Nobody has ever pretended that - everybody knows that PCs are the expensive option, and that consoles are the cheaper option. Why would anybody buy a console if this weren't the case?

You may be right that Microsoft is nor more unethical than other software companies, but this is irrelevant. Microsoft has so much power, that is the problem. They can be as unethical as they want, but if they happen to control the OS and Office market, we have a problem.

I also do not believe that Microsoft produces Office for Apple to avoid the courts - they do it because it is profitable for them, it helped cement Office as the suite, and it gives them some leverage over apple.

  4. Re:Will they never learn? on PS3 Performance Downgraded Again · · Score: 1

Wow, how many things can you get wrong.

The thing about it is that Sony will downgrade their hardware as often as they want and STILL we will hear trash talk from the Execs and higher-ups about how their hardware is going to outperform and outsell the other consoles.

Sony is producing the most powerful console, not many people will disagree with that. That means that they can reduce the hardware specs, and it is still the most powerful console, and will outperform the other consoles on the market, as long as they don't reduce it too far. And it is not unreasonable for the execs to talk up their console, and talk about how it will outsell all the other consoles (just as all execs do) - i don't see why you have such a problem with this.

And they'll back up this arrogance by not moving their price point an inch. Sony seems to think that the PS2 success will drive PS3 sales.

What a stupid statement is that? Whatever you say about Sony, it is obvious to everybody that they are trying to produce a fantastic console - it will have a Great CPU, GPU and blu-ray. The reason it is so expensive is because they are trying to put so much stuff in there. Whether or not this is a good strategy (which it doesn't seem to be at this stage), we will have to wait.

Maybe Sony have a longer term strategy - The PS2 is still a great seller, and they make a lot of money from the games. Perhaps they never intended the PS3 to be a big seller from the start - rather a year or two down the line, when parts are cheaper, they will reduce the price.

No, not you. But there is a chance, a really small chance, that they wrote this for someone other than you. Everybody else in fact.

Sure, you can have another dig at Microsoft. Vista is an expensive operating system, and they know that not many people will buy it outright. You need new hardware to run it at its full glory anyway, so it is almost a joke selling it like this. This is more to change the perception of people. If they sell it in a box for $399, then people will perceive it having a high value. Then, when they go to buy there new machines for $700, it won't seem so bad. And they have this high value OS, instead of the cheap and nasty Linux.

This can only be a good thing for Linux, as the more expensive the cost of Vista, the more people who will consider another option.

It is easier to get outside help than realise what you will need in the long term, and start hiring people. Oh, but when you need a new secretary, that gets done within the week.
