What about the healthcare fiasco Mr. President? What about all these children that are being kidnapped and nurdered by sex offenders Mr. President? What about the crappy education system in which our children score well below the rest of the world in nearly every category Mr. President? Maybe I expect too much for our elected officials...like concentrating on things that will make life better for Americans, and for the rest of the world.

Because my friends / family / clients deverve the best. Fact...Firefox is faster, more secure, more configurable and more user-friendly than Internet Exploder. Fact...Thunderbird is a clean, non-intrusive application that exceeds Outlook in nearly every category, with the exception of the lack of a calendar. When my wife was running outlook on her machine it took nearly 45 seconds to start up. Once I switched her to Thunderbird that time went to 7 seconds...no kidding. It also comes down to cost. The Redmond Mafia wants to charge you top-dollar for products that require more patches and hot-fixes than any other product on the market. The technical support you get while good, can take FOREVER to actually get. The fact is that once I have moved people over to Open Source applications I have NEVER had one person switch back to what they were using before. Don't take my word for it...listen to those who have made the switch.

It really comes down to font issues really. StarOffice corrects 99% of this. I get resumes all the time at work that are done in OpenOffice (and look good in OpenOffice) but when you read them in word, the formatting is all off. This may have changes in OO 2, but as I said, StarOffice takes care of most of this. Also, Power Point has major issues with anything created in Open Office. I have to use Power Point to create the presentation and then show it in Open Office. At least I know when I create it in PPT it will be viewable on either product. Not the same if created in OO.

The biggest problem with people adopting open source in my mind is that they are afraid to try something new. Introduce them to something new in the beginning and they will use it. Chances are they will stick with it. If they move to Word later, at least they gave it a chance.

I'm not a CA basher, but the fact here is that those things that can, in Mr. Greenblatt's opinion, make Linux unstable can be removed, or simply not added in the first place. I know a few people that install everything, which I consider to be a poor practice. I install what I need and nothing more, and I have had no problems with my 2.6 kernel systems. They are stable on the server and the desktop. Perhaps a FULL install could make an Enterprise server unstable, but I don't see it. I'm not a Windows person, but I am told the Windows kernel is MUCH bigger than the Linux kernel, and companies have been accepting the crashes and blue screens for a long time...yet Windows didn't change, and people didn't line up to dump Microsoft stuff in the streets.

Are you sure this isn't an April Fools Joke? I suppose it is very necessary as VMware has the market cornered, and without supporting Linux and other OS's Microsoft can't hope to touch the market share that VMware enjoys. I think the key here though is that Microsoft is saying, whether or not they want to admit it, that Linux is for real, and that they MUST support it in some manner if they hope to continue the strong position they hold now. Not to support it shows how ignorant they really are when it comes to what their customers want, so I take this as a positive sign.

This is correct. I travel OFTEN (unfortunately) and had an interesting discussion with a guy from the FAA who was telling me that even though you get out of range fairly quickly in the air, the spped of the aircraft causes the phone to try sending and receiving signals over a VERY wide area, and that can disrupt signals. This is why they tell you to wait until you're over 10,000 feet before you can activate any electronic devices, because you are now not able to access any signal from a cell tower, and thus teh chance of causing problems drops quite a bit when that happens.
