I also don't know how you deal with switching between applications without a taskbar. It kills me to have to have to try and see which browser that I want to unmimimize by lookin at the tiny freakin thumbnail of it. If the app isn't minimized, then I have to deal with try to click on the tiny little space of each open window and hope I find the right one before I get a headache from the annoyance of it. I would rather have a taskbar, and multiple child panels that I can pull up easily for accessing the systray and applications that I use frequently. I know that Windows uses taskbars, but that doesn't make em evil. Oh well, it is all about whatever works for you. I am just sayin that using a Mac gives me a freakin headache.

As far as I am concerned, linux is more customizable. That is the bottom line for me, whatever you find to be efficient, you can do. Also, I don't get why mac users, atleast the ones that I know, seem to have no desire to customize the look of their desktop. I hate brushed metal with a passion. Hell, most macs I have still have the default wallpaper... I am not saying that my mac-packing friends are sheep, but wtf?

I really wish there was a program like Quicken for monitoring my investments ( downloading changes and printing out pretty little graphs for me ). I still find gnucash lacking (and a little bit ugly).

And besides, if you're going to spend lots on Windows, why don't you just buy a console to play your games on instead?

As far as I am concerned, PC games and Console games are very different. I haven't been into consoles since the Super Nintendo. I prefer PC games. Most of my friends who have resisted the switch were prodded into checking out a livecd, which has usually led to me helping them get a dual-boot going.

It was a bitch to install, there was a huge learning curve, and it took me about 5 distro's and atleast a dozen installs to find the one that was right for me. It took me a couple years to switch over because it wasn't always worth the time to try to get it set up. You people are not helping by ridiculing someone who is relating his experience, which is one that we ALL went through when switching to Linux.

It is not worth everyone's time to go through multiple installs of multiple distrobutions. For example, I convinced a friend of mine to install Linux on a laptop that he uses for web authoring and basic photo editing. After about 8 hours of trying to get his digital camera to be recognized, he looked at me in the eye and said "It's not worth it." Even with my help, and help from an active forum, it was not worth the time and effort to switch. You can throw the "try another distro" argument, at him but he was in no mood and had no time for that as there was work to be done. ( a little gentle prodding and a well-timed update got him up and running a week later )

We all know that things have improved as far as installs go. It is only going to get better, but don't get bent out of shape because somebody has had a bad experience with Linux. You all forget that while others may be interested in Linux, they don't love it like many of us do. For me, installing Linux is a labor of love. For someone who doesn't love Linux, a few failed attempts at a smooth/functioning install is enough to say it is not for them, atleast not for now.

If I buy a script and score for a musical, I can't perform the musical in public without permission of the copyright holder. I can't do as I like with the content of a book without permission of a copyright holder. That's exactly what copyright is designed to enforce.

I have no problem with copyrights, but what I am saying is that EULA should either accesible before the purchase or you should be able to get a full refund. To quote myself "You are paying for the data, the CD should be considered part of packaging." I agree entirely that the object and the content are two different things. I pay for the content, not the cd. The EULA applies to the use of the content. My point is that I should be able to agree with conditions the EULA's X,Y,& Z before purchase or be allowed to return the item.

If I buy a script and score for a musical, I can't perform the musical in public without permission of the copyright holder.

The script/score does not contain a set of rules that you have to agree to after purchasing the score. You know the deal before you buy it, whereas a sealed box of software does not give you that right(oops... almost said luxury..). The two situations are not comparable. If Blizzard wants to impose the EULA from hell, I would probably still buy it and respect the EULA provided I knew what it was prior to purchase. So, to clarify: My problem is not with the terms of the EULA, but the way in which it is presented.

You are free to keep the CD

I don't know if what you are saying is true, but it should not be legal to sell a CD with data on it for $50 and say later, if you don't agree to X, Y, and Z, then you just paid $50 for a CD, and you can't use the data. You are paying for the data, the CD should be considered part of packaging. Also, this doesn't consider cases where you pay to download the software from a company, therefore having no CD. You know damn well that you would not pay $50 for a cd with mystery data on it that may or may not be useful to you.

I think most here agree that it isn't acceptable to add an agreement after the purchase. Legal or not, it is wrong and should be changed to protect consumers. If it remains "legal" to do so, it should be mandatory that all retailers accept returns on products when the consumer does not accept the EULA. The retailer should then be able to exchange the open copies for new ones from the manufacturer. That should be the price companies pay for trying to enforce an agreement made after the purchase, or an agreement made at purchase in which the terms of the agreement were not yet stated.
