before posting these emotional tirades? If you read the article before posting, you will see that a lot of the people being laid off are from marketing. Intel's sales fell significantly, so at the very least marketing didn't do their job and thus are really redundant. So it makes perfect sense to get rid of them, and it wasn't just done to make some fat cats on The Street.

  4. Laptops are tools on Continued Opposition To Laptops in Schools · · Score: 3, Insightful

They are not magic bullets nor will they, by themselves, cause a talented student to blow their potential. However I think that most schools look at them in one of those two lights. Some schools seem to take either of the two extremes and thus do a major disservice to their students.
Giving a kid a computer won't automatically grant them superior research skills or even get them interested in a topic they just aren't interested in. They can aid both of those. Laptops can make looking up a book in the library much easier when compared to a card catalog for instance. They can also allow students to explore materials that are not in their library if they find a topic that particularly sparks their interest.
That being said, computers can be used to goof off easily if the student is so inclined. Motivating the student is the job of the parents, teacher, and especially as time goes on the student themselves. The student who posts to myspace all day long probably isn't the student who 30 years ago would have been staying after school to learn how a slide rule works. They would have been the students that snuck a comic book inside their textbooks. Slacking is not a new phenomena.
But instead of taking responsibility, teachers and parents are blaming laptops or trying to use them to compensate for their own shortcomings. That is like trying to thread a screw with the hammer then when that fails, blaming the hammer manufacturer.

However, he won't be going to "Federal pound me in the ass prison". This seems like a fair sentence. He will have a much harder time getting a good job because of his criminal record, but I guess that is something he should have thought about before unleashing a botnet.... They are going to have to get rid of fraudelent auctions. The last time I bought anything off ebay was a year ago, and the only reason I did that is because it was an uncommon item(English-Chinese electronic dictionary) that is hard to find elsewhere. If I search for anything that isn't eclectic, at least half of the items are fraud, if not more. I have to do a lot of slogging through(usually by sorting by highest price first and then trying to find the items I want) just to get to legit auctions. No, I don't want a "free xbox 360, powerbook and more!!!!!!!!!!" which just turns into a bid for "information that is 110% legit on how to find free items online!". I end up having to do a lot of work just to find the item I want. If you can't be bothered to get rid of fraudelent auctions, then I can't be bothered to bid.

Yes, I am "allowed" to use those terms. Free speech, plus, if you didn't realize, in the United States it is ultimately the CIVILIANS who have control over the military(the commander in chief is a civilian, not a military authority). So if I and my fellow Americans would vote for a president that said soldiers have to wear clown costumes into battle, that is what they would have to wear into battle.
I'm actually disgusted at Bush for saying that the war in Iraq should be totally up to the military(ie for withdrawal etc) and not up to politicians. That is rocking the very foundation of this country. The course of the war should be decided by civilians, if it isn't then we are fighting supposedly "restore democracy" abroad but we have lost it at home.

As long as cold beer, hot food, rock and roll and all the other amenities remain the expected norm, our conduct of the war will gain only impotence. (In the document, but not read aloud - The wholesale and indiscriminate use of firepower will only increase the effectiveness of the enemy and strengthen their resolve to prove the superiority of an agrarian culture against the world's greatest technocracy...The central tragedy of our effort in this conflict has been the confusion of a sophisticated technology with human commitment. Our bombs may in time destroy the geography, but they will never win the war...)...We need fewer men, and better; if they were committed, this war could be won with a fourth of our present force..."

While I have been against the Iraq war from the begining, I wonder how much truth there is to this. Are short stints and relatively comfortable surroundings really not motivating the troops to do their job? A quote from Captain Willard: "Charlie didn't get much USO. He was dug in too deep or moving too fast. His idea of great R and R was cold rice and a little rat meat. He had only two ways home: death or victory."

Just take the above quotes and replace "Vietnam" with "Iraq" and "Charlie" with the insurgency and you have quotes that apply as much to this war as it did 'Nam....
