I wonder if there would be a lot of interest both from lenders and potential borrowers to create a "green" microcredit program? A quick google search for green microcredit doesn't reveal anything interesting, but basically is there a program that lends people money at a low interest rate to invest in various energy saving technologies around the house? The borrowers could then take the savings and use them to pay back the lenders. It wouldn't be a charity, nor would it be a particularly great investment, but it would, in my opinion, do a lot to help convince people to switch to more energy efficient technologies.

The key isn't to get rid of it entirely, that is just going from one extreme to another. If you have to worry about being productive all the time you are just going to fizzle out more often then not. The key of course is moderation. Sometimes I find slacking off helps when I am at a standstill on a difficult problem. Just getting my mind off of it seems to allow it to wander and usually I will wind up figuring out the critical step while my nose isn't buried in a book.

You can also find more productive ways of slacking off, if that makes any sense. For instance, my guilty vice is South Park, so I loaded up the latest episode today and watched it while I was on an elliptical machine in the gym(with a set of wireless headphones). I was able to watch the episode and workout at the same time.

  14. Wonder if this will cut down on energy use as well on PETA Offers X-Prize for Artificial Meat · · Score: 1

the amount of energy(and CO2 and CH4 emissions) it takes to get a burger to your plate is astounding. Cows are very inefficient if you consider the energy put into them compared to the amount of energy that can be derived from eating them. Not to mention you have to truck the feed to them and then you have to truck the meat to where it is consumed, very few cows in the city. All this adds up to a lot of fuel and a lot of emissions, not to mention the cows themselves often emit methane which is considered to be worse per unit volume then CO2. If they could raise the meat in vitro, maybe the process could be much more efficient and thus emit much less CO2 gasses.

For anyone interested in the subject, the University of Chicago did a pretty good writeup. Seems chicken is probably the best meat for the environment.

they promised, and then rescinded, 64 bit Carbon, and didn't even bother to tell developers until WWDC 2007. This is the big problem with Apple's secrecy, sometimes they are secret just to be secret. There was NO reason not to let developers know there would be no 64 bit carbon as soon as the decision was made, but Apple waited until the last possible second for who knows why.

Yeah, Carbon is dead and they should be going to all Cocoa, but that takes time, and if it was your intention to kill Carbon, why even promise a 64 bit version at all? Why not state from the getgo that you plan to phase out Carbon and that if you want a 64 bit GUI you better be making it in Cocoa? Apple goes out of their way to piss people off sometimes I swear.
