Quick google says that Mir is GPL V3 What exactly is the issue here? I'm missing something...
I think the main reason comes down to binary drivers. Neither Nvidia nor ATI have ever released enough specs for a fully capable (ie, respectable 3d support, hardware video decoding, etc) OSS driver to be written. If you actually want to use your video card to its potential you have to use binary drivers.
Having two competing display servers makes the environment more varied and makes the video card makers less likely to support either (whereas a single option would be more likely to be supported).
That said, the hardware companies seem to be fairly committed to Wayland over Mir, so I'm guessing that eventually thats what will eventually end up on top.
You seem to live under the assumption that all parents happily co-mingle. Generally we're talking about people who are no longer together for some specific reason. Occasionally they get along, but its quite common that the parents can't stand each other and allow visitation only because its court mandated.
You can bet that in those cases if the non-custodial parent just "drops by" they're going to be told to leave.
Visitation rights are generally scheduled. They're not "drop by whenever you feel like it" options.
If you show up to the mother's house at a random time and don't leave if asked to its trespassing - and yes the cops will show up with guns if called. A restraining order simply means that you're in trouble as soon as you show up, but without one you still aren't allowed to show up and stay if you're asked to leave.
I'm no global warming denier, but at this point I think there's a simple harsh reality to accept: it doesn't matter how efficient we make things that run on fossil fuels, we're going to burn them all. At best with all of our "green initiatives" we might spread out burning those fuels over an extra few decades - a century at best, but over geologic timescales any delay we induce is pretty meaningless. Every bit of it is going to be burnt and released into the atmosphere.
Once they're all gone, THEN we'll be forced to adopt new more clean sources of energy. We just have to pray that by the time all the fossil fuels are burnt the planet isn't screwed up beyond any hope of recovery (ie, still habitable).
Indeed. I'm just wondering how long until we get to Gnome 5.0 where they decide to remove the on-screen UI. Trust us guys, audio-only is the way to go. If you don't like it you're just being obtuse.
And I'd hope that anyone who backs a project like is capable of recognizing that $500,000 is not enough to build a game like this.
When a contractor fails to deliver whats promised within budget then its a failure on the contractor for adequating estimating the cost involved.
Its part of their job to either up the bid amount, or to scale back the scope of work. I have no sympathy for them if they take the money saying "Yep, we can do it!" and when the project goes over budget they think YOU should have known that that wasn't enough money.
Playing with an iPod and computer outside really isn't the point. Probably need even a good tradeoff as all they're getting now is a sunburn while they play on the device.
The point of being outside is EXERCISE. You know, physical activity - running and playing?
True, but there are multiple companies working on these things. If one doesn't have a drug on the market then they're not benefitting from the other companies making money and it WOULD work better for them to develop a cure.
Also, take note that this isn't a straight-up cure - its a vaccination. Think about that for a second - its expanding the market. If you're marketting a cure, or even just treatments, then you're only selling your drug to people that actually have the disease. A vaccination gets taken even by people who DON'T. Why sell your AIDS treatment to the tiny bit of the population that actually has AIDS you you can sell your vaccination to the entire population instead?
Zimmerman pursued Martin - douchy, but not illegal. Zimmerman has a concealed carry permit - carrying the weapon was also legal.
Martin doesn't have the legal right to "fight back" against someone who is not committing a crime. That's just called assault, and at that point Martin was the one breaking the law and threatening another person's life.
It was then, and only then, that Zimmerman had the right - again, legally - the defend his life with the gun that he specifically and legally carries for that purpose.
Bottom line, Zimmerman acted like and asshole, but Martin was the one that broke the law. The fact agree with this, but more importantly the court agreed with this.
My fishing boat cost me $12k (which is actually a fairly cheap boat) and I have no qualms calling it a toy. I have a pilots license and the airplanes I fly (real honest to goodness planes - not RC) are pretty much toys too.
Pretty much anything that is used for recreation or fun rather than for actual work can be considered a toy - it really has nothing to do with price.
"The only difference between men and boys are the price of their toys."
Don't be so sensitive on the terminology. Any recreational device can be considered a toy. Some "toys" are quite expensive, and some can be quite deadly if used improperly and require caution and respect, but they're still basically adult toys.
Personally I'm not sure which I'll get early-on (not getting either immediately though). I'm mostly an Xbox 360 player for current gen, though I'm considering buying a PS3 just to play "The Last of Us" (really wish PS4 was backwards compatible as I'd just wait and buy it instead).
Admittedly though, with a few rare exceptions there's not enough exclusive games anymore to care which or the other I get.
We do a lot to make the roads safer, but the bottom line is that when you operate a large metal contraption at speeds often in the 50-80 mph range there will always be a chance that SOMETHING will go wrong.
One of the main problems we have today is assuming that every problem has a complete solution, when most do not. You do the best you can with what you have.
I've long been a proponent of the idea that there would be far less misunderstandings if it were renamed to "Computational Science". The discipline is the study of how to sequentially break down and solve problems. That we do so with these electronic devices we've so named "computers" is kinda tangential.
I've since switched to XFCE since Gnome went batshit crazy, but if I had to choose between the major DE's KDE ain't half bad. I used to use KDE 2.x way back in the day and switched away from it when KDE 3.0 came out (though I still install it and try it out every now and then), but recently developments have proven that while I don't like the direction KDE took, it certainly could be a lot worse.
Your question is already answered. Very few consumers actually do go with Linux - probably a much lower percentage over overall desktop users compared to tablet Windows users.
Linux is used in server environments but it is just as established as Microsoft there so the comparison isn't valid.
Apple is what it always has been - a completely closed platform with hardware and software from the same source. No problem there for those that want that.
The alternative is to buy your tablet from one of many different companies that make them. That's the same as it always was, but now Google provides that OS rather than Microsoft.
Why would a company or a consumer go with Microsoft when Android already works well and is established in the market?

You can tell the government is involved when an operation that happened a week late due to a "software data glitch" went "flawlessly".

SteamOS means millions of new users
Potentially, sure.
that care about open source software
You're incredibly naive if you believe that bit.
They have succeeded in driving me away to XFCE, which is actually quite good and does everything I need.
Except proper compositing and Thunar for some reason won't give a properties dialog if you have multiple folders selected.
Still, I just use Mutter for my WM/compositor and for the most part XFCE does its job. It's unquestionably the lesser of two evils compared to Gnome.
Indeed. I'm just wondering how long until we get to Gnome 5.0 where they decide to remove the on-screen UI. Trust us guys, audio-only is the way to go. If you don't like it you're just being obtuse.
Gnome is quickly approaching a point where all they have are new users. Nobody who knows better will mess with that abomination.

A lot of people will probably get both.

And yes, it is possible to decompile the code, and it has been done in the past.
Awesome. With any luck they'll get an alternative client working. Shouldn't be too hard to set it up as a plugin to Microsoft Excel.
Actually the last Microsoft sales rep that visited us as of ~3 months ago was carrying an iPhone.

Yeah, I have to agree. I was expecting something elaborate. This could have been just as useful as a shared Google doc spreadsheet of data.
Given the current state of society as long as he insists it's one sentence then we all must agree that it is so.
