    Agreed. The shadows (which aren't cut off by surfaces--notice how the magnet casts a shadow through the opaque steel box? Take a close look if you can) are hardly as good as Doom3's.

    A game with HL2's detail, reflections, and normals, and Doom3's shadowing, will make me want to go to a store, buy it, and give the vendor a 50% tip (I got HL2 with the ATI offer with a card I bought, and via Steam).

    But seriously, I can imagine all the stuff this can be used for. Like checking dangerous sewers and radioactive dumps or something. I like it, I like it a lot. (Though not for butt-plugging obviously.)

    *esp. when they're put in thinner cases and not those 1/2cm monstrocities.

    You and the parent are both right, believe it or not. Windows icons can either be in the completely different format described above, or made from a plain old BMP with (as parent stated) the first pixel being the desired transparency key. Confusing, but true. The GIMP makes the ICOs you refer to, while both Paint and GIMP can make the simpler "keyed" one as a BMP (you rename it after).

    (plays old Mario song in agreement) I don't really like 3D games as much either*. There are many more secrets in many 2D games**. Maybe it's because I get ADD and don't like a simple linear storyline. Or because it's harder to add regions to a 3D world that'd effectively hide said secrets. Or something.

    Obviously, teh 3D looks better though.

    *besides the Final Fantasies and Starfoxes of the gaming world. And perhaps Half-Life 2. But not Counter-Strike as much.

    **there's a lot in both FF7 and 10, from what I remember.

    ...but nowadays given enough polygons, clear textures, and good processing power we already can run an almost full virtual reality with all the tricks up a graphics card's sleeves (or registers). Like higher order surfaces, vertex programs, and such stuff...it blows one's mind IMO.

    I think, speed aside, we won't see much improvement anymore, now or in the future (except, perhaps, for true 3D displays--in space, like the DNA strand in the Athens 2004 opening ceremony, as opposed to flattened like a TV/monitor).
