  1. Cell Phone Sales on PDA Sales Fall for Third Year in Row · · Score: 2, Informative

Cell phone sales have risen 35%, and Nokia leads with 46 million cellphones sold in the 2nd quarter alone. That means Nokia sells approximately 185million cell phones a year, and thats only one company. Just mind boggling.

  3. Problems with Government on Struggling With Major IT Projects · · Score: 1

The main problem with government run IT programs is the same problem with ALL government programs.

Oversight and other things are the only tip of the iceberg.

The problem is they are being created BY the government. A Government may be penalized by voters for screwing up, but the likelihood of that transcending partisan politics is miniscule. A Corporation is screwed if they mess up, they will lose money, etc. All a Government has to do is request more money.

Look at projects such as the Big Dig (in Boston), they've run 5 years over, and nearly 14 billion over budget.

How does this apply to IT? As I mentioned, the mentality is the same.

I'm kinda surprised nobody's mentioned the FBI IT fiasco yet. The FBI had a plan to overhaul their computers/network, and its millions of dollars over budget, and doesn't even work.
To finish my argument, I quote the Department of Justice's Inspector General, who blasted the FBI IT project.

"IG investigators concluded that the bureau lacked basic project management practices and had failed to establish policies that would prevent overruns and delays in IT procurements."

  4. Broadband= MS Profit on Microsoft Posts Record Earnings · · Score: 2, Insightful

Microsoft is majorly profiting because I'd say because of the explosion of broadband. With more people accessing the internet (running XP, no doubt) the servers increase. That's a profit.
As more and more people get online, more servers will be required, and with anti-Linux propaganda at the ready, Microsoft can take advantage of small business sans IT.
    (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem /fact s/default.mspx)
That being said, I'm sure Linux groups (Red Hat, etc.) have sold more servers also.

As previously mentioned, more and more computers are being sold. The vast majority are dell-whorish mass-produced Windows XP computers.
Case in point, I'm at my school library using brand new IBMs running Windows XP. As long as schools, libraries, individual users, etc, continue to buy desktops, Microsofts profits will continue to rise.

On a side note, the computer next to me just crashed.

  17. Bad Idea on Philadelphia Considers Free Citywide Wireless Access · · Score: 1

Personally I think this is a bad idea...it's socialism. And it's unnecessary. I'd say 50% of the people who used Wifi in Philly would probably be out-of-towners, or at even out-of-staters, considering how close to other states Philly is. Let government do what it needs to, and do it well, and no more. Rather than increase taxes to pay for a massive wifi network, (all the hotspots, etc.) let the taxes be used by citizens to buy their own, the way they want. Besides. This would eliminate chalking!!
