I came to Slashdot specifically to read about it because I wanted to among friends that would pay their respect to Jobs from the point of view of geeks/nerds. So, yea I think this is exactly what Slashdot is here for and I would have felt an emptiness had it not been here. I am all broken up about his passing. No, I didn't know him personally, but I do want pay may respect to his obvious contributions to our lives and our community.

  3. Make default random on Why Google Needs Firefox · · Score: 1

Wouldn't it make sense for Firefox to be search engine agnostic and implement a random choice for the default. They would still collect their royalties, but they would prevent putting all their eggs into one basket and building up either Bing or Google too much. It benefits them to ensure that both Bing and Google and any other decent search engine does well so that there is competition, because once there is not competition they can more easily target by either Google or Microsoft and lose market share.

I read practically every response here on Slashdot as well as the ones posted by everyone on the article itself. Everyone knows the article is crap, and shoots so many holes in that its not even worthy to be listed here on Slashdot. I'm not one to make direct personal attacks and like to give people the benefit of the doubt but whoever posted this article should have known this article is without technical merit, or they were just asleep at the helm. Either way they should apologize and remove the article from rotation.

I've been wanting to actually patent the idea of patenting things that were so obvious that I could then sue everyone that infringed upon my patent...that way I could sue all these patent holding companies.

Sometimes I wish Slashdot user interaction was more democratic like digg so that request like this could rise to the top and slashot staffer would be more likely to hear the responses that the majority of the readers thought was important. This isn't the first story which begs for sometime of editorial review or retraction just to ensure the integrity of slashdot. But instead we just shout into the obvilion with little hope for action because comments like these get buried in the noise.

I agree, and further more I wish /. would develop some policy of printing retractions to stories that turn out to be bogus. I plan on tuning back in tomorrow to see how things develop but I don't want to have to sift through all the esoteric and inaccurate discussions that arise for any given story, interesting as they may be, to find out "truth".

Here's my suggestion for if a article ends up being fabricated: Post a retraction at the top of the article, or even remove the original article and create a new entry/article about how you discovered the original one was a fake.

Check out www.opendns.org. All you have to do is configure your router to their DNS servers and then you can set the filters accordingly and all your devices will be protected. Best of all its free!! I was recently working for a startup (www.clearaccess.com) that actually is running custom software in the router that allows user's to set content policies per computer. This also allowed users to set timer controls, and few other features but you'd have to buy one of their routers to use this.

Sure their interface is a little rough and the music and photo stuff is a little buggy but for wireless streaming its awesome. There was originally some plans for plugins but that has since got dropped. Unfortantely it doesn't appear that linktheater has caught on but why all the hype with this inferior Apple product that took about 2 years to come out after them. I guess that is why Apple can maintain its proprietary way of doing everything -- they have a loyal fan base. Don't get me wrong for the most part Apple products are superior, but they are still proprietary in nature.

I know some other products like linksys and others have the ability but you have to manually say what sites to block etc... Our solution hooks up with an existing content filtering service that allows you to set different levels per device. So the WII could get the kidz only level while your latpop could get the Parent level. Anti-Phishing is included.
The solution is control the choke point which is generally is wireless gateway in most homes.
