These are very good points. Along with this, I will point out one area where WoW really has been revolutionary: the UI. If WoW got one thing gloriously right, it was their very moddable and customizable user interface via a LUA scripting system. I hope this catches on in future game's of a variety of genres, not just MMO's, because it really allows you remove the largest barrier in enjoying button-heavy and information spamming games.
I think you're sensationalizing the situation. Wikipedia's take on the this is that it was first created in or before 1999 by developers at Creative. They filed for a patent in 1999 which was granted in 2002. John Carmack independently came up with this idea in early 2000 and presented this at various conferences and such later, thereby not constituting prior art.
I have no problems in FF2 (currently 2.04 with TMP and ABP installed). I've been using Discussion 2.0 for a while and Opera 9 is the only browser I've seen slowness with (IE6,7 and FF1.5, 2.0 all fine for me).
Ive' noticed that Discussion2 tends to make Opera 9 chug on large comment pages (usally past 200 I have this problem as well. It is horridly slow on any popular story to the point where it takes 4-5 seconds for the browser to respond to a PageDwn. Often times expanding
a minimized comment will seem to time out. I switched back to FF2 and it's silky smooth.
These are some of the people with the most recognizable voices in the last 25 years of music. They are also some of the worst offenders of bad covers in GH. Don't know how this makes them easy to cover. Regardless, the fact that you don't like them doesn't detract from my point.
Well yea, and the horrrrrible "As made famous by"s in GH1 & 2 made some great songs really hard to enjoy. Seriously, if it's not Ozzy, Cobain, de la Roca or Weiland the song is just going to sound foreign.
But the distinct lack of really great songs as well as tons of "As made famous by..." really put me off. I suppose I can wait for GH3 for the Wii and hope the track list stays as top notch as the songs released already.
The yellow pages may have made a decent primary reference. However it may have been a bit of a stretch to knock out all the claims under a "obvious"-type rejection based on it. Specifically:
5. The system of claim 1, wherein said hierarchy has a structure comprising plural geographical levels into which the geographical areas are geographically categorized by size to provide a low level, one or more intermediate levels and a high level, each of the geographical levels above the lowest level encompassing a plurality of lower level geographical areas.
Also, depending on what kind of case law existed back then, you may have had a hard time arguing the obviousness of the computer/network system and device claims. This isn't as much a cut-and-dry issue as the one-click patent in my opinion.
Not when they have so much to gain through widespread adoption of their browser. Apple released Safari multiplatform so developers would be more confident developing with Safari support in mind. Undermining MS isn't worth the potential loss of revenue this move could bring in.

Adding claims generally DECREASES the scope of your patent, it does not increase it. The claims that discuss contacting a user make the patent more limited in its legal coverage. It is often the case that as prosecution continues on an application, claims are added or modified to decrease the scope of your claims and allow your patent to become allowable.
The way the patent system is set up, it doesn't have to be a good idea to be a patentable idea. The two are not synonymous.

As you can see the pricing structure, especially in Asia, is very fluid. They're pulling in a lot of cash, but not nearly as much as you calculated.
More likely, it will feature numerous Chuck Norris jokes intermixed with linking [Foror's Compendium of Dragonslaying].
I don't know, but that's pretty improbable.

That makes that little kid from Temple of Doom... 36?!?

This, in turn, poses a whole new breed of questions. Can one number be more odd than another odd number?
/. should just put an RSS feed to newly issued patents on the front page. Would cut down on the number of stories per day though.

if you didn't call me a tool. Thanks.

It doesn't have to. However, if it does you will have a statutory bar on their application, preventing them from swearing behind your reference.
1999 doesn't matter. You will have to look on or before Jan. 31, 1996.

You can always request reexamination of an issued patent.
