  1. Re:Sarbanes-Oxley on All GeForce 8 Graphics Cards to Gain PhysX Support · · Score: 1

Wasn't intended as flamebait. Adding PhysX capabilities to existing products could be seen as adding functionality that people would otherwise have paid for. I mentioned Apple simply because it's the only high-profile example of a company using this rationale for charging for an update. I meant nothing against Apple in general.

  2. Sarbanes-Oxley on All GeForce 8 Graphics Cards to Gain PhysX Support · · Score: 0, Flamebait

I wonder if we'll see Sarbanes-Oxley invoked here? If not, it will be a significant dent in the legitimacy of Apple's software update charge war-cry.

Ear buds' main benefit is convenience. Their quality is usually bearable-at-best, but when I'm travelling I prefer to be able to wrap my headphones round my ipod and fling the device in my bag when it's not being used. Beefier headphones are the way to go when I'm at home.

As for the other point about cost... rolled into that $30 price is R&D (ok, so they're not exactly reinventing the wheel, but some work has to be done here), technical testing, user testing, getting the product certified for sale, advertising, packaging.

In the short to medium term, insurgents will not be able to procure, much less manufacture, reflective munitions. Creating a chrome mortar while preserving its aerodynamics and explosive effectiveness would require more than end-user modification to existing products.

Another poster said that destroying the laser would be as simple as using countermeasures and calculating its location by following the beam. This may be true, but it would add a tactical element to attacking a coalition base- far from the fire-and-run-away method employed today. Since the laser is truck mounted, I wonder if it can move while firing.

I find social networking (in my case using Bebo) to be an excellent way of keeping in touch with casual acquaintences, like people I work beside, friends who have moved away or general people I don't really have a need to phone. Some people treat friends like Pokemon cards, and the sites certainly encourage this. When you log in to Bebo you're presented with an 'Updates' page which shows the latest developments in your contacts' social arms race- a list of who's added who to their friends list. However, I'm content to just use it as a way to keep in touch with my colleagues. Cheaper than a text message too.

  13. Kind of understandable. on Permit May Be Required For Public Photography in NYC · · Score: 2, Insightful

I can definitely see the danger in overzealous enforcement of this law, and as someone has already mentioned, there's a precedent for law enforcement to use any reason to curb photographic rights. If the law is properly limited, however, it could limit the nuisance caused by groups using tripods which can occupy busy public spaces for long periods of time. I can understand the motivation behind this law, even if it is a mere pretext to banning public photography in the long term.

The DX10 situation was obvious from the beginning. DX10 support would be Windows Vista only, and it would be a while before Vista had the marketshare to justify widespread DX10 game development. Most early adopters found this out in their research, and accepted the 8800 for the benefits it brings to DX9 games, or didn't buy the card at all.
