  1. Re:"small government" on Creative Capitalism Gets Microsoft $528M Tax Break · · Score: 1

Hey come on now, I didn't make any kind of judgment on ACLU or that decision, it was not my intent to get into a debate as to whether the government should or should not involuntarily hold crazy people that haven't committed a crime. My point was that the homeless "problem" has nothing to do with economics.

P.S. Man, I gotta get me a second account to mod myself up like that. That sure would be handy.

P.P.S The above was merely my paranoid delusion.

P.P.P.S On second thought, I am in favor of that ACLU decision.

  2. Re:Least bad choice? on Best Presidential Candidate, Republicans · · Score: 1

I disagree entirely. Republicans win when they speak and act conservative. They get adored by the media when they demagogue and moderatize, but they end up losing general elections. Just look at the 2006 elections -- moderate/liberal republicans lost to moderate/conservative democrats, giving control of congress to the loony democrats. Bush Sr. lost a huge amount of votes to the libertarian Perot, and of course there's the model conservative Reagen who won by landslides.

The media likes McCain because he is liberal, and the media is generally liberal. That is why they are propping him up. But here's the key point -- liberals won't vote for a liberal republican, they are going to vote democrat regardless. The only thing being moderate does is piss off the republican base and cause them to vote for third parties (or not at all).

If Hillary wins the primary, I will vote against her no matter who the republican candidate is, because Hillary is a power-hungry crook. But if it was McCain vs Obama, I'd probably vote third party, or maybe even for Obama. The reasoning here is that if we are consigned to have a liberal in the white house that will ruin the economy, better it be a democrat so that we can at least clean up the mess 4 years later. I don't think McCain would win against Obama anyway, he can't out-liberal him and he's not at all conservative enough to bring out his base. The only chance republicans have at this point is Romney.

No, it's not. Thats a common Reagan-bashing mantra that has been disproven many times over.

Homeless crazy people on the streets are due to an ACLU lawsuit barring the involuntary holding of adults in mental institutions, even though such people were unable to fend for themselves.

When that particular lottery drawing was in the news I came up with a conjecture about picking lottery numbers that would have a higher probability of winning. I'm not a statistician, but from my limited knowledge of Bayesian statistics I figured I could take the set of all possible picks, then from this list remove "subjectively unlikely" combinations such as all previous winning picks as well as combinations like all straits (1-2-3-4-5), flushes (10-10-10-10-10), and other weird coincidences (all primes, etc). Then pick a few random numbers from this reduced list. I never did any actual calculations but I'm curious as to whether 1) this would actually increase your odds of winning and 2) by how much.

Well the Chernobyl disaster happened because of two major things: a) a poorly designed reactor that was unstable by nature and b) reactor operators that violated procedures and created an unsafe configuration. TMI happened because of two different things: a) a defective valve that other nuclear plants had problems with and knew was finicky but more importantly b) poorly trainer reactor operators that took actions which damaged the reactor core because of their lack of understanding about the plant. None of these four factors apply to university research reactors. The reactors are INHERENTLY safe, meaning that because of the way they are configured and designed, there is no possible way, either by operator intervention or equipment failure, that they could be seriously damaged. Actually no it would not really be possible to remove the fuel rods for nefarious purposes. They are so radioactive that you would die within seconds of contact with them. They require specialized equipment to handle, e.g. cranes, specialized containers that weigh tens to hundreds of tons, etc. You couldn't do this unnoticed, and the time it would take to do it would be plenty of time for the SWAT team, national guard, etc to show up.

The worst thing that a terrorist could feasibly do would be to irradiate some other material using the reactor, and then make a dirty bomb with that material. But then again, you could just steal material from a hospital or something which would be easier. And this type of low and medium level waste isn't particularly dangerous when spread out in tiny bits.

    By the way, IAANE.

I watched that series and found it mostly informative. The parts explaining the basics of banking and how our debt money system came to be is accurate I think. However, his conclusions about exponential growth being unsustainable and citing a need to control natural resources and population growth sounded like socialist FUD to me. I agree that having immensely powerful bank CEO's using their influence to manipulate society (e.g. not lending money to a auto manufacturer that wants to build an electric car, or something like that) would be bad, but whether that sort of thing really goes on starts to get into kook conspiracy theory territory. Also, his call for an end to all interest on loans, saying usury was immoral, and suggesting making the government the sole lender of money sounded like communist tripe to me as well. At least he didn't get totally whacky and start blaming the Jews or the Freemasons or something.

I would like to hear the opinion of an actual economist give their opinion on our money system to get an alternate point of view before making any conclusions of my own. It's hard to sort out the FUD from the propaganda and would be nice to hear both sides of the issue.

This is possible with open-bolt machine guns. The firing pin is part of the bolt itself. The bolt wants to travel forward to fire the round, because it is being pushed by spring pressure. The only thing holding the bolt back in place is a small catch tab (which is released by pulling the trigger). If the tiny spring which holds the catch tab is weak or damaged, the recoil force of the bolt against the bolt spring can overcome the catch by itself, and the gun will go full-auto with no user intervention.
