Well a big part of the problem is that Sharp didn't anticipate the effect that smartphones would have on the portable electronic market.... They made some really cool gadgets but as smartphones continue to encroach on the functionality of these gadgets, many are questioning the wisdom of spending extra money and carrying extra gadgets when their smartphone can do 95+% of what said gadgets can do....
And of course Sharp was really late to the game with Android smartphones, and their offerings(while having really nice screens) are pretty meh imo.
Yup, Sharp built the world's largest in Japan, which started operations in October of 2009, and Sharp is already considering selling it because it sits mostly idle.....
Not to mention lack of naming. I like to be able to divide my workspace into projects/tasks, and not being able to name spaces like you could in earlier versions of OS X* is a huge pain in the ass. Surprisingly I understand (project name) a hell of a lot more than I understand "Desktop 2" And don't even get me started on the stability issues....Terminal, fucking TERMINAL crashes a lot more often after I started using Spaces...
*I'm pretty sure you could, I foolishly never really used spaces back then
Slate did an excellent writeup a few years back on experimenting using non-prescription ADHD meds. One of the most interesting tidbits to come out of that article was that authors Jack Kerouac, James Agee, Graham Greene, and Philip K. Dick all apparently took ADHD drugs "recreationally" to help them write, as did Paul Erdos. Whether it really helped them create all that great work is up for debate, but most of those guys swore by the stuff and they all seemed to pump out some pretty good work....
I know this is/. where saying "pharma evil!" automatically gets you mod points, but do you seriously have any fucking clue what you are talking about, or are you being self-righteous to be self-righteous? Many of the drugs available for ADD are available in generic form(including the Adderall mentioned in TFA) meaning that the amount of money the pharmaceutical industry makes off of it isn't nearly as big as you make it out to be. The drug I take costs less than $1/day, company that makes it probably only makes 10 cents on it, probably even less. So your big conspiracy is that someone is plotting to steal $30 a year from me?
Sorry, I forgot, this is/., "EVERYONE IS EVIL BUT ME, I AM THE ONLY ONE THAT MAKES MONEY IN A MORAL FASHION, BOW BEFORE MY SUPERIORITY!"
Hopefully theft won't become widespread, both because it will have a negative impact on public transport systems AND it will have a huge negative impact on anonymity. I just checked out Victoria's MyKi system(which was not the one they cracked, but I imagine the one they cracked offers similar services) and they still have an option to buy anonymously.
However if theft becomes a huge problem I can quickly see that option going away in the name of deterring theft(note that I am not defending the practice, simply stating what will probably happen). After all you are much less likely to try to score a free ride if your name is attached to the ticket. I quite like being able to travel conveniently without being tracked(*puts tinfoil hat in murse*)
Ask yourself this: why is the stock exchange ONLY in new york? Given the global nature of stock trading, wouldn't a more decentralized ntwork, with trade centers clustered around other population centers make more logistical sense?
You know, like how Akamai manages to handle so much data, by having servers fucking everywhere.
AND.....you're a fucking idiot. Do you know the first thing about distributed systems, or do you just enjoy mouthing off and feeling self-righteous? There are large issues in spreading systems out like that, that might not matter when you are distributing cat videos, but do matter when you are dealing with information that is highly volatile, latency matters, and even more than that, consistency matters. There isn't some magic genie that updates all of Akamai's server the microsecond something changes. There are latencies and it takes a while for servers to get in sync meaning 2 different people may not be acting on the same data. You can tighten the consistency requirements, but then your latency and performance go to shit.... And those are just the absolute basics of distributed systems. But yeah LIBERULS STEALLING MY STUFFS!
Yeah, but it's Germany, the masters on requiring certificates for everything.... A friend of mine was almost sued for reviewing a hotel in Germany. In his review he stated that there were bedbugs in the hotel he stayed at, and the hotel threatened to sue him. Not because they deny he saw bugs, but because they claimed he didn't have the proper qualifications to determine if the bugs in question were actually bedbugs or not..... They eneded up not going to court, but my friend had to hire a lawyer and they settled out of court, he was forced to remove his review. Only in Germany.....
For a moment there I thought my mom was running a Russian Bride ring and trying to sell me one.... It's probably just malware...at least thats what I tell myself anyway.
Not to mention a lot of countries don't do (nasty deed x overseas) not because they are somehow morally superior to a big country but simply because they were never a major power. It's easier to say, "if I was in power, I would never EVER do X" than to actually not do X if you have power.
The reason editors let you collapse comments is that you sometimes have to make really ugly code -- whether it's for performance or time constraints. And the only way to really describe it actually larger inline blocks that can obfuscate the code. So they make them collapsible for those who have read them already.
Lets not forget (probably misguided) policy. A lot of places have policies that say you MUST have multi-line comments for each class/function/whatever. Being able to collapse those down makes it a lot easier to just bypass such forced comments.
So basically he is doing what people have been doing for eons(sharing how to brew beer), but he has added the secret ingredient, pretentiousness and psuedo-intellectual drivel! Just what I always wanted with my suds.
The strong yen is *somewhat* explainable, but not to the level it is currently at. Japan, although it has a very large debt to GDP ratio(something like 2.2, the highest in the developed world), does have a very high rate of personal savings and thus a lot of people considered it "safe" and sold "riskier" dollars and euro to buy yen, causing it to rise slightly and thanks to algo traders and crazy margin buyers that rise got out of control.... The fundamentals do not support the yen at this level
The yen will snap back, pretty violently, in the other direction, just as the Euro did back in 2008(went from $1.60 to $1.15 in a matter of a few months), at this point its simply a question of time. The euro snapped back when Bear Stearns failed, causing liquidity to dry up and forcing a lot of people to sell their Euro positions to get the cash to cover a lot of their puts, causing the euro to fall, which in turn caused a lot of margin calls which in turn caused more people to sell the Euro etc. The exact same thing will happen with the yen, but I couldn't tell you when. Right now the Fed and ECB are pumping in liquidity like mad, so most of the really heavily leveraged yen traders can absorb any short term swings(such as JCB interventions), but that probably wont last forever. If you want to make lots of money, short the yen, just be careful on the timing:P
Thats why I browse at +6 off-topic, they are usually the best/. has to offer(though unfortunately spammers have been ruining that,/. needs a separate binspam moderation)....and since this post is off-topic I expect it to earn a 5 on my screen.
The buttons are no longer "selected" in that only one can be depressed at a time, they are merely interfaces to an embedded system anymore. They havent been the "press one and all the others pop out" for quite some time, and yet people who have never used an actual "radio button" understand the concept completely.
Do you actually know what a physical radio button is? You can glean from the words that its a button on a radio, but that doesnt give you a whole lot of information. And yet I bet you use the software versions of radio buttons, and call them as such, without batting an eye. Same with the iconic floppy disk, symbols often outlive what they originally represented, just like probably half the words in this post(post? Will the youngins understand that, they have probably never used a physical bulletin board!)
Could it be because it was a horrible, horrible idea to begin with? I can either:
a)Run my own "pod", requiring me to set up hardware and software for that purpose...or
b) connect to another pod, thus defeating the whole purpose of the network....yeah...wonder why it failed.
Also keep in mind that most vaccines have a minimum age in which they can be safely administered, it's not like rhyme doctor sticks a measles vaccine in a baby as soon as the umbellical chord is cut. For measels vaccines should not be given before the first birthday, meaning those that don't vaccinate their children pose a threat to pretty much every baby out there....

I doubt that would happen, historically the Japanese and Koreans haven't exactly been bff....
