  2. Re:Costs? on Simple Chemical Trick To Boost Battery Efficiency · · Score: 3, Interesting

Well, thats the official rate, which is only as good as the methodology that is used to measure it, which I think is flawed. They measure a "basket" of goods and services plus take surveys on rent. However, this is only meaningful if how you spend your money is representative of the way they measure inflation. For example, in certain catagories of goods we are seeing either 0 inflation or deflation because of the huge influx of goods from China(on things such as plasma tvs) but meanwhile healthcare, energy, housing, education, and even food prices(which are the basics of life) are spiraling out of control. So unless you buy a lot of luxury goods, your personal rate of inflation is probably markedly higher than the one the Fed considers. And in the EU it's even stranger because they try to harmonize prices from different countries meanwhile the inflation picture can be markedly different, esp. on things that aren't tradable across borders such as housing. In addition you have countries like Germany that raised its sales tax 3% this year, and that pretty much automatically creates inflation....

    Just my 2 cents.

Actually, IIRC there is a tax break for taking public transport too. At least my old employer had something you could fill out to get one(you had to present your receipts etc). I ride a bike and legally don't pay taxes(long story, but I am earning 65k/yr) so I never really worried about it, but its there if you look for it.

If that were true there would be no hardcore Yankees fans because well, they win almost all the time(by virtue of having the most money, which shows that fans are giving them said money to spend, but I digress), and yet there are a ton of hardcore Yankees fans.

Being an underdog might inspire some people to become devoted to something, but the big dogs have doting fans as well. Just not Microsoft.

Heh, funny you should mention Sony, I think Apple is going down the exact same route Sony went down, probably for worse than for better. Anyone remember when Sony was a kickass manufacturer of electronics? They used to be, but then they decided to expand by going into tons of unrelated market such as creating an entertainment branch. However, this was a bad idea because it forced Sony to make compromises among the competing divisions that resulted in nobody being happy, especially the consumer. Sony has a hit every now and then(I love my ereader, too bad the interface sucks and the store is baren) but Sony is, in my opinion, past its prime because they became so huge. Apple is becoming the new Sony, and I think its going to bite them in the ass in the same way.

Look at their computer line, we haven't seen a "real" upgrade to any of their lines in almost 6 months(I realize they released an 8 core mac pro, but they left the rest of the machine the same). Now they are selling obsolete technology at high prices. I used to tr to defend them, but it is getting harder and harder to do so. I am a mac user(owner of a powerbook) but I am thinking of buying a desktop soon and more and more it looks like it's going to run Ubuntu and not OS X. If Apple wants to become a purveyor of overpriced cell phones, fine, but don't expect me to want to buy an OS from such a vendor.
