Exactly...very well said. If only it were a different way, but you know your [insert computer-illiterate family member] isn't going to be running this.

I agree with you in your anger towards p2p services, as they are an IT dept's worst nightmare. However, you had to have realized that you were walking into a snakepit saying something like that on Slashdot. It is like insulting open-source software...you just don't do it. :)

Anyways, I admire your apology, and your submission/question was VERY important. I, too, learned some useful info, and such. I use p2p software at home, but I download CDs on a trial basis. If I like it, I buy it. I can easily say that I have bought 3x as many CDs as I would have otherwise and have gone to countless concerts based off my use of p2p programs. Therefore, I do not see them as Evil (TM) or anything, but rather an invaluable tool for aspiring artists. Thanks for your submission as well as your reply to my post - very well done.

It will be interesing to see how Sony re-adjusts their pricing plan now that the DS low-balled them at $149. That makes it a necessity for Sony to be less than $250 to competitive...maybe even $200 I'd say.

What about in denser traffic, like Chicago. I have driven with my cruise on, and at the last second, decide to sweep over to the next lane. Guess that's not the intended purpose, but I have driven behind too many old ladies riding the brake in the left lane. :) If you are right, then hey, sign me up. Thanks for the input!

  15. Re:Human Control on Vehicles of Tomorrow? · · Score: 1
We need to build these flying or driving cars to be so smart that in the event of an emergency, they have built-in, completely separate, autonomous controls to shut or bring the vehicle to a *safe* stop. Barring a completely unforeseen disaster, the vehicles would almost maintain themselves, their electronics and controls as well as their operation.

Good idea, in theory, but when you get to ~100k miles, then electrical systems will get less and less reliable [f(MTBF)] while mechanical systems are a little more predictable in how they deal with wear (ie worn brake pads = better chance of not stopping, while an IC can crap out at anytime). Personally, I would rather still be the driver, with electrical systems to back me up in case I screw up. THAT, I think, is what we need to go for right now, at least until we can make better equipment.

I have a FX35, which is a great gadget car, and I already have the "Adaptive Cruise Control" mentioned.

I think this is a cool feature in terms of gadgetry, but I would rather my car not respond according to the way some yahoo in front of me is driving. I tend to change lanes if someone in front of me is slowing down, rather than slow down with them.

So to answer your question, what will cars of the future look like, I would say the Infiniti FX35 is a good start...

If you are referring to the looks of the FX, then I will agree that it has a sleek, futuristic look, but I still feel that it has too much "station wagon" in it. I personally, would rather have an SUV or a car, as opposed to a hybrid style.

  18. Post exaggerates on The Space Elevator - Public or Private? · · Score: 2, Interesting
The post makes this sound like it is a done deal that this will be done commercially. However, the FA says the following:

While a project as risky and expensive as a space elevator would seem to be solely in the realm of government, private investors could play a role. Already one company, LiftPort, is trying to commercially develop a space elevator.

    *TRYING*

For a commercial startup to get the mass amounts of funding needed for a venture like this seems VERY unlikely to me. With the current cynicism surrounding space exploration as well as the exorbitant costs associated here, I just don't see it happening. But maybe I'm just a pessimist.
