"VMware is not open-source, and is pretty expensive if you need more than the basics. However it's well-supported in most circles, and its paid-license-support gets it past the PHB hurdle."

KVM is to VMware what Sendmail is to Exchange, not a drop in replacement in 99% of what people are expecting out a VM product.

Xen is tainted by its association with Citrix to me, but I wish there would be more support for Virtualbox (also tainted by corporate association, of course) since that is the most n00b friendly virtualization software and should be used in place of VMWare Player/Workstation/Fusion in most instances IMHO.

  4. Try Earthlink/Covad on East Coast Broadband Fastest In USA · · Score: 2, Interesting

From New York City, inside the "speed zone"

I was paying $50 for 3Mb DSL, which only negotiated at 1.7Mb on my router. The only other mainstream alternative was TimeWarner, who doesn't sell naked cable (i.e. you need their "extended basic" service for $45 before you can get Internet service), so I thought I was screwed.

However I was able to get Earthlink 8Mb for $75 with unlimited long distance and various other stuff.

I was worried the low speed negotiation that hampered Verizon would continue when I switched to Earthlink, but I get 750Kb downloads consistently, so that wasn't the case.

I have Earthlink's DNS crap and the slight double click on the phone when I first pick up, but other than that, the service has been stellar.

The difference for me was the response on some sites like Youtube and the ability to stream radio stations without interruption.

Let's face it broadband in the US is going to be intermittently crappy for our lifetime. It's in the hands of companies who don't give a hoot about anything but their own short term goals.

Any solution wherever you are will only temporarily solve the problem.

  14. Conversely as a KDE fan... on Is Commercialization Killing Open Source? · · Score: 1

It's pretty clear that the way Gnome is funded is part of it's problem. It's exactly do the fact of how Gnome is funded that:

    a) it doesn't actively compete with KDE because it's got the inside track, so it doesn't have to try as hard, because there's no active evaluation of it's worth opposite KDE by most of the big distributions.

    b) it stagnates in some areas where the corporate backers' ideas conflict with each other, like moving beyond C.

    c) there are a fair number of people on the project who are clearly not interested in it as they once were and work on it part time while indulging in all sorts of unrelated side projects.

I actually think Gnome would greatly benefit from a shake up in it's funding, for the benefit of all. IMHO the leadership is too conflicted and complacent to make a desktop that can truly challenge the commercial offerings.

Well, if it's on a case by case basis, then Gnome did indeed win the desktop war... For you, but it lost with me. I'm not saying that Gnome doesn't have it's pluses or have it's fans, but in terms of saying anything in Linux has won the desktop war, there's no denying that Linux isn't making much progress in this area.

The root of what this story is about is SLED 10, which obviously didn't go anywhere in terms of desktop market share despite a massive investment from one of the premier Linux vendors, thus necessitating monies from Bill.

The fact that Havoc Pennington, Nat Friedman, Jeff Waugh and various other muck-a-mucks at commercial vendors choose Gnome over KDE doesn't amount to a hill of beans as long as there's no real progress on the desktop front, and KDE development continues. Declaring Gnome the winner because people still shovel money into it, is simply not accurate at this point.

  19. Re:GNOME is funded by *everybody* on Mark Shuttleworth Tries To Lure OpenSUSE Devs · · Score: 3, Insightful

Ugh where are my mod points?

Gnome will be winning the desktop wars when Linux starts winning the desktop wars, and there are no signs that we're even making any progress in this area. As much as Linux is growing, the fact that companies are writing more apps in GTK isn't a sign of Gnome's superiority or even progress in this area as it's still mostly servers and specialty machines.

KDE or Gnome it doesn't matter. They maybe the leper with the most fingers, but they still can't wipe their ass. Whether companies choose to ship Gnome as the default desktop or not it makes no difference, because none of them are succeeding on the merits of being a general purpose desktop OS.
