer Windows, yeah blah blah but other people don't like me 'wasting' hardware on *nix), and I use Outlook for my primary mail client.

    Apparently my computer is not only broadcasting an IP address, but is also broadcasting data about my browser!

    According to various sites I'm running IE 3.0 (I'm running Firefox), my resolution is 640x480 (It's 1600x1200) and I only have 32mb of RAM (2gb). And they can sell me some software to fix it.

    I would say it depends on how the phones work. If all they are is a basic kernel with the companies own proprietary binaries on top, then there's nothing the company has to distribute. The kernel is available, it's their own binaries which make it special.

    Remember - as long as it's not a modification of or using parts of GPL code, then you can do what you like with it.

    IIRC the Google grid is mostly incapable of general computing, for reasons such as memory being allocated in 64mb blocks.

    Not to play devil's advocate here, but is there any use in irreversibly encrypting your chats? I presume the person at the other end would enjoy being able to decrypt and read your message. Unless of course you happen to enjoy sending people non-reversible hashes.

    Sorry, but just because you're a DoD contractor doesn't mean that there aren't hundreds of thousands of other businesses needing to test patches before deployment.

    I must say, in defence of the journalists, certain bodies (Such as the BBC in the UK - most of you should have BBC World Service available) do actually have very little bias, have survived intact through wars and more, and pride themselves in getting it right. BBC News is always perfectly on time, well presented, as far as I can tell keeping to the facts (maybe slight hyperbole but never blatent lying), and they almost certainly will have major news issues backed up by an in-depth study looking at both sides.

    In this case your friend is the manual. I've found that a quick flick through a decent manual (PHP has a very nice Windows help file, sorry *nix people) solves most things, especially if you have a feeling the language should do it built in.

    I would rather have the quality on the iPod (which plays music, and plays it well) than poor quality MP3 player, FM radio, voice recorder, memo taker, keyboard synth and kitchen sink.

    Are you aware thta to change the volume, you simply skim your finger around the wheel whilst in 'Now Playing' (i.e. the normal whilst listening) mode? Likewise to scrub the track you click the centre button and skim your finger round the wheel?

    I can only agree here - a jellymouse (pointer stick, whatever) is so much nicer than a touchpad. I found it more accurate, easier, a lot more tactile, and it meant I could mouse around without moving my fingertips far.

    Update.

    A lot of the 'OMG I L0ST FR4MR3ATZ!!!!" was due to people going "Oh, a major Windows update" then actually looking for anything, however minor, to allow them to say "XPSP2 SUCZ DONT INST4LL LOLZ!!!!11!".

    For all of the 2fps an additional buffer check will cost, it's worth it.

    Sorry if I didn't make it clear - the sinks are finned copper. I agree with you that bolting lumps of metal onto the side to 'aid cooling' do nothing and block airflow, but I found that finned copper helped transfer heat faster than just straight airflow (the disk caddy is in the way of getting a direct fan over them.

    Each to their own I guess.
