I stopped patching my xp box 2 years ago. The average user of course probably wouldn't be able to do that, but it works fine for most computer geeks.
Back when I first stopped, I would have patched if I felt it was necessary. Now, I wouldn't patch unless you held a gun to my head.

To be honest, I am stuck in a position that as my computer software ages, I am unsure how to upgrade. I will be VERY unlikely to switch to Vista or any future MS offering. Switching to some Linux distro will be a pain because my main computer has been windows for so long, and I enjoy playing games and using various software that is generally not supported on Linux. Mac might be a possibility, but it will still be a pain in the ass.
Oh well, I'll consider the options when the time comes.

Hang on, it was the *sister* who was being the ass. My point was simply that if she is being an ass, maybe helping her isn't the best course of action. You can pretend all day long that family is infallible, but in the real world they are people just like everyone else, and can fuck you over and treat you like garbage just like everyone else. *And*... she can answer your "remember all those times *I* bailed *you* out?" question with a "No" whether or not you did!

Not to say that I don't think it's important to have very close friends/family, but the fact is that you don't choose your blood family and they very well might stab you in the back. You can send your 'condolences' all day long and put on a fake smiley face and say that everything is just peachy, but, friend, your haughty attitude doesn't change reality.

As technology makes some jobs obselete, it opens up the door for many other jobs. The problem seems to me to be that people can't adjust to change very well. There is absolutely no reason why all 6B people can't be doing constructive things and getting paid a reasonable amount for their efforts, it's really a matter of figuring out how to organize such a change. Available resources is a consideration, but it is obviously possible for the earth to support 6B people. As technology increases it becomes ever easier to support that number.

I really don't see any major reason why everyone couldn't be connected to the internet, if that route is pursued. Of course, it may not occur, only time will tell.

My system runs WAY better with the page file off, it's ridiculous. I used to have slow downs all the time as the HD was accessed, and that has been largely eliminated. I would recommend anyone with plenty of RAM give it a try and see how it goes.

It setup almost everything perfectly, and took me about 15 minutes to do. Basically the only things I had to do was run an included script to get encoded DVD to work properly (legal issue), and plunk in the right X config script.

I was seriously blown away how easy it all was.
